HERE'S A TRUE STORY ABOUT VIET NAM !

I tell this story because...When I tell people I was in Viet Nam. One of the first things they ask is: "Did you kill anyone?"

I say, "Let me tell you a story! "

One day I was with our corpsman. We were driving on highway nine from Cam Lo on our way to Dong Ha to pick up medical supplies at the base. It was early afternoon and the sun was scorching hot. It was very quiet and peaceful as we drove along the highway. There were no other vehicles to be seen in either direction. A few miles before we reached the base at Dong Ha, we saw a man lying on the side of the road.
We stopped the Jeep, got out and walked over to the man. He had his hand on his cheek and it was bloody. He was mumbling in Vietnamese as we lifted him up and carried him to the Jeep. As we placed him in the back of the Jeep, he had to remove his hand from his face. He'd been shot through the face and blood squirted about three feet into the air. Like a stream of water from a water fountain !
I drove the Jeep as fast as I could while the Corpsman sat in the back with the man, holding a compress on the wound to stop the bleeding. We raced down highway nine and into the Dong Ha base to the medical [sick bay] tent.
To this day, I still don't know if the wounded man was a civilian, a South Vietnamese soldier or a Viet Cong? But I'm sure that on that day, we saved the life of another man.
We did a good thing that day.
We did a good thing everyday, because we fought for the freedom of other men and women.

So I tell them, next time you meet a Veteran, shake his or her hand and thank them for the good things they did.

I'M PROUD TO SAY I SERVED IN VIET NAM !
