Road Construction Safety Tips
|
| Follow these driving tips for road-construction season |

| Original version of letter to the editor subsequently featured in The Plain Dealer on Sunday, July 10, 2005 |
Regarding driving through construction zones, I would like to offer some advice for drivers:
1. Go slow and get off the phone, put down the map/paper/meal and DRIVE the car.
2. Have your headlights or parking lights on, especially in rain, fog, dusk or dusty conditions.
3. Do not follow trucks or construction machines closer than about 50 feet. Do not quickly pass stopped trucks or machines assuming they arent in the flow of traffic.
4. Try to avoid the work area in the first place. If you live in the area plan your day so as to minimize the number of trips you need to make. If the area has been under construction for a while you should allow extra time for travel through it. Again, avoid it if possible.
5. Use turn signals, the flagman cant read your mind.
6. Do what the flagman or officer tells you to do. He wants you through quickly just like you do, but his priorities are safety first, getting the job done second, and traffic flow third. It has to be that way! If traffic was the priority, there couldnt be construction. Blowing the horn or otherwise childish behavior will NOT get things moving faster.
Be extra careful and alert during the construction season now underway and arrive alive.
