Preparations to Drill Holes in Wood - To prevent splintering when drilling, place a scrap of wood of same approximate size under the wood to be drilled. Hold firmly together with a C-clamp. Stand straight over your work and drill straight down. Never drill at a slant. Drill 'pilot' holes first with a smaller bit to make drilling easier and to check the alignment.
Cleaning Up: Cover the end of your shop vacuum hose with a screen mesh and secure it with duct tape or a rubber band. Choose a mesh size large enough so that it won't clog up, but small enough to hold back the items you want to keep. When you turn on the vacuum, dust passes through the mesh, but nuts, bolts, and small items stop at the screen.
Glue Clean-Up: When working with a glue gun, after your project is finished, use a low setting on a hair dryer to melt away all of the glue strings.
General Drilling Tips: Clamp materials down, particularly when using a power drill. Hold the drill firmly, leaving the motor on until the bit is withdrawn from the wood. To avoid breaking small bits, don't tilt the drill once the bit has entered the wood. Wear safety goggles, especially when drilling brittle surfaces.
Polishing Mahogany: Clean with suds from baby soap. Rinse with water/vinegar mixture.
When painting any object with acrylic paints, the undercoat leaves a rough feel. Save your brown paper bags from the grocery store, tear them in large squares, crumple them in your hand and use it as if it were sandpaper.. no scratches, no 'raw fingers' and practically no mess. Use over and over until it wears out. Saves money!
Remove alcohol stains on mahogany furniture, rub stain with the meat from a pecan. |
