Nativity In Black II: A Tribute to Black Sabbath- (Various Artists)- *** out of ***** possible
What to say about this album? How do you begin to cover the greatest heavy metal band of all time? Well, 12 groups try on this album, with varying degrees of success. The album opens with a Godsmack-ed "Sweet Leaf." I'm not a big fan of this song in the first place, and I think Sully Erna is not very well suited to singing Ozzy. Just an opinion. Machine Head, Static-X, and Megadeth all produce mildly interesting, but fairly average fare. The first standout track is System of a Down's cover of "Snowblind." This cover is different enough to be fresh and yet still true enough to the original to be recognizable. It is great. Track 6, featuring Pantera is again somewhat average. Apparently 7 is a lucky number, because Primus featuring Ozzy do a version of "N.I.B." which is very similar to the original, but even tops the original mainly because of Les Claypool's insane bass. Slayer's "Hand of Doom" is also fairly good. Soulfly does reasonably well, as does upstart band Hed(PE). Monster Magnet is also listenable, except for the overly drawn-out stoner intro. The final track is the most frightening of them all. I refer, of course, to Busta Rhymes's take on "Iron Man." It is basically a rap tune disguised as "Iron Man," featuring new lyrics, a new Ozzy-sung chorus, and even the subtitle "This Means War." While unique, it is not necessarily all that good. As rap goes, it is slightly better than average. So, this is an intriguing, and, for the most part, good album for metal fans. |
