Protecting Outdoor Projects
A successful outdoor wood coating should contain 3 ingredients: a water repellent, a mildewcide and an ultraviolet light blocker.
Deck Stains
Use a one-step, oil-based stain for a clear stain. It will penetrate the wood and will not crack or peel. Brush on a new coat every few years.
If you don't find a deck product with a stain colour you like, try coating your project with a clear, oil-based penetrating sealer, and then follow up with an oil-based stain that has the desired colour. The sealer with repel water but allow an oil-based stain to adhere.
Paint
Use an oil-based primer followed by a high-quality exterior latex paint. Exterior paints contain mildewcides, and the paint film will repel water and damaging UV rays. Take special care to thoroughly coat end grain and joint - the most common entry points for water. Horizontal surfaces take more of a beating from rain and sun; so, give these and additional coat. |
