Andrew Fletcher said in an interview once that "Alan is the musician in the band". And indeed he was. Martin was the song writer, Dave was the lead singer/frontman, Andrew was the back-up musician, and Alan was the one responsible for the background music(lead keyboard,piano,synthesizer,back-up
singer, and drummer). Indeed, he brought something to Depeche Mode that will never be replaced. Though he was not an original part of the band, he became one. His talent and hard working qualities was noticed by many and for that he was praised.

As a trained musician, Alan was disciplined and knew what he was doing. Unfortunately he felt as though he did not get enough credit in the band, which he felt he deserved...and indeed, he rightfully deserved it!! As a result, in 1995, after experiencing personal problems with the band, Alan announced his departure from Depeche Mode. He was quoted as saying that his departure would be best for all the members of the band. Alan will be greatly missed!!!

Now he is focusing his attention on his on musical projects. One of his projects is called Recoil. It is quite different from Depeche Mode. It displays a haunting yet hypnotic type of music. Alan maybe gone from Depeche Mode, but his music still continues to live on.
