1931 An oil well drilled in Bahrain. Bahrain Petroleum, a subsidiary of SOCAL (Standard Oil of California), struck oil in May 1932.
1932 Abdul Aziz ibn Saud captured Abha and Jaizan. King Abdul Aziz proclaimed the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The League of Nations recognize Iraq as an independent nation.
1933 On May 29, 1933 'Abdullah al-Sulaiman, Finance Minister of Saudi Arabia, and Loyd Hamilton, SOCAL concession lease negotiator, signed an agreement authorizing SOCAL exploration rights to 360,000 square miles of land for sixty years. Four months later, Socal/Casoc (California Arabian Standard Oil Company) prospectors arrived at Port Jubail to examine the Dammam dome. In 1936 drilling began for Well No. 7 in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. In March 1938, oil started flowing and reached 3,372 barrels on March 21.
Muhammad Zahir Shah, King of Afghanistan [1933-1973, overthrown]; introduced a constitution on October 1, 1964; Overthrown in a coup on July 17, 1973 by his brother-in-law Sardar Mohammad Daud while he was under treatment in Italy. Muhammad Zai dynasty ends.
1934 King Abdul Aziz ibn Saud captured Najran.
Balkan Pact signed by Turkey, Greece, Yugoslavia and Romania.
First building in the U.S.A. designated as mosque in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Cedar Rapids also became home to the first designated, independently owned and registered Muslim cemetry in North America in 1948 (4.5 acres land donated by Haji William Yahya Aossey).
1936-39 The Soviets annexed the independent Republic of Kazakhstan and the independent Republic of Azerbaijan [1939]. The Russians controlled the Azerbaijan's oil reserves in Baku.
One by one all Muslim independent republics annexed, a large part of Muslim population exiled to Siberia and transported to other geographical areas. One Million Muslims were massacred in Caucasia (Kaukaz, Daghastan). [Russification of Central Asia].
1937 Saadabad Pact signed between Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan.
1938 Death of Mustafa Kamal Ataturk.
First mosque in Canada built in Edmonton; dedication ceremony by Abdullah Yusuf Ali, the famous translator of the meaning of the Qur'an into English. This mosque was declared as historic site in 1978.
1939 Mussolini invaded Albania and annexed it to Italy. Albania regained independence after Italy capitulated in 1943, declared People's Republic in 1946.
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad is elected President of Indian Congress. He retained the presidency throughout World War II years during which the demand for independent India intensified. Maulana Azad also held the same post in 1923. He later served as the First Minister of Education of independent India. India became independent in 1947.
1940 In the Soviet Union, fifty thousand ulema and religious leaders were eliminated by 1940. Fourteen thousand mosques were closed down by the Communists in Turkistan by 1941.
Muslim League's Lahore Resolution of 1940 demanded the creation of Pakistan. Pakistan was created in 1947 out of some of the predominantly Muslim areas of India, and included what are now Pakistan and Bangladesh.
1941 Russian and British forces invaded Iran, Reza Shah abdicated in favor of his son. Mohammad Reza Shah, Shah of Iran [1941-1979].
1944 Casoc name changed to Arabian American Oil Company (Aramco) in 1944. By 1948 Socal, Exxon, Texaco, and Mobil acquired interest in Aramco. Saudi Arab government acquired 25 percent of Aramco's interest in 1973, 60 percent in 1974, and 100 percent in the mid-1980. Aramco produced an average of 9.63 million barrels of crude oil per day in 1980.
1947 Partition of India and creation of Pakistan (East and West) on August 14, 1947. Pakistan was created out of some of the predominantly Muslim regions of India, and included what are now Pakistan and Bangladesh. States of Hyderabad and Kashmir, and numerous princely states were left with the choice to join either India or Pakistan, or remain as independent states. More Muslim civilians were killed in the first two months of partition than at any other time during the entire Muslim rule in India.
1947-48 India-Pakistan war over Kashmir. Kashmir had predominantly (75%) Muslim population under Hindu ruler. Israeli fighters raided Al Haram Al Sharif, Dome of the Rock and Al Aqsa, in Jerusalem on July 16, 1948.
1952-95 Major extensions of the Haram in Makkah during 1955-1976 and 1988-1995. Approximate area 1.6 million sq. ft. (37 acres), accommodated one-half million pilgrims for prayers in 1955; expanded to approximate area 3.8 million sq. ft. (88 acres) in 1995, accommodates more than two million pilgrims for prayers.
The extension of the Prophet's mosque in Madinah in 1952 and its largest extension during 1988-1995. Approximate area 380,000 sq. ft. (9 acres) of open plaza added during the reign of King Faisal; doubled this area during King Khalid's reign; further expanded ten times during the 1988-1995 expansion. Accommodates more than one million pilgrims for prayers.
