Wednesday Night Wrestling:
14/4/99
Hosted By:Ed Lock & TNT
Credit:Ivan Mold & the IWA Wrestling Magazine
The IWA provided an entertainment packed evening with their best Wednesday night show to date, featuring TNT and IWA president Ed Lock on commentary and Paris Tenana doing duty as ring announcer. First on the agenda was an interview with former IWA heavyweight champ, burger eating bully Mark Mercedes and his entourage known as Club Mercedes, featuring his manager, Curtis Hughes, personal trainer Quickdraw Formosa and his lawyer Percy Sludge. The enthusiastic crowd let out with a bellowing chant of "Where's your belt???".
Before the scheduled interview could take place, Mercedes jumps interviewer Tyrone Townsend from behind whilst his cohort Formosa beat into him with a walking stick. TNT came to the aid of Tyrone and threw Percy Sludge out of the ring, scaring the other guys into backing off. Tyrone asked Ed Lock to sanction a match between him and Formosa for later, the president agrees, the match is booked and Club Mercedes leave the ring to resounding jeers.. Referee Graham "fozzy" Young is then introduced for the evening, to the usual manic cheering.
Wayne "The Punisher" Pickford v Michael Premutico
Wily veteran Pickford again demonstrated that for reasons unfathomable to most wrestling fans he has a problem with Graham "Fozzy" Young officiating his matches. Premutico started things off with a shoulder tackle and a vicious drop-kick on Pickford, who slid out between the ropes for a breather. When Pickford reentered the ring it was with a handful of Premutico's hair which he handily used to apply the young rookies face to the turnbuckle. Premutico turned it around by with a big Irish whip and The Punisher was resting at ringside again. Pickford then grabbed a microphone off the commentary table and told the audience to shut up because he "couldn't work in these sorts of conditions". Needless to say, the volume increased.
Premutico held his own against his more seasoned opponent, countering Pickfords rule breaking with sound wrestling skill, and refusing to be intimidated by Pickfords overbearing persona. At one point, when the Punisher was reprimanded by Fozzy for using the ropes as leverage during a figure four leg lock, the Punisher was heard to utter: " but the rings too small", which wasn't enough to stop Premutico gaining an advantage with a sunset flip and scoring a two count, which sent Pickford back to his bag of dirty tricks and earnt Premutico a few low blows which prompted TNT to comment that "you could get away with that sort of thing at Ingleburn but not here in Bankstown".
Just when we all thought Premutico was in with a chance, he missed a forearm splash which allowed Pickford to regain control and to go on to win with a Tombstone. Just to show that as he's a bad winner, Pickford then handcuffed Premutico to the ropes and then applied the nightstick. To top off that display of sportsmanship, Pickford went on to say that he'd never seen so many cowards AND ugly women in one building.
Winner: Wayne "The Punisher" Pickford
SPECIAL GRUDGE MATCH
Tyrone Townsend v Michael "Quick Draw" Formosa
Formosa was, of course, accompanied to ringside by the rest of Club Mercedes to the expected boos and screams of "you suck Formosa" whilst Tyrone entered to an almost unprecedented hysteria. They started out pushing and shoving at each other when Tyrone laid an atomic drop on Formosa and followed it quickly with a clothesline, which sent Formosa scurrying to ringside and the safety of Mercedes" comforting arms (aw shucks).
When Formosa reentered the ring they engaged in a test of strength, which culminated in Tyrone stomping on Quickdraws toes. Mercedes then tripped Ty as he ran into the ropes, then interfered some more, finally laying two burger drivers on the fallen IWA owner and causing TNT to storm into the ring for the second time that night. Sometime during the melee, Mercedes applied a deft headbutt to his lawyer, Percy Sludge to thank him for his attempts to aid Townsend. As Tyrone Townsend is carried backstage on a stretcher, Ed lock announces his win due to the disqualification of Formosa.
Winner Tyrone Townsend
Mehdi Basiri v Vulcan
Referee Brad "Skinny" McQuinney
Mehdi and Vulcan got off to a fast start for two big men but to give a real recap of this match I'd have to write side head lock more times than I'd care to. It was back and forth with no man gaining advantage for any length of time but Vulcan seemed to have a little more endurance than Mehdi. When the crowd got behind the Aryan Warrior he really started to fire and executed a perfect back body drop on Vulcan to turn things around for a little while.
Despite the support of the fans, Mehdi just wasn't good enough when Vulcan applied his running powerbomb to score the win. Unfortunately Vulcan was another bad winner and he then harassed several children in the audience before grabbing a microphone and announcing that the IWA had better see about getting some sort of security for him.
Winner Vulcan
IWA HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP Special Dog Collar match
Mark Mercedes v 7ft Thunder
Obviously, the stipulations in this match call for both men to be chained together by a pair of dog collars and a length of chain, no DQ. This match was the first of its kind in Australia Before the match started, Tyrone Townsend appeared, wearing a neck brace and suffering from spinal compression, to have a few words with champ 7ft Thunder. Percy Sludge was also present and it was made clear to all that he was finished with Club Mercedes and that he like to represent tyrone should he wish to take legal action over the incidents that took place earlier. Thunder comes out and tells us that Mercedes may have an advantage because Thunder isn't used to gimmick matches, so he'd figure he'd just crush him.
Ref Fozzy had to make several attempts to get both men into the dog collars as Curtis Hughes tried to chain Mercedes first to paris Tenana, and then to Fozzy himself but eventually the match got underway. It was expectedly violent, and had choke holds, chains raked across the eyes and even a move I'm not sure of the technical name that looked really uncomfortable and featured the chain between the legs of Mercedes and was something akin to a chain loaded wedgie. (Perhaps we'll call it "yanking his chain") The burger eating bully then managed to somehow detach the chain from Thunders collar and started using it as a whip on him. Ed Lock rules that the match must continue even though Thunder is no longer chained to Mercedes.
Mercedes then starts to take off his end of the chain in the corner of the ring. Vulcan appears at ringside with a brief case, he leaps into the ring, swings the case at Mercedes, the fat guy ducks, and Thunder collects the briefcase in the face. Mercedes quickly covers him and gets the three count and is once again IWA heavyweight champion, making Thunders reign all of 10 days long. Thunder and Vulcan then got all confrontational despite Vulcan trying to tell Thunder that he was aiming for Mercedes. Things got physical, they pushed and shoved at each other and a host of guys came storming out from back stage to separate them. The crowd wanted them to go at it then and there but Ed Lock wouldn't sanction it, although it seems that a Thunder v Vulcan is definite for the future. Winner and once again IWA heavyweight Champion Mark Mercedes.
And a bloody good time was had by all.
