Here I am going to post the top 10 in everything from books to music as I see them. I'm sure no one will agree with every one of them, and my personal preferences will be seen clearly. Still, for what it's worth, here they are:
Top 10 Songs of All Time
*Based on popularity, musical quality, voice, depth of lyrics, degree of musical innovation, and last but certainly not least, my own person preferences.
10. "Running on Empty" Jackson Browne: Browne has one of the best voices in music, and this is an excellent tune. It is intrinsic in Americans to never quit moving, and this is what this song is all about.
9. "You Can't Always Get What You Want" The Rolling Stones: The Stones will go down as one of the greatest bands in history, and this is one of their finest songs. It also has a nice little message to it.
8. "We've Got Tonight" Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band: This is one of the great acts of classic rock performing one of the most tender love songs ever recorded. The piano is beautiful.
7. "Hotel California" The Eagles: This song is one of the best-selling of all times. It has great music and twisted complicated lyrics that makes one think.
6. "Jack and Diane" John Mellencamp: I can't go a week without flipping on the radio and hearing this song. It has the small-town appeal, a great rhythm, and reminds us all of those youthful days.
5. "Tupelo Honey" Van Morrison: The best love song I have ever heard. The emotions are pure and heart-felt. If this one doesn't touch you, then you may never find love.
4. "Fool In the Rain" Led Zeppelin: "Stairway to Heaven" has been called the best rock song ever by some. Though I like it, I prefer this one. It keeps a nice up-tempo rhythm and allows Robert Plant to express himself vocally like only he can.
3. "Walking In Memphis" Marc Cohn: This is a beautiful song about the spirituality of music, and the emotional high one reaches at times when music possesses him.
2. "River of Dreams" Billy Joel: I love the background singers, the incredibly voice of Joel, the powerful piano, and the depth of these lyrics are unrivaled by any other song I have ever heard.
1. "The Times, They Are A-Changing" Bob Dylan: The most influential artist and songwriter of all times, it is impossible to find a musican today who was not influenced by him either directly or indirectly. This is one of his most socially aware and lyrically stunning songs. Dylan changed the face of music, and even the world, with a guitar, a harmonica, a voice, and wonderful words.
