Running the Bulletin Board System for a few years I once in a while ran into someone with some intresting information, on one topic or another. I occassionally kept an eye on the people using my computer and watched as each one dialed in and out. About 3am one night in about 1995, I recieved a user, who was new, and dialing from somewhere long distance.
As the new user filled out his information sheet I noticed he left several blank spots, which started to make me wonder why he was doing this, perhaps someone who wanted to try and hack in, or someone who didnt want me to know who had called. Any case, I checked the caller ID, thats when I first knew they were from somewhere else.
The person continued to fill out the info sheet, and succesfully logged on to the BBS. Usually killing accounts with alot of blank spots on them, I figured since I was watching him I might as well question his actions, most the callers were kids, or teenagers, I figured it was someone screwing aruond. I broke into a chat session with him, where he was surprised to see me. I asked why he had left the info all annonymous. He said he was calling from out of town, and didnt want to be known. I asked why, he responded, I saw your system listed on a U.S. BBS list, and I had to call. I asked if he was interested in UFO's or Government Conspiracy, thats when he said. "Could I give you a call on the phone?" I was curious as to why he wanted to talk on the phone long distance rather than download the files he might have came for. But I agreed, after all he was paying the phone bill.
He logged off and about a minute or so later, the phone rang, I picked it up and he came on the line. The man sounded like he could have been in his late 20's maybe mid 30's. I asked what he wanted to talk about, thats when he told me, he had worked at Area 51. He seemed in a hurry, and quickly ran all his sentances together, not giving me much time for a response, other than, "did you see anything", before I could finish, "when you were there" he responded, "I worked as a night watchman, on the outer border, while I was there I saw the ocassional test air craft, people trying to come across the border, but that was the most activity I saw".
I asked you didnt see anything unusual? he replied "well yeah, they are doing testing out there, technology and weapons far beyond what you might believe we are capable of". Being a skeptic of course, I was sitting thinking, what could I ask to try and verify this person actually was an employee out there. Nothing came to mind. Im not one to not believe someone, I'll always take in to account that the stories I hear could be true, as well as the person could have percieved something the wrong way. So I wasnt about to tell him right off I didnt believe him. All this time he seemed pretty friendly, he told me he needed to go, and didnt feel safe being on the phone for too long. With that he hung up.
The call lasted about 3 minutes which wasnt to long. But for someone to call me up and spend a few bucks once to get on my computer and then again to talk long distance must have been about $6.00. Not a terrible amount but would you spend that just to pull someones leg? I was just a small 1 line bulletin board. I dont know, could have been a fake, could have been real. He didnt have any accents I could pick up on to tell where he was calling from, all I could hear was an air conditioner in the background, which led me to believe whoever he was, called from his home. I never heard from him again, he never called back into my BBS. I still wonder who that person really was.
