Owen Hart, the youngest child of one of the most world-renown wrestling families in the world, The Harts of Calgary, died Sunday night after a fall during the live showing of WWF's "Over the Edge" pay per view. Owen, age 34, was preparing to make a grand entrance as the Blue Blazer by decending from the ceiling rafters at the Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri in front of a sold out crowd of 18,000 plus fans, when fate took a turn for the worse. Owen was ready to begin his descent of more than 50 feet from the rafters, as it became apparent that he was not connected to his safety harness. Owen free-fell the 50 plus feet to the arena floor. As he landed, his head was slammed against the turnbuckle and ring ropes and he then fell into the ring. He sustained multiple injuries, and as CPR was being performed by EMT's and the Kansas City Police Department, he was listed as a Trauma Code. Owen was taken to the Truman Medical Center in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
As of the time I am posting this page, the statement made by the WWF is that this was a total accident. Vince McMahon, owner of the federation stated that the stunt had been rehearsed earlier in the day, and everything went smoothly. Vince has also stated that there will be an ongoing investigation, and for now, he has no other answers.
CBC news has posted an article stating that the Kansas City Police now believe that Owen Hart's Blue Blazer costume may have caused the fall.
This evening, May 24, the superstars of both the WCW and WWF had a 10-toll bell tribute in honor of Owen. The WWF superstars sported black bands with the initials "OH" around their arms, while the 2 hour show was held in honor of Owen. Throughout the 2 hours, superstars told "Owen stories" and shared their fondest memories and sorrows for the man that they so loved and lost. A dedication video was shown with Owen's greatest moments narrated by Vince McMahon. Many of the superstars showed respect for Owen throughout the night in other ways. Jeff Jarrett defeated Test using the Sharpshooter, a patented Hart family move. The Rock dedicated the People's Elbow that was landed on Val Venis to Owen, and at the closing of the show, Stone Cold Steve Austin stood in the ring while Owen's picture was shown on the Titantron, and gave a 2-beer salute to Owen's memory. Raw/War Zone gained an overall Monday night rating of 7.15, with people all over the world watching the tribute to Owen Hart.
Owen joined the WWF in 1986. Over the past 13 years, Owen put on dozens of memorable performances, wrestling under aliases such as the Blue Blazer, the Rocket, the Black Hart, and alongside various partners such as Koko B. Ware, the Hart Foundation (including the late Brian Pillman), Yokozuna, the Nation of Domination, and as of late, Jeff Jarrett. He has held many titles, including: WWF Tag Team title (4 times), the Intercontinental Championship twice and the European Championship once. Owen also reigned as the 1994 King of the Ring Tournament winner, where he crowned himself "The King of Harts." Owen was also a winner of several "Slammy Awards." He has also held titles in other federations throughout Japan and Canada. Some of his most memorable angles include the feuds with Steve Austin, Ken Shamrock (who could forget the Lion's Den cage match), Degeneration-X, and his brother, Bret. Owen's last match was with his tag team partner, Jeff Jarrett, versus Edge and Christian. In his last interview prior to the ill-fated match with the Godfather, Owen said that "he would come out on top, because he trained, took his vitamins and drank his milk."
Owen is survived by his wife Martha and two young children, Oje and Athena, 11 brothers and sisters, including current WCW superstar, Bret Hart, mother Helen, and father, Stu.
My heart and my prayers go out to Owen's family and friends, to the WWF and all of Owen's peers, and to all of the fans who were unfortunate enough to witness this tragic event. You are in my thoughts. I will always remember Owen as a true hero, as he died doing what he loved most---wrestling and entertaining his many fans. Owen had long and hard fought to prove himself as a great wrestler, and did until his very end. Owen, i'm so sorry that you had to go this way, but you will be forever remembered as one of the greatest wrestlers to step into the ring, and will always be in my "hart" as one of the greatest people to have ever lived. Thank you for all of the years that you've given to us, and for all of the memories.
A private family service will be held at McInnis & Holloway's "Park Memorial Chapel" on Monday, May 31, 1999 at 11:00am. Everyone is welcome to gather around the Funeral Home to pay tribute to Owen, but services inside the Chapel are private.

I would like to make one final statement concerning professional wrestling. All of my life, I've been a dedicated fan of professional wrestling. All that i've ever heard about wrestling is that it is nothing but a bunch of hoaxes, scams, and smoke and mirrors. While I believe this is true for part of it, I would just like to remind everyone that these are real people that perform these stunts who can get real injuries. Every week, many wrestlers go into a ring and risk their lives in order to put on a show and entertain people all over the world. Things do go wrong, and there's always a possibility that something like this could happen with any event. Thank you to all of the wrestlers who risk your lives so many times in order to bring smiles to so many people's faces.
Rest in peace, Owen. May God be with you forever.
I will always miss you Owen, you were a great pro wrestler, and you flow in wrestlings viens still today. YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. -Superman3032
