Sheryl Crow--The Globe Sessions
Rating: 5 Stars
I have always been a big Sheryl Crow fan, and this album is her best one yet. It is a more mature and better sounding album than the other two. Sheryl is capable of singing a haunting ballad like "Crash and Burn", a smooth track like "My Favorite Mistake", and an up-tempo song like "It Don't Hurt", and make them all sound excellent. The music is cutting edge, yet is strangely remniscent of the great classic rock style in many ways. Lyrically, the depths she explores in such tunes as "Riverwide", "The Difficult Kind", and "Crash and Burn" contain wonderful rhythm and imagery while the other songs contain less depth, but are nontheless well-written. Clearly the best song musically and lyrically was written by one, if not the greatest artists of all time, Bob Dylan. She handles this song excellently, and it is my favorite track of the CD.
However, I think the thing that is most meritorious about Sheryl Crow's music is her voice. She may not be the best female vocalist, but her voice is unique, recognizable and passionate. Whether she is conveying the pain of "Anything But Down" and "Crash and Burn", the irony of "It Don't Hurt" or "Members Only", or pensiveness of "Riverwide", we feel because of her voice.
You won't find feel-good music or pretty Celine-like love songs on this album, but you will find a mature look at love and life and all of Miss Crow's thoughts on it. It is definately worth picking up.
