Take my soul, but not my heart. Love will stay and not depart. Flowers bloom and babies cry. No more Whispered Lullaby.
Let me tell you a little story, about two young girls form Ireland. Friends of mine you could say. A twisted story, some might not even believe, but I assure you that what I am going to tell you now is the truth. These creatures do exist and are living in this world of ours. They appear in our dreams....and nightmares. Some believe that they are only fantasy and come from children's story books. There are others who do believe, usually children and ones with open minds. These believers are the children of the Goddess and the spirit of the Earth.
It was January 1st in Dublin Ireland. There was new fallen snow on the ground and the breeze was brisk. Juliet started off to school with her books in her hands and her cousin by her side. Juliet's long, brown, curly hair swayed in the morning breeze. She had a slim figure and was always "touching up" in the girls bathroom. "Looks and brains is what makes you a real person in this world." She used this saying on her cousin, Gwen, all the time, just to get on her nerves. Juliet was smart, pretty and all Gwen ever wanted to be. Gwen had blonde hair that came down to her shoulders. She had golden shenut eyes that sparkled, but she was only 5"5, not exactly model material. Her figure was okay but didn't keep her from wishing she was more like Juliet. She was satisfactory in school, mostly C's and B's. Shakespear, however, she did quite well in. Shakespear was only one of her loves in life. She had many others, not quite.........normal. She loved mystical and fantasy books and stories. She was a great believer in spirituality, ghosts, dragons, faeries, and other enchanting creatures. Juliet thought that she was crazy and didn't believe one bit of it; she was just like the rest of the school, conceited and not open to anything but the norm. That's what made Gwen special, unique even. There were others like her, but in the world today they were very hard to find. Juliet calls them "devil worshipers" and shows no respect for them, or Gwen. Gwen knew better than that though, she knew Witches weren't devil worshipers, how can you worship something that only lives in your mind?
The attic door creaked open with such a screech it made Gwen cringe as she entered. There were spider webs and dust all over the place, which made it a more interesting place for Gwen to be. She loved the attic, just to be there made her feel welcome. There were doors all across the wall, most for storage. There was one door, however, that no one could open. It was a little grey door in the courner and it always looked so lonesome there all alone. The fact that no one knew exactly what was behind that timy door always caught Gwen's curiosity. She wondered what mystical place lay there behine the little door, that kept it from being revealed to the world. What creature lay there in it's peaceful sleep, waiting to be releases. Maybe it was another storage room, like all the others.
The door swung open and startled Gwen, Juliet stepped in.
"Dinner's ready. Grams made meatloaf." The two girls, Juliet 16 and Gwen 15 had been living with their grandmother ever since their parents died in a car accident when Juliet was 10, Gwen 9.
"I'll be down soon."
"But dinner's ready now!" Juliet said with sarcasim in her voice. Gwen got up and made her way to the door. She was sick of always arguing with Juliet, she never won. Juliet always had a way of conning her into things wether it be with a sweet tone of voice and an appealing situation that made her give in, or in other cases the pulling of hair always worked. She could be very aggressive at times.
After dinner the two girls went back up to the attic, they liked to go up there just to chat or to do their homework. Juliet would always help Gwen when she got stuck on a difficult math question. The conversation that little door came up abruptly.
"So what do you think is REALLY behind that door?" Juliet asked inquisitively.
"I really don't know. Maybe it could be a secret room, or a dungeon or some tunnel leading to another world!" Juliet made a queer face at Gwen.
"What?" Gwen asked.
"You're babbling on like an idiot is what! But it does sound exciting. I think we should try to open it up and really find out what's in there." She looked at Gwen, her blue eyes wide open and contemplating.
"Well I don't know. Maybe that door won't open for a reason. Maybe some force, or spirit of some kind is keeping it closed. I read one time that there is a ghost called Matilda will find a house that has a place in it that no one goes into. She baracades that door with a force so that no one can ever enter. She makes that place her home, and she stays there, forever. If someone is to break that force and enter her home, she puts a curse on them. It's called the 'Whispered Lullaby.'
When this force is broken, she must move to another house and find another home." Gwen's worry did not make Juliet believe what she was saying or even toake into any consideration what so ever that something might hapen. She didn't believe in that stuff, she never had, and she never would.
"That's a pil o'rubbish!" she said to Gwen as she looked at the door. "No 'force' can keep me out of anything!" With that she slid over to the wall and grabbed a hammer. She started prying at the wood with the claws of the hammer. The old wood crumbled off, and soon the little room was revealed. The room was no more than four feet high and five feet wide. There was a stone wall at the back, ike all of the other storage rooms, but there was a hole in the wall and there was nothing but black behind it. She turned around and called to Gwen. "Nice force. I told you it couldn't keep me out." Gwen slowly walked over and glanced in the little room. Excitement ruled out fear as she looked at the tiny hole in the back of the room. She stuck her hand in the little black hole, and felt around. The hole was just big enough for a small person to slide through. Unfortunately, neither of the girls was small enough to fit. Juliet picked up the hammer once again and started hammering at the small hole. Pieces of the stone slowly broke away until it was big enough for both of them to crawl through. Juliet went in first and Gwen followed with a flashlight.
The girls stood up in the darkness. Gwen switched on her flashlight to reveal a tunnel ahead of them. The girls walked slowly, everytime they passed a torch it would mysteriously light up to guide their way. The old stone walls of the tunnel seemed to jump at the touch of human flesh, and the cold cement floors pinched their bare feet as they walked on. The two girls soon came upon a staircase at the end of the tunnel. The stairs cried on each step they took. After what seemed to take forever, they soon came to the end of the twisting staircase. A tiny little door stood ahead of them, begging them to go on. Gwen opened the little door that swung open to reveal the mystical chamber. There were stone walls on all sides of the little room. Shadows hid in the courners, running away from the blissful light shimmering though a tiny window on the north wall. Smothering dust lay on a lonely forgotten wodden table that was left in the gloom of the shadows. Dolls with expressionless faces sat on the naked floor, their eyes staring at the new visitors. Gwen's face had changed from a look of excitement to a look of fear. Questions of reality entered her mind. "How did an underground tunnel come from an attic?" "How can there be a window in an underground room?" "How did the tourches light themselves?" "What if this is Matilda's Room?" These questions kept on coming to Gwen, the one who didn't question the unnatural. Juliet's cheeks were red and her eyes full of excitement. She had never seen such a place before, only in fairy tales and children's books.
"The old owners must have built it for more storage, or for other reasons. Who knows?" Juliet had no fear of this room or what was in it. Al she could think of, was building it for her own personal gain. Like a room for parties or a guest room.
Juliet walked in a beit more and picked up one of the dolls. The doll had long curly blonde hair and was wearing a flowered dress with an apron. It seemed to be very old and expensive. As Juliet put the doll down, where it had been laying lifeles before, a humming noise came from all parts of the room. Then words; a beautiful girls voice:
"Come little children come dance with me, fly with me for eternity. Give me your soul and I'll set you free. Sing with me under the moon, dance with me by the Druid's Tune."
Her voice was beautiful and she had a strong Irish accent. A grey mist sifted through the door behind Gwen. A tall beautiful woman formed in front of them. She was standing in the dingy corner of the room amongst the shadows. She was an enchanting woman with long black hair that flowed gently down her back. She wore a long white, swaying dress. There was no breeze of any kind but her dress drifted as if there was. her face was pale and her eyes were expressionless. She slowly moved toward them, her eyes burning into theirs. Gwen turned to run, but the door slammed shut in her face. The woman was still singing her longful song to them, the curse, the whispered lullaby. It was Matilda and no other. Her curse hung in the air, mesmerizing them both. Gwen had read a lot about Matilda in the past years, and remembered that when her force was broken, the intruders would enter her world the spirit world and no power would ever be able to overcome the curse. She did, however read about an incantation that could stop her, but had to be done in their world. Gwen tried to move once again for the door, but she could not move, Matilda's power was too strong. She had to concentrate hard to break the hold on them. She could not move nor talk to help Juliet. Gwen looked up at Matilda, her eyes were fixated on them, and Gwen slowly said to Matilda,
"You may not take our souls! You cannot take our souls, for we are protected by the white light, and you cannot harm us." Although Gwen had not yet done a spell of such meaning, it confused Matilda and the hold on the two girls was broken. Gwen grabbed Juliet, swung the door open and ran up the stairs. The staircase twisted and turned in every direction. As they passed the torches in the tunnel, each one was extinguished. They both crawled through the hole, and entered the attic. They were back in their own world once again. A mist entered the attic and Matilda formed in the doorway. Gwen quickly drew a penticle around them and they say in the middle of it for protection. She lit three white candles around them, but they were extinguished by Matilda. Gwen slowly rehersed the incantation three times to Matilda while spreading holy water around them.
"You may not take our souls and not our heart. Love will stay and not depart. Flowers bloom and babies cry. No more whispered Lullaby. Rest your soul and leave us now, and leave this place that you have found. Your home is not here but in heaven above we say this with the greatest love. This will not result in the worse, so take your soul, and cast no curse. Leave us now no harm has been done, and return your soul to the poerful great one. So mote it be." Gwen opened her eyes, and Matilda was gone, the little door in the corner was rebuilt and both the girls were lying on the floor. No penticle or candles were in sight. Gwen and Juliet got up and went over to the door, it opened with ease and there was no hole in the back wall.
There was not one word spoken between the girls about the attic ever again. Juliet considered it a bad dream, but Gwen knew what really happened.
Juliet and Gwen both disappeared in their late twenties, no one really knows why. No one ever knew about what hapened that night, about the curse or anything, not even their closest friends. Maybe you believe me and maybe you don't , but I will give you one pointer. Always look under your bed and check your closets at night, and never let curiosity overcome you when youre looking in the attic, because you never know what could be lying there waiting for you.
Sincerely yours,
Matilda. |
