What?

The Xbox is gaming console being released by Microsoft. The Xbox is based primarily on an advanced PC architecture. By providing the latest in graphic technology while giving the developers a familiar development environment, the Xbox allows for excellent games from day one since developers can spend their time on creating great games rather than learning the architecture. The Xbox has a built-in DVD player, custom USB ports, and powerful graphical hardware.

Who?

Intel will be providing the 733-mhz CPU for the Xbox, while Nvidia will be providing the graphics engine (NV2A) and the MCP-X (Media Communications Processor) that performs the highly demanding multimedia processing for broadband connectivity, communications, and breakthrough audio capabilities of the Xbox. Thomson Multimedia will provide the DVD player. Microsoft will put everything together in one convenient gaming machine, the Xbox.

When?

The Xbox is expected to be released in the Fall of 2001 with anywhere from 15 to 35 launch games!

Where?

Microsoft plans to eschew the traditional launch of consoles that had some markets receiving the hardware and software at different times. This release strategy would leave certain countries waiting for the system for many months while it was released already in another country. Instead, the Xbox will be launched globally so that, for instance, the people in Japan will receive their Xbox at basically the same time as the US.

Why?

Microsoft wants to create a gaming platform that will be both popular and powerful. The only way to accomplish this is for them to create a revolutionary console that will excel where it really matters - the games. Also, with it superb graphical and DVD movie playback capabilities, the Xbox will help further the scope and size of the current gaming industry.

How?

Microsoft is learning from its competitor's mistakes and triumphs to better help them create a successful gaming machine. Microsoft is working hard with game developers to ensure an easy, yet quality development experience with the Xbox, giving them more time to focus on making the games great. Microsoft is also working closely with retailers to ensure that their needs are met and that the Xbox is a highly profitable product for them.
