...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - SOURCE TAGS AND CODES *** 1/2 out of ***** possible
This band is very strange. I can't quite put my finger on their sound. It's almost punk at times, it's almost jazz at times, it's almost.... something else. Trail of Dead has been a very popular band on the indie circuit for many years and this is their major label debut on Interscope. The album opens with what may be its most straightforward song, "It Was There that I Saw You." This song is nothing more than a heavy, punkish pondering with an absolutely gorgeous guitar interlude. The second track, the leadoff single, dubiously titled "Another Morning Stoner," is very ambient, for the most part. It paints romanticized images of dreams and longings, leading to a climactic ending centered around the lines "What is forgiveness?/It's just a dream/What is forgiveness?/It's everything." Another highlight is the emo-tinged "How Near How Far." This is followed by a piano-led "Heart in the Hand of the Matter," a very interesting and pleasant, yet somehow anachronous interlude. Other highlights include the ambient segue, "Relative Ways" into the gut-wrenching "After the Laughter" and the album's grand finale, the title track. All in all, I'd call it a good buy if you want to hear some interesting and unique music.
At the Drive-in - RELATIONSHIP OF COMMAND **** out of ***** possible
Rawkin punk band. I can honestly say this is the coolest punk in a long time, as far as my taste goes. My understanding of this band wass that it consists of a bunch of whackjobs from Texas making really aggressive emo punk. Thats a pretty good summary, I think. I have a few favorite tracks but there are, by no means, any subpar ones. Despite a poor first impression, the single "One Armed Scissor" really grew on me. Its furious chorus is a fresh sound, one I haven't heard in a while. And the bridge, welllll the bridge ("dissect a trillion sighs away..." for those of you who can't figure out where i mean) has the coolest drums ever. Another fave of mine is the oddly structured "Rolodex Propaganda." While the introduction is incredibly dissonant, the song develops some melody as the synthesizer chimes in. The proceeding track, my personal favorite, is the slower "Quarantined." The way the thunderstorm interplays with the song is particularly interesting. The final track I will speak of is the hyperspeed "Cosmonaut." That song is just cool, nuff said. So, I recommend that anyone who digs emo-punk buys this. Cuz its cool.
Audioslave - AUDIOSLAVE **** out of ***** possible
Well, its not the return of Rage Against the Machine. In some aspects, I suppose this is a good thing, since the stylings of Rage, while truly awesome, were rather limited generically. No such problems here. Songs range from Rage-with-sung-notes rockers like "Show Me How to Live," and the single, "Cochise" to the power ballad-esque "I Am the Highway" and the R&B-influenced "Getaway Car." The downside is, that unlike most Rage albums, some tracks here seem like filler. Despite this fact, all of the aforementioned songs are truly well-written and mark some new instrumental territory for Morello, Wilk, and Commerford. Morello even manages, (on a few songs, at least), to take a solo that sounds like (gasp) a guitar! I never thought I'd see the day. Still, this album comes highly recommended to anyone who likes rock. Anyone. |
