Vince Clarke was one of the original members of Depeche Mode(joined by Martin Gore and Andrew Fletcher). He was the songwriter of the group and was the lead singer before they aquired the permanent frontman of the group,David Gahan. Clarke was mainly responsible of the first album on the band,Speak and Spell. He wrote almost all of the songs in that album except for one song, which was written by Martin Gore. After the first year of touring in promotion of their first album,Clarke decided to leave the band.
After leaving Depeche Mode, he started another band, whom he called Yazoo. Clarke still did not find what he was looking for in his new band. After some work with Yazoo, he decided to leave the band. He then met another musician, Andy Bell, who wanted to form a synthpop band. Clarke was interested. The two formed a band which they later called Erasure. This duo became one of the most influential bands in the 80s with such hits as "Chains of Love" and "A Little Respect". Erasure still continues to be a top seller in the music industry.
