Aguilera To Record Spanish Album

Singer's
LP to feature new material rather than translations of hits.

LOS
ANGELES — Christina Aguilera will record her first Spanish
album in the

summer.





But unlike some other pop stars, such as Madonna and Cypress
Hill, who have

recorded Spanish versions of their English hits, Aguilera will
record new

songs.





"Doing a Spanish album is something that I've always wanted
to do," the

19-year-old part-Ecuadorean singer said last week. "It won't
be the English

album translated over into Spanish. It will be a bunch of new
songs; a bunch

of new material."





A radio programmer at a Spanish-language station in Salinas,
Calif., said

Aguilera's decision to record a full Spanish album is a smart
one, judging by

the way listeners have embraced Aguilera's Spanish version of her
hit "Genie

in a Bottle", titled "Genio Atrapado." The
rendition has gone platinum in

Mexico.





"She did a really great job with the translation," said
Vicente Romero,

programming director at KZSL-FM, which plays mostly pop music.
"I thought she

would have an accent, and she didn't."





Romero predicted the LP will quickly broaden her appeal to Latin
listeners.





"Everywhere I turn, I see her," he said. "She
seems to be getting bigger and

bigger."





Though she is not fluent in Spanish, Aguilera understands the
language,

having grown up with her Ecuadorean father speaking it at home,
according to

her RCA publicist.





Aguilera, who lived in Japan, Texas, New Jersey and Pennsylvania
while

growing up in a military family, was in Los Angeles last week to
kick off her

tour opening for hip-hop trio TLC and to help announce the
nominations for

the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards.





She nabbed two of those nominations herself. In the Best New
Artist category

she's up against Macy Gray, Kid Rock, Britney Spears and Susan
Tedeschi. The

other nomination, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for
"Genie in a Bottle,"

pits her against Madonna, who is nominated for "Beautiful
Stranger," from the

soundtrack to "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me."





"This is a woman that I totally look up to as an
entertainer, as a female,

and I can't believe I'm up against her," Aguilera said.
"Wow."





Aguilera's Grammy Award recognition was the latest sign of
success in a

whirlwind year for the singer, who recently was named one of the
10 most

intriguing women of 1999 by Ladies Home Journal. Her self-titled
first album,

which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart in
September, has gone

five-times platinum. It currently sits at #4, while "What a
Girl Wants"

(RealAudio excerpt) — Aguilera's follow-up single to
"Genie in a Bottle" —

is currently #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.





"This whole year is like a snowball rolling down and getting
bigger and

bigger," she said. "I can't even believe all the stuff
that has gone on. It

went from being a dream. I would be in my hometown in Wexford,
Pa. — this

little suburb out of Pittsburgh — praying out of my bedroom
window, wanting

this to happen, and wanting a #1 record and whatnot. It's so
surreal what's

happened."





But some rather down-to-earth goals are on tap this year for
Aguilera, who

said her New Year's resolutions include developing a "better
eating

etiquette" and getting a driver's license. And though her
tour with TLC will

put her before arena-sized audiences, Aguilera expressed equal
excitement

that the outing means traveling by tour bus. "I've been a
commercial flier

for a while, so it will be good to be on a bus — my first
one," she said.
