*Goku has just used the spirit bomb on Freiza. Freiza has risen to prove that the bomb wasn't enough, then kills Krillin. However, Goku isn't the only one who goes Super Saiyan, Gohan is furious with Freiza and is determined to kill him*
Gohan: Daddy, go back to the ship, take Picollo with you. I wonna finish this battle with Freiza to the end!

So. It appears that whilst Gohan and Goku were battling, Freiza ran away because he was afraid of Super Saiyans. Goku gets really pissed off then turns Super Saiyan 2.
