STEVE BULL MBE

When Steve Bull retired this year, Wolverhampton fell silent. Known simply as ‘Bully’ to his adoring Wolves fans, Steve Bull scored 306 goals and 18 hat-tricks whilst with the Molineux club, in a career lasting 13 years.
He was forced to reitre because of that knee injury which had been troubling Bully for years. The rampaging striker played 13 times for England, scoring 4 goals- the most memorable was undoubtedly his terrific strike on his debut at Hampden Park when England beat Scotland 2-0 in the Rous Cup. He would surely have had more caps to his name if he had left Wolves. But he didn’t. He probably has regrets but has never complained. The striker stayed loyal to the Wolves cause and single handedly took them from the despair of the old Fourth Division to the brink of the Premier League. Bully once said “ If by the end of my career, Wolves have not made it to the Premiership, I will mourn.”
He had numerous offers to move to top clubs such as Nottingham Forest, Leeds, Coventry and Aston Villa, as well as bids from top Italian clubs. But the forward signed for £65,000 from Ron Saunders at West Brom, rejected these offers and stayed loyal. Steve Bull has paid the price for his loyalty- he could have achieved so much away from Wolverhampton.
In 1987/88 he scored no less than 52 times in all competitions and the strikerwho simply couldn’t stop scoring went on to score another century the next season.
Bully is arguably the greatest player to pull on a Wolves shirt and when he retired in Summer 1999 during a tour in Sweden, thousands of tributes flooded in. His services to football were recognised finally when Bully was included in the News Years Honours list and has recently been to Buckingham Palace to receive his MBE.
