The faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all …, before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were – Romans 4:16-17

In a word, Abraham believed that God could do the impossible, i.e. what is beyond our limited experience as human beings. The whole Bible testifies of such miracles. A great nation walks through the Red Sea on dry land between the walls of water on either side. For one day the sun stands still in the sky without setting. To quote a third example, the prophet Jonah is swallowed by a great fish and spued out on the land unharmed after three days and three nights inside.

And you maintain, as a reasonable person, that it si too much to expect you to believe such “far-fetched phantasy”? That seals your verdict on the credibility of the Bible; so you decide to reject Holy Scripture absolutely. Well remember: God will not remove the stumbling block simply for your intellect. Abraham was not a simple soul after all. He had come to know God personally. If the eternal God is omniscient, omnipotent and beyond comprehension, then His actions must also bear these characteristics. Biblical reports o His intervention in the normal run of things are a proof of His existence. If you accept this argument, the consequence must be that the Bible, with its record of God’s miracles, however much men may mock at them, genuinely is the Word of God.

The unreasonableness is on man’s side and lies in his intellect. God, however, demands faith.
