T

TEAR - Ripping motion which actually involves grabbing while pulling.

TECHNIQUE SEQUENCE - A planned combination of moves which may be used defensively and offensively.

TENDERIZE - A blade principle. The utilization of the blade by WHIPPING the flat portion of the blade to first, slap the target and second, have the point dig into the target creating multiple “V” shaped wounds. Effective even through clothing.

TENDON MUSCLE - Any CONTROL MANIPULATION techniques that targets tendons and muscle trauma specifically. Most techniques are combination techniques targeting muscle, tendons, joints, and nerve cavities.

THIRD POINT OF VIEW - This refers to a bystander's point of view. It is how he views the encounter. As you develop sequential patterns of defense and offense it is highly recommended that you consider his point of view for it may reveal other existing openings or uses of natural weapons, that you may have otherwise overlooked. This point of view increases you ability to observe additional openings or counters that you may have missed if you were only to consider the FIRST and SECOND POINTS OF VIEW.

THREE POINT STANCE - The forcing of an opponent weight onto 1 feet and/or 1 knee, and/or 1 or 2 hands, elbows, or shoulders or combination thereof adding up to three (3), to assist in controlling height, width, and depth while the 1 remaining appendage is CONTROL MANIPULATED. This definition specifically excludes 2 feet because this is the human body’s natural carriage position, however, 2 feet forced up on the toes to control height, could constitute a valid 2 point stance. A principle that forces an opponent to support him/her self at three points while the fourth is being CONTROL MANIPULATED. Height, width, and depth is no longer under his control.

THREE FINGER GRAB - This term is derived from a grab that only utilizes three fingers and purposely excludes the index finger to allow for directed energy flow commonly used in CONTROL RELEASE applications but may be used offensively as well.

THREE POINT BODY ROTATION - An offensive or defensive technique or maneuver that requires rotational force or torque at three body points in relative unison. Usually occurs at three different HEIGHT ZONES.

THREE POINT STANCE - A CONTROL MANIPULATION PRINCIPLE that forces an opponent to brace him/her self on three limbs or points because of height, width, and depth control of a CONTROL MANIPULATED anatomical body part. This position precludes opportunity to retaliate.

THREE POINTS OF VIEW – Each and every predicament may be understood from three points of view.

THRUST - A particular method of execution used to propel a strike. It resembles an explosive push type action.

THUMB COMPRESSION – Lock on the thumb that utilizes joint FULCRUMING.

THUMB FLEX - Opposing the natural direction of the digit through applications for CONTROL MANIPULATION.

THUMB LOCK – Manipulation executed with primary leverage directed at the thumb joints.

THUMB LOCK, BRACE - Manipulation executed against the thumb joint that may be braced against your body, your opponent’s body, or an environmental object.

THUMB LOCK, PIN – Manipulation principle executed in conjunction with a THUMB LOCK.

TOE(S) FLEX - A pressing motion against the toes causing a possible hyper-extension. Used usually in conjunction with an ANKLE FLEX for CONTROL MANIPULATION.

TOE/HEEL LINE- Method of determining the proper width of a NEUTRAL BOW AND ARROW STANCE, where the toe of the forward foot is in line with the heel of the rear foot.

TORQUE - Twisting and rotating action used to position your body and muscles to work at maximum efficiency. See ROTATING FORCE.

TRACKING - Is a more specific way of CONTOURING that is used to obtain precision accuracy. It normally follows a limb of the body that is already on target so that the accuracy of your follow-up is guaranteed. For example, if your were executing a right two finger hook to your opponent's left eye, you could leave it on target so that your left hand could follow the contour of your right arm in order to accurately poke the same eye. Timing in this instance is crucial. Simultaneously, as your right hook leaves your opponent's eye, your left finger poke must make contact to the very same target. Switching weapons at the last minute makes the second strike obscure.

TRANSITION - The stage between moves; moves within moves.

TRANSITIONAL MOVES - The in-between moves of a technique that can also supply important answers in terms of defense or offense. These answers lie dormant within the transition of your sequential flow. They can surface anytime you desire while moving toward or away from your opponent. Transitions can work well in a SET or FORM, where the last move of the first technique could be employed as the first move of the second technique, or vice versa.

TWO HAND REVERSE ROLLING BALL - The utilization in CONTROL MANIPULATION techniques of the COMPLEMENTARY INTER-LOCKING CIRCLES.

TWO HAND VISE - The utilization of both hands in consort as a compression device for the purpose of SEIZING parts of your opponents body.

TWO POINT BODY ROTATION - The execution of an offensive or defensive technique or maneuver that requires rotational force or torque at two body points in relative or sequential unison.

TWO POINT STANCE - The forcing of an opponents weight onto (2) feet (on the toes) or knees, or two (2) hands, elbows, or shoulder, or combination thereof adding up to two (2), to assist in controlling height, width, and depth while the subject is CONTROL MANIPULATED.

U

UN-NATURAL GRAB, SEIZE - When an individual uses the hands as a seizing mechanism by twisting or contorting the body in a physically, mechanically un-natural manner.

UNCOMMITTED ACTION - Moves that are not committed to taking a specific course of action. Freedom to take action at any time, to any target, in any manner desired.

UNINTENTIONAL MOVES - Unanticipated reactionary moves on the part of an opponent that, although accidental or unplanned, can cause injury if they remain unchecked.

UNIVERSAL BLOCK - A defensive maneuver utilizing an inward block in conjunction with a downward block to one side to defend multiple HEIGHT ZONES simultaneously. This same maneuver when performed upward or downward becomes a WEDGE BLOCK. See also UNIVERSAL VISE.

UNIVERSAL PATTERN - A three dimensional pattern of movements conceived and developed by ED PARKER as a directional key to movement. This extensive pattern is a useful learning tool to enhance students' knowledge of motion. It is also a design that can aid you in systematically understanding the interrelationship of linear and circular movements and the paths in which they travel. Once understood it can be applied to self-defense techniques, forms, freestyle, etc. As you learn to correlate moves within the pattern, alternative moves become instinctive and spontaneous. You must not, however, get caught up in the manner of study, but the reasons involved within the study.

UNIVERSAL VICE - A seizing maneuver usually used on the limbs that stems from the execution of the UNIVERSAL BLOCK. Performed by hooking with one hand and applying pressure with the other forearm.

UNUSEFUL - Movements that may not be useful in one predicament, but can be in another. They may be unuseful in one combat situation, but positively effective in another.

UPPER CASE MOVEMENT - (1) This term refers to the fact that movements, like the letters of the alphabet, can have UPPER (CAPITAL LETTERS) and LOWER (small letters) CASES.(2) This concept also closely parallels the SQUEEGEE PRINCIPLE. For example, if you are blocking a high strike with the hammer portion of your fist, you are urged not to use the same part of your hand to block a second blow that may be aimed at the stomach. Instead, you are urged to use the lower part of your forearm, since it is closer to the line of action of the second blow, and affords greater ECONOMY OF MOTION. The employment of an UPPER CASE MOVEMENT followed by a LOWER CASE MOVEMENT would have your arm following a path of action as opposed to following a line of action, and would allow you greater MARGIN FOR ERROR. Also refer to MARGIN FOR ERROR, PATH, PATH OF ACTION, SQUEEGEE PRINCIPAL and LOWER CASE MOVEMENT.

USEFUL - Any logical or practical move that can be effectively used.

USELESS - This term is not the same as UNUSEFUL. These are moves that are not effective under any condition.

V

VARIABLE EXPANSION - The ability to randomly select solutions, or build upon precepts, as a result of having a thorough knowledge of the principles and concepts of the martial arts.

VENETIAN BLIND PRINCIPLE - Teaches how zones on the body can decrease or increase in size, like a venetian blind, when the angle of the body changes in height and width.

VERTICAL BUCKLE - A height control maneuver used against the leg(s) executed on a vertical plane, causing the weight bearing leg to collapse toward itself.

VERTICAL PLANE - Upright, straight up and down plane.

VERTICAL PROP - Any upright surface that may be used as a BRACE in a CONTROL MANIPULATION technique.

VERTICAL ZONES - One of the three categorical ZONES OF PROTECTION. It encompasses four vertical or width segments that need to be protected; (1) left outside shoulder to middle of left chest, (2) Middle of left chest to sternum, (3) Sternum to middle of right chest, (4) Middle of right chest to outside of right shoulder. This term is synonymous with WIDTH ZONES.

VITAL AREAS - The major weak points of the body.

VOCABULARY OF MOTION - Refers to having an extensive knowledge of Martial Art movements. Each individual move, whether it be offensive or defensive, is considered to be a letter in the ALPHABET OF MOTION. Combinations using the same arm or foot form WORDS OF MOTION. Combinations employing both hands and/or both feet are considered SENTENCES OF MOTION. Combined SENTENCES OF MOTION form PARAGRAPHS OF MOTION. These combinations create an almost infinite number of alternatives, and the more versed a martial artist is in those alternatives, the more fluent his response to any physical confrontation.

W

WASTED MOTION - Motion which has no appreciable effect or purpose.

WEAPON AVAILABILITY - The proper positioning of natural weapons for immediate use.

WEDGE VICE - A seizing action with one hand or the other in conjunction with pressure from the other forearm to trap for the purposes of CONTROL MANIPULATION.

WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION - The apportionment of weight related to a particular stance. It may vary, fifty-fifty, sixty-forty, ninety-ten, and so forth.

WHITE-DOT-FOCUS - In this concept of focus one visualizes a white dot on a black background representing unawareness. All styles and systems that primarily stress linear motion conform to this concept. Their concern is with the target, and with maximizing power--not protection.

WHOLE-BEAT TIMING - A secondary action performed WITH a primary motion whether complimentary or opposing, offensive or defensive, front or rear.

WIDE KNEEL VISE - A leveraged pressure pin or hold accomplished by placing the desired body part under the rear knee of the stance or, between the hamstring muscle of the rear leg and rear calf muscle creating a “VISE” like action controlled by your body weight and muscle flex.

WIDE/CLOSE KNEEL PIN - Usually used in conjunction with a CONTROL MANIPULATION technique to pin a subject to a surface, however it can be used singularly, utilizing the mechanics of the stance to PIN.

WIPE - Primarily a defensive tool against lesser manipulation arts that rely heavily on pain. Executed by utilizing a hand-sword or edge of hand against an attack to remove the offensive hand.

WITH - A very useful word in the advanced jujitsu vocabulary, which is reserved for the more adept. It involves dual movements and eliminates the word "and". One doesn't block "and" then strike. He blocks "with" a strike. Employing this principle eliminates wasted motion and economizes on time.

WORDS OF MOTION - Refers to a combination sequence of moves created by one arm or leg.

WORKING SEQUENCE - A technique sequence which is highly practical and applicable.

WRIST-FLEX - The forcing of an opponents wrist into a position that strains or tears the ligaments and muscles in the back of the hand and wrist area. When performed correctly under pressure the position resembles the SHAPE OF THE CRANE HAND.

WRIST-FLEX LOCK - The execution of a WRIST-FLEX for the purpose of locking the flex in place for CONTROL MANIPULATION.

WRIST-FLEX TAKEDOWN - Any WRIST-FLEX position used to CONTROL MANIPULATE an opponent forcibly to the ground.

WRIST-FLEX THROW - A WRIST-FLEX position forcefully manipulated to rapidly remove an opponent from his feet.

WRIST-FLEX TURNOVER - Utilizing a Wrist Flex to turn a subject over when prone. Usually used in conjunction with Compound Torque.

WRIST-FLEX, BRACED - Applies to all WRIST FLEX positions that may be braced utilizing the opponents body, your body, or an environmental object to assist in holding the FLEX in place.

WRIST-FLEX, INVERTED - A contortion of the arm resembling the traditional “goose neck,” however the hand is upside down with the fingers pointed back toward your opponent.

WRIST-FLEX, LATERAL - The forcing of an opponents wrist into a position that strains or tears tissue on the baby finger or thumb edge of the wrist bone area.

WRIST-FLEX, REVERSE - The opposite of the WRIST FLEX with tension applied to the inner wrist area, forcing the hand into what resembles a WAITERS HAND CHECK position, with sufficient force to cause a locking effect under tension.

Y

YAWARA – The ancient Japanese name for jujitsu. Yawara involves a specialization in escaping from various holds with minimal amounts of strength, force and power.

YIELD - To give way to your opponent's action. See RIDING.

Z

ZONAL POSITION - Applies to blocking concepts. Most blocks are executed in a particular manner, like in football, to control a pre-determined area or “zone.” That position does not vary significantly in a particular blocking sequence. A block should be utilized to control its assigned “zone” regardless of offensive response. Offensive responses should be passed from “defensive player to defensive player,” or block to block and “zone to Zone.” This gives you defensively a greater tolerance for error and increased reaction time.

ZONES OF DEFENSE - Same as ZONES OF PROTECTION.

ZONES OF PROTECTION - This involves shielding three main zones on your body -- height (or horizontal), width (or vertical) and depth. Also refer to OBSCURE ZONES, the OUTER RIM THEORY and the QUADRANT ZONE THEORY.

ZONES OF SANCTUARY - Dead areas of space where you can position yourself for protection. As an example, if we were to fit a circle within a square we would find the corners of the square untouched. These untouched areas are called ZONES OF SANCTUARY. They represent areas outside the range of a natural weapon where one can take refuge, and not be touched. If the circle represented the path of a swinging club, taking refuge in the properly selected corner would prevent you from being hit. This area of refuge is, therefore, a ZONE OF SANCTUARY.
