The Kingdom of Italy reached its height and empire status when Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Italian Somaliland were united to form Italian East Africa with King Victor Emmanuel III as Emperor of Ethiopia from 1936-1941. From 1939-1943, he was also King of Albania. World War II brought about the end of the kingdom of Italy created in 1861. The British defeated the Italian navy at Matapan (1941) and then the Americans, British, and Free French defeated Italy and Germany at Tunisia (1943), before Americans landed at Salerno (1943) and began the allied conquest of Italy. |
