NBA News

In more NBA Draft News the first player of the 2003 Rookie Class has been signed. T.J Ford a PG out of Texas University selected with the 8th pick overall in the 2003 draft has signed a contract with the Milwaukee Bucks. It has been reported that he has signed a 4yr contract. The amount of money has not been disclosed due to team rules. Later High School Phenom Lebron James finalized his contract with Cleveland for reportedly a 4yr contract worth 12.9 million.

In other NBA news the bulls PG Jay Williams, who was the teams 1st round pick (2nd overall) in the 2002 NBA draft, has been released from the hospital. Williams was hospitalized after a life threatening Motorcycle accident. After successful pelvis surgery and upon substantial improvements in Jay Williams' condition, the trauma doctors at Illinois Masonic Hospital decided to discharge Mr. Williams on Wednesday, July 2. At that time, he was flown to Durham, N.C. to participate in the next phase of his recovery at Duke University Medical Center. This will include necessary knee ligament surgery and rehabilitation.

When the Timberwolves traded for Sam Cassell last week, somebody asked coach Flip Saunders if Troy Hudson would remain his starting point guard. Those things evolve, Saunders said.

Cassell arrived in Minneapolis on Wednesday, passed his physical exam and declared himself not a big believer in the theory of evolution.

"I don't think they want me here to bring me off the bench," Cassell said. "We'll see what happens. Do I think I can start for them? Troy had a magnificent season, no disrespect to Troy. The things he's done on the basketball court are big. I'm not here to start controversy . . .

"Hopefully, I'm going to get them over the hump. I've been there before. I'm anxious to get there again."

Cassell won NBA championship rings with the Houston Rockets in his first two professional seasons. That was eight years ago. Cassell was a reserve guard then on a team that featured Hakeem Olajuwon.

New Timberwolves guard Sam Cassell: "I'm here to get K.G. some easy looks."

"I got to the Eastern Conference finals once since then," said Cassell, referring to seasons spent with Phoenix, Dallas, New Jersey and a Milwaukee team that came within a victory of reaching the 2001 NBA Finals. "The urge is still there for me to play at 9 o'clock Eastern time [the traditional starting time for NBA Finals games]. It's an opportunity for me, and it's an opportunity for the organization to step up and show K.G. they're going to put a team around him that, when he wakes up in the morning, he's going to feel good about going to war with."

Asked if the Timberwolves are capable of achieving what those Houston teams did nearly a decade ago, Cassell said, "We're close right now. With the addition of myself and if they do some things . . ."

Cassell thought he was approaching again that prime-time stage when the Bucks took Philadelphia to seven games before losing in the 2001 Eastern Conference finals. He was part of the Bucks' "Big Three" -- along with Glenn Robinson and Ray Allen -- that seemed poised to make the next step in coming seasons. Just two years later, all three are gone from Milwaukee.

"I wasn't surprised to be traded; I was surprised to come to Minnesota," said Cassell, who was dealt on Friday with Ervin Johnson for Joe Smith and Anthony Peeler. "They traded Glenn Robinson from under my nose. They traded Ray Allen, under my nose. I was the next one. No hard feelings. I couldn't do no more there."

Saunders said he expects to play Cassell, 33, an 11-year NBA veteran, and Hudson together at times, much as Cassell and Gary Payton played together when the Bucks acquired Payton from Seattle in February. Both Cassell and Hudson are considered "scoring" point guards.

"He's the coach," Cassell said. "We talked. It's cool. He expects me to help them win more games, and I expect him to let me play my game."

The Wolves nearly acquired Cassell in a 1999 three-way trade that sent Stephon Marbury to New Jersey, Cassell to Milwaukee and Terrell Brandon to Minnesota. "I knew I was coming here," Cassell said. "My agent told me it was Stephon and me, straight up. But Milwaukee jumped in."

This time, the Wolves got Cassell as an offensive element to help lighten Garnett's load. Cassell has never been afraid to take the big shot. Sometimes he has been accused of being too eager to shoot.

"Some nights he shoots it more than people think he should," said Johnson, his teammate in Milwaukee for four seasons. "He wants the ball when it matters and, good or bad, he'll take responsibility for it. Sam has two [championship] rings. He can put the ball in the hole."

Cassell said it will be his job to get Garnett, Wally Szczerbiak and "Troy, too" easy shots at the basket by making the opponents' defense respect his offense.

"I'm going to be me," he said. "I'm here to get K.G. some easy looks because Kevin hasn't had a lot of easy looks in so many years . . . K.G. and I, we respect each other. We're not two guys who are going to hang around Minnesota together. I love to win, he loves to win. He plays with his emotion. I play with my emotion.

"I'm fitting in here, just like I fit in Houston, just like I fit in Milwaukee."

• The Wolves have added former Gophers guard Kevin Burleson to their three-day mini-camp at Target Center this weekend.
