Okay, this story takes place in the middle of season 4, just after Riley was taken to that hospital after the first time Buffy met Adam. It involves a major character death, but I’m not being mean, I love that character. This fic is also WAY too long, but I can’t be bothered putting it into parts.

Note: I really don’t care if you flame me.

Disclaimer: Me not own Buffy. But I wish I did.

PART 1

Buffy lay face down on her collage dorm room bed. She wasn’t looking forward to Willow getting back from that study thing. She couldn’t believe all that she had lost in the space of –what- a week? But at least she had him back. Losing him would be unimaginable. Even thinking about it made her breath catch in the back of her throat. But was it worth the price……?

…… It had started last Tuesday. Her and the rest of the Scooby gang were sitting in Giles apartment. OK, maybe it wasn’t all that safe, but Buffy found it just a little hard to concentrate in Xander’s basement, what with his parents rowing upstairs. They were all still wearing the same clothes they’d worn yesterday, but it meant that Xander got to keep that ‘I love dirt’ Tee-shirt on. It was just so cute. Buffy, she warned herself, don’t get distracted. How do you kill a machine that so far seems invincible?

Willow was on the net, trying to hack into some secret files.

"They’ve all been deleted, Buff" She said looking up, "Oh wait… I’ve got something. It’s a list or something… Ew."

"Ew? Ew is bad, right?" Anya asked.

"Very bad. Listen to this. Angoratha demons left lower limb, barrileirum’s fire animator, that means he can breathe fire! Er.. Vampires right arm… Giles? What’s a ‘spirit task’?"

"A spirit task? One would imagine that it was similar to a spirit stone.."

"Oh I had one of those!" Anya cried. She’d been looking bored since they’d got here. She still hadn’t become part of the Scooby gang yet. She was different, too different for her and Buffy to really connect. But Willow felt sorry for her. "It gives powers right? Mystical stuff that this robot-Frankenstein thingy couldn’t even understand."

"Unless it’d been programmed into him." Buffy said in a flat voice. "We’ve got to think of a way to stop him."

"I’ve been trying to figure out a way of doing that," Willow stated glumly, "But the best I got was give him a computer virus."

"What’s wrong with that?" Xander asked.

"The intuitive aren’t stupid. They’ll have given him some sort of protection unit." Buffy answered. She couldn’t see a way out of this.

But she had other worries.

"Listen, me and Will and Anya have to go get Riley."

"Excuse me, why me?" Anya squealed, angry.

"The intuitive doesn’t know yours or Willows faces, and we need Giles to do all the research he can."

Buffy led them to the ex. Mayor’s office.

"Well this doesn’t really bring back pleasant memories. What are we doing here?" Willow asked, trying desperately not to sound nervous. But her body language gave her away completely. Her hands playing nervously with the toggles on her coat, she had her shoulders hunched and kept getting nervous shivers down her back.

"The mayor would’ve had documents saying all the secret and military hospitals in Sunnydale." Buffy answered.

She determinedly swung open one of the filing cabinets. Rifling through general hospitals, private hospitals, nursing homes, until she found a document that just said. M. hospital: lower bank ground 5379.

"Oh, officer!", Anya cried in a strange sort of squeal.

"No, Anya, that is not being flirty at all!" Buffy shouted. It had been her plan that Anya would distract the guard, then her and willow would sneak in and pretend to be doctors.

"Ok, then what about this, hey Mr-commando-guy, take a hike and let me and my ‘friends’ past or I’ll beat you up so bad you’ll wish I could still put curses on people!" Anya yelled.

"Err, guys, loudness not good for secret mission situations." Willow pointed out.

"Yeah," said Anya, "Especially when there’s a really ugly looking guy behind you Buffy."

Buffy spun around and found herself face to face with a real traditional monster type. Made up from bits and pieces of demons, this thing would scare anyone. Except the slayer. This was Adam.

"I suggest you take her logical advice" He said, and lunged at Buffy.

* * *

"So, G-man, found anything?"

"No, and I might have if you could distract your self from that packet of Twinkies and help me look," Giles sighed, "Sometimes I do think you are good for nothing, Alexander Harris."

"But you wouldn’t ever tell me so as not to harm my fragile ego, right?" Xander grinned.

He picked up the least dusty book.

And flicked through the pages pretending to read.

"Come here, Xander, I think I’ve found something."

"What is it?"

"Look at this," Giles showed him an old, half burned picture of some big wooden-metal thing. It was holding wand, and it seemed to be burning its arm. "See this? This is the medieval version of Frankenstein. The wand is the traditional symbol of wizardry and all things magical."

"What’s it mean?" Xander asked.

"It means that if we get there in time… See how the wand burns him? This could mean that what Professor Walsh thought was going to help him, could destroy him!"

"I have been doing more research." Adam said, to a battered, bruised and chained up Buffy. She could see Willow and Anya in similar states on either side.

"The killing kind?" She said, bitterly.

"No." Adam replied, "Research on your friends."

He spun around and stared at Willow. "A witch, If not a very good one," and to Anya "An ex. Demon, trapped in a mortals body. How pathetic."

"Seeing as you are all enchanters in some shape or form, I suppose you know what this is?"

He held up a jagged, dull coloured rock, about the size of his huge hands.

"Yet more research has led me to believe that this has special powers."

He squeezed tight, and all of a sudden, beams of light burst out of it. There was a sound, like a low whispering. Then all the beams, which were pinkish in colour, gathered together and headed towards Willow. Grimacing away, she looked at Buffy, then disappeared.

"Where’s she gone!?" Anya screamed.

"Do not worry. She is safe. She is at your collage, in her room. In the morning she will go to classes and not remember a thing about all of this." He paused, "As you can see I am still trying out the interesting things this can do…"

He was stopped mid sentence, sensing something behind him. He swivelled around and saw Riley with explosives strapped to his back.

"We meet again, brother" Adam grinned evilly.

As Riley ran forward, Adam squeezed the rock in both hands, and this time orangey coloured beams came out. As they hit him his weapons were gone.

"You go first." He said, and the spear in his arm extended so it was nearly at Riley’s throat.

"You deny that you are my blood, my family. It hurts. So you have to feel pain too."

Buffy could see the sweet breaking out on Riley’s forehead. He tried not to look at her, tried not to seem pleading.

Just as the tip of the spear was about to slice Riley’s throat,

Xander leapt onto Adam, grabbling desperately for the spirit stone.

"Riley, run!" he yelled.

Riley, who had been frozen with fear, didn’t need telling twice. He ran to the trapped slayer, trying to break the thick, old-fashioned chains.

Giles was there too, trying to release Anya.

Xander wasn’t doing a very good job of fighting Adam; he only had a small samurai sword and a crossbow. But he held on tight to the hulk of Demon and metal. Adam placed him on the ground, held by his hair and hit him twice, three times, then picked him up and tried to kill him using all the weapons he had been built with.

As they were fighting Buffy got a chance to talk to Giles.

"You see the nasty thing about the spirit stone is that it can kill people, but if you use it again after that, the other person comes back to life and the person who used it dies."

"So all we have to do is get him to kill some one and then use it again?" she asked him.

"Yes, he’ll even die if someone else uses it, but so will the person who used it"

"Then if he doesn’t use it again we’ll blow him up like we always do."

Adam meanwhile had thrown Xander on the floor, in a bloody, battered heap. From where Buffy was standing she couldn’t see him breathing.

"Oh no! Giles, please say it works with people he kills himself"

Buffy was angry now. He’d nearly killed her boyfriend, maimed/killed her best friend, and tied her up like an animal. He was going to pay.

"Riley, get a move on with those chains" she whispered.

But Adam was no longer distracted by the strange boy who had jumped on him, and he was again coming towards Buffy.

"Try and trick me again…" he started.

Then he scratched the spirit stone, making a strange eerie sound.

Again the beams came out, but this time they were as black as night and they gathered around Anya.

Buffy watched as a human shaped light came out of her, and Anya breathed in in alarm. Then her head slid slowly down and rested on her neck.

Riley, giving up on the chains he couldn’t break, walked nervously towards her, took her pulse and shook his head slowly at the others.

"I know what you will think now." Adam said, a delighted half-smile on his face, "You think that I will use this stone again. You forget, I’ve done my research. Besides, I wasn’t programmed to use the black arts too much. I have enough physical strength to take down all of you." To prove a point he knocked out Giles.

And again he pounced on Riley. Riley ran twisting and turning, looking for a weapon, then he seized the crossbow on the floor. He didn’t notice that Xander was gone.

Xander staggered over to Anya, barely alive, his breath coming out in weak gasps.

"Anya," he said, his heart breaking.

"Xander, use that sword to get me out" Buffy said, but he hardly heard her.

"Please wake up, Anya!" he cried, soft, sweet sobs.

Riley was firing at Adam from behind a stack of lead piping. It was to small a space for Adam to get in.

Xander caught a glimpse of something out the corner of his eye. The spirit stone.

Buffy saw what he was going to do.

"Xander don’t" she said firmly.

"What’s the problem?" Xander said, hysterical by now, "It’ll bring her back from… where she’s gone and kill Adam."

"It’ll also kill you!"

Xander didn’t reply. He was fiddling with his fingers. Then he spoke very quickly.

"Y’know what, Buff? You’re my favourite slayer and the first time I saw you I fell off my skateboard. And could you tell Willow that … I love her and … I’m sorry I nicked her Barbie doll and once pushed her out of that tree."

"Don’t you dare Xander!" Buffy screamed, not caring any more if Adam heard. "You’re hurting and you’ve lost so much blood you’re hysterical but this is just dumb, I won’t let you…"

But he had already picked up the spirit task and paused before scratching it with his shaking fingers.

Tears rolled down Buffy’s face as she watched Xander fall in a heap on the ground, watched the light come out of him, brighter than Anya’s, she watched as Adam fizzled down into a pile of dust and shavings, and she watched as Anya slowly opened her eyes and surveyed the scene.

Buffy wasn’t used to being chained up and helpless.

Riley came slowly out from behind the piping and joined her.

PART 2

"Ashes to ashes, dust to dust" said the priest.

Buffy watched as her friend was laid to rest under a headstone saying ‘Alexander LaVelle Harris’ and nothing else.

Surely he deserved something more?

Buffy looked around. She could see Willow crying on Giles shoulder. She had been shocked to learn that she had been the victim of a memory erase. But all that would be going through her mind now would be, "what am I going to do without him?"

Next to them were Xander’s parents, obviously thinking "We should have taken better care of him" The official report had said that he died in a freak accident in an abandoned warehouse just behind a military hospital.

Just a kid messing around, everyone thought.

Standing slightly away from everyone else was Anya. She wasn’t used to pain, defiantly wasn’t used to anyone caring about her enough to die so she could live. A single tear weaved its path down her cheek.

There was also a surprise guest of Cordeilia. Even in her stylish black suit she looked worse for wear, like she’d been up all night crying.

Riley placed his hand on Buffy’s shoulder as the mourners spilt up.

"He was a great guy." Riley said.

"Yeah. I never realised how much I’d miss him if he was gone." She walked towards Cordeilia, Anya and Willow.

"This is the point where Xander’d make some joke to cheer us all up" Cordeilia said. "I always thought his jokes were dumb" And she laughed.

"It’s true though, isn’t it?" Willow said quietly "He was so unappreciated. You’d never think of him as an action guy, he was more like a clown. Except he hated clowns."

"He saved my mortal life" Anya muttered "He loved me"

"Don’t you think it’s weird that everyone except me and Buff have been out with him?" Riley said. The girls turned round and glared at him.

"Wrong time, sweetheart." Said Buffy, leaning against his chest.

Buffy turned and looked at the grave with ‘Alexander LaVelle Harris’ on it one more time. She blew him a kiss and walked away.
