Success is counted sweetest
By those who neer succeed
To comprehend a nectar
Requires the sorest need
Not one of all the purple Host
Who took the Flag today
Can tell the definition
So clear of Victory
As he defeated--dying--
On whose forbidden ear
The distant strains of triumph
Burst agonized and clear!

"Hope" is a thing with feathers--
That perches in the soul--
And sings the tune without the words--
And never stops--at all--
And sweetest--in the Gale--is heard--
And sore must be the storm--
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm--
Ive heard it in the chillest land--
And on the strangest Sea--
Yet never, in Extremity,
It asked a crumb--of Me.

We outgrow love, like other things
And put it in the Drawer--
Till it an Antique fashion shows--
Like Costumes Grandsires wore.

Tell all the Truth but tell it slant--
Success in Circuit lies
Too bright for our infirm Delight
The Truths superb surprise
As Lightning to the Children eased
With explanation kind
The Truth must dazzle gradually
Or every man be blind--

The Riddle we can guess
We speedily despise--
Not anything is stale so long
As Yesterdays surprise--

Had I not seen the Sun
I could have borne the shade
But Light a newer Wilderness
My Wilderness has made--

Drowning is not so pitiful
As the attempt to rise.
Three times, tis said, a sinking man
Comes up to face the skies,
And then declines forever
To that abhorred abode,
Where hope and he part company--
For he is grasped of God.
The Makers cordial visage,
However good to see,
Is shunned, we must admit it,
Like an adversity.
1732.
My life closed twice before its close;
It yet remains to see
If Immortality unveil
A third event to me,
So huge, so hopeless to conceive
As these that twice befell.
Parting is all we know of heaven,
And all we need of hell. |
