Good, Matthew Band- BEAUTIFUL MIDNIGHT **** out of ***** possible
I appreciate this album. Matthew Good and his band manage to come up with some pretty amazing stuff. It's powerpunk plus, if you will. Sure, the elements of cheap Blink-182 styled melodic selloutism are there, but they are pushed to the background, leaving some experimentation and interesting song material to shine through. I knew I wasn't buying a pop album when I came across the first track, "Giant," with its amusing cheerleader introduction. Next up is the reason I bought the album, the single "Hello Time Bomb," which is impressive and semi-disturbing. "Strange Days" sort of recalls Radiohead's "Fake Plastic Trees," in that they're both pretty, acoustic songs that you wouldn't want to hear too much. "Deep 6ix" is pretty typical post-grunge stuff, and "Load Me Up" doesn't do too much for me. However, the album's peak, in my opinion, occurs at "Failing the Rorschach Test." The song combines abstract subject material (Alice in Wonderland metaphors) with an odd combination of psychedelic, punk, grunge, and melody to form something coherently beautiful. Other highlights include "A Boy and His Machine Gun," "The Future is X-Rated," and "Born to Kill" (the first and last of which have irritatingly censored titles on the back of the case). I wouldn't credit this album with doing anything revolutionary, but it sure is damn enjoyable.
Guster- LOST AND GONE FOREVER **** out of ***** possible
I must say i truly enjoyed this cd. Guster's stripped down jangly acoustic guitar, raucous electric guitar, basic bass and hand played drums create a delightful pop atmosphere. There are no weird processors here, just the basics. The British Invasion sounds of "Fa Fa" could prove to be a big hit, but the album's number one single oppurtunity, in my opinion at least, is "Barrel of a Gun." For a song with the same subject matter as an LFO song (the incredibly horrible "Girl on TV"), this is one hell of a tune. Also check out "Rainy Day" "Either Way" and "I Spy." All and all a good buy in my opinion. |
