Smuggler's Run
PS1 or PS2?

Graphics Gallery!

Why do I get the feeling this game is one system ahead? It's a great game though, don't get me wrong, but there isn't much that makes this game not something that could have been done on the original playstation. The graphics are good but there is nothing really intricate about the designs.

But aside from the graphics, this game is pretty good. You play the role of a smuggler, making sure illegal contraband enters the US safely. You must pick up stuff on one side of the border, and deposit it at a drop spot on the other side. But other than the regular pick up and drop off missions, there are other ones too. There is the scramble style where you and your teammates must grab all the of the goods before the enemy gang grabs it, the race missions where you go from checkpoint to checkpoint trying to get to the finish line before the enemy gangs and the take out out the tower missions where you must go from one radar tower to the others, knocking them down so your boss can get through safely in his chopper. All these missions you have to do with a time limit and the border patrol, CIA and even the military after you.

The damage system for this game is somewhat unique and unrealistic. But it is probably best for a game like this. You sustain damage to your car if you are hit or even if you land too hard. Your contraband loses value each time you take damage. Your health does regenerate (though your contraband value doesn't) but if you are "tagged" by the authorities when your health is nil you are arrested.

One thing that ticks me off about this game is the lack of secret vehicles. You unlock two everytime you move on to another environment, but you already know what they are and how they ride because they are all available in the freeride mode from the beginning of the game.

UPS: Huge environments, realistic damage modelling, nice storyline, smooth learning curve
DOWNS: No secret cars, unrealistic health system, should be a PS1 game
BOTTOM LINE: Fun, but there's not much that makes this not a PS1 game
FINAL SCORE: 8.0/10
