Compiled by Gene M. Romero

1. Neem Tree originates from India and traces its existence way back to the Upavanavinod, an ancient Sanskrit treatise dealing with agriculture. This treatise cites the Neem tree as a "cure for ailing soil, plants and livestock. The tree has been referred to as the "curer of all ailments" and the "blessed tree" by both Hindu and Muslim population in India

2. Neem tree is traditionally known as "village pharmacy" for its versatile traits. Every part of the tree has helpful use:

Neem fruits, seed oil, leaves, bark and roots have varied uses such as general antiseptics, antimicrobials, treatment of urinary disorders, diarrhoea, fever bronchitis, skin infections, septic sores infected burns, hypertension, and inflammatory diseases.

Neem leaf extracts and teas are reputed to treat malaria, the anti-malarial action is attributed to gedunin, a limonoid. Neem tablets, containing a neem leaf decoction, recommended and are available in India for cases of diabetes mellitus of adults, nonketonic diabetes, and for cases of insulin fast or insulin sensitivity.

Neem oil is used in soap-making such as bathing and laundry soaps. Neem oil also is used in the manufacture of dog soaps and shampoo that control, ticks, fleas, and lice. It is used in herbal hair oil, hair tonic, and nail oil. Toiletries are manufactured based on neem oil and extracts.

Neem twigs are used daily by millions in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan as disposable anti-septic toothbrushes. Neem toothpastes and powders are reputed as effective dentrifice products.

Extracts of neem bark are used in some toothpastes and mouth washes singly or in combination with other herbal extracts. The inhibiting effect of aqueous neem extract upon bacterial properties influencing plaque formation has recently been confirmed.

The bark is used for cosmetics, health care products and medicinal preparations.

The leaves are medicinal. Its seed oil which is used chiefly in pest controlling preparations and also in medicinal, cosmetic and health care products.

The seed remains or neem cake is an excellent organic fertilizer.

3. Neem tree can survive up to 200 years. Neem wood is hard and relatively heavy. The wood seasons well, except for end splitting. Being durable and termite resistant, neem wood is used in making fence posts, poles for house construction, furniture etc.

4. Full grown neem trees yield between 10 to 100 tons of dried biomass/ha, depending on rainfall, site characteristics, spacing, ecotype or genotype. Leaves comprise about 50% of the biomass; fruits and wood constitute one-quarter each. Improved management of neem stands can yield harvests of about 12.5 cubic meter (40 tons) of high quality solid wood/ha.

5. Neem has become important in the global context today because it offers answers to the major concerns facing mankind such as pollution. Environmentally, Neem has a reputation as a natural air purifier, exhaling out oxygen and keeping the oxygen level in the atmosphere balanced. Neem's ability to withstand extreme heat and water pollution is well known.

6. The United Nations declared the Neem Tree in the 1990s as the "Tree of the 21st Century."

7. Scientific research has shown that Neem extracts can influence nearly 400 species of insects.

8. The active constituent of Neem is made up of about 40 different active compounds called Tetranortriperpernoids, or more specifically, liminoids. Chemically, these active ingredients or liminoids, are more akin to steroids. When ingested by the insect, they create hormonal disruptions which prevent the insect from feeding, breeding or metamorphosing.

9. Unlike chemical insecticides, Neem extracts do not lead to insects' development of chemical resistance in future generations.

10. Insects treated with neem during the larval and pupal stages, comprising 60-70 percent of their lives, generally die within 3-14 days. The Philippine version (Bioneem natural insecticide) can effectively render death to insects in few minutes.

11. Experiments have shown that neem is also effective against fruit flies. Med fly, one of the most damaging horticulture pests, can be controlled by spraying Neem solution under fruit trees. Neem has an advantage over the currently used pesticides. Whereas conventional pesticides kill fruit flies as well as thrips, internal parasites, Neem products on the other hand leave the biological-control organisms unaffected; they only kill fruit flies. This reduces, in fact, eliminates adverse, unintended effects.

12. Neem is used in controlling pests of stored products. Farmers usually mix Neem leaves with grain before keeping it in storage for several months. Neem leaves, oil or extracts act as repellent against several insects such as weevils, flour beetles, bean-seed beetles and potato moths.

13. Many species of birds and fruit-eating bats subsist on the sweet flesh of ripe fruits, while certain rodents selectively feed on the kernel, confirming neem's safety to warm-blooded animals.

14. Neem leaves are used as mulch in tobacco and tomato fields. They can be very effectively used to kill weeds by spreading them over plant roots to retain moisture.

15. Neem is the only plant from which the natural pesticides (bio-pesticides) are commercially manufactured, found effective, biodegradable, non-toxic thus eco-friendly and acceptable to the farmers and household users.

16. Neem tree acts as natural airconditioner. During hot summer months in northern parts of the Indian subcontinent, the temperature under the neem tree is ~10° C less than the surrounding temperature; 10 air conditioners operated together may not do the job as efficiently and economically as a full grown neem.
