| Karnes / Kennedy, Texas |
It comes from the sky, and charges you from the ground. On my Way up to Dallas I stopped at the Karnes / Kennedy police department. This stop was because of two letters I received about the screaming demon from hell!
The Chief of Police, at that time was at first reluctant to give a recorded interview of the incident. Due to his position and reputation he explained what had happened off camera.
It was the night of Halloween in 1978, and he was called about a disturbance on the old Oil Well Road # 3. The only information he had was that four children were attacked by a creature, that came out of nowhere. He turned his patrol car onto the dirt road, and made a stop at Pete Hamptons house. The one that called in the incident.
The Chief looked at the large scratches across the necks, backs, and faces of the two oldest boys, of Pete, and got their Story. We were taking a short cut across Thelmans field and out of nowhere this white screaming creature scraped my back with its long fingers. Tim there took a stick and tried to hit it, but every time he swung at it, the stick would just go right through it. Its eyes were showing the fires of hell and its screaming, sounded like the cries of damned soles. We ran back home and it kept tearing at us, like it wanted to drags us into Hell.
Knowing that Pete was the local preacher and that he raised his boys to tell the truth, plus the evidence of the deep scratches was enough to warrant an investigation. Upon approaching his patrol car, his deputy pulled up next to him. He told the deputy to follow him down to the area where the incident happened. Arriving at the spot the Chief pulled out his 12 gauge pump shotgun and loaded it. The deputy asked what they were looking for, and the Chief responded, Something that can rip your body to shreds. The deputy reached into his patrol car and pulled out his 16 gauge pump shotgun and loaded it. Grabbing their large 6 cell flashlights they started across Thellmans field.
The Chief told his deputy to search the area to the left and to make sure of his target before shooting. He knew of many hunting accidents where the buddy got excited and shot his partner accidentally. Nearing a small pond area where the grass was high and the mesquite trees were tightly spaced the silence of the night air was broken by a high screeching scream. Both the Chief and Deputy froze in their steps and shined their lights all around them. The Deputy was the first to encounter the creature. The screams of the creature and his deputy cries for help mixed with the swinging of the deputys flashlight, as he used it to defend himself, gave flashes of white and red fiery eyes. The screams, sent chills down the Chiefs spine, as he headed to assist his deputy. Whatever that was, it was not Human.
Approaching his deputy, the creature disappeared into the darkness and the grip of the deputys hand on his flashlight loosens, and it is tossed several feet to the left of him. The back of the Deputies Jacket was shredded and small patches of blood was starting to show through the remaining material.
The Chief glanced around as the scream came again. Just outside the edge of his flashlight, glowing red eyes were looking at them. Handing the flashlight to the deputy and telling him to keep it shining there, he raised his shotgun and fired. Taking the State Marksmanship Title for three straight years, he knew that whatever it was, it was going to pay for what it did to his deputy. The shot echoed across the open field, and the impact of the pellets could be heard. However, the eyes were still there and did not move. Ejecting the spent shell and reloading a new into the chamber the Chief thought that he might of miscalculated the distance and shot to low.
Again the fire of his weapon broke the silence and the clicking of the pellets could be heard. He adjusted his eyes from the site and looked into the darkness. The sound of him reloading another shell, and the yes, from his deputy, confirmed that the eyes were no longer there. He started to turn as the scream filled the night again. The Chief brought the shotgun up again and fired at the massive white creature coming directly at him. Three more rounds were fired at it. But the ripping of the front of his coat and the pushing of his body to the ground, indicated that the shells had no effect.
The deputy flashed the light at the creature as it again passed over the fallen Chief. Grabbing the Deputies Shot gun, the Chief fired all five shells at the creature. The night became silent again. The deputy looks at the chief, I think you got it Chief? His Statement was shown inaccurate as it again hit the deputies back and then disappeared into the darkness.
The Chief, got up from the ground and grabbed his flashlight, and pulled his sidearm. His trusted 44 magnum has stopped drug dealers in their tracks, this thing must be stopped. A scream in the darkness gave the indication of where it was coming from. The fire ridden eyes, and flashes of white presented him a target. All five bullets were launched from his pistol at the ever closing creature. At the last possible moment the Chief dove for the ground and the hot burning feeling of fingernails crossing and digging into his head could be felt.
Again the creature disappeared into the night. Feeling the blood trickling down his face he told the deputy to get his flashlight, They were leaving and coming back into the morning daylight. The deputy picked up his flashlight and called for the Chief to look at something on the ground. The Chief walked over as he reloaded his pistol.
He shined his light to the object 0n the ground. It was Jed Thelmans Basset Hound, or what was left of the shredded body. The Chief replied, Nothing we can do now for the dog, Well call Jed when we get back to the office.
The Chief and the deputy went to the Hospital, and returned back to the office around 5 am. And nothing was said, about what had happened, to the other officers. At 8 am the entire Karnes / Kennedy police force converged on the location armed with shotguns, rifles, pistols, and riot gear.
The movements across the field was as if they were looking for a lost child, or a man hunt of an escaped prisoner. Arriving at the same location, from the night before, they could not find Jeds dog. The only thing found was the spent shells from the night before and the stains of blood where the Chief, deputy, and the dog were located were the only other physical evidence left.
After an extensive four hours of searching the entire area, there was no sign or evidence of the creature they had encountered the night before. The Chief even had the pond dredged, but nothing was found.
My curiosity was abounding as we talked. I asked the Chief, Did you ever find out what it was? The Chief took a deep sip of coffee, as he nodded his head yes. I asked if he would tell me. He vowed me to secrecy, that I never reveal what he found out. I agreed and he told me. At first I could not believe what he said. Even with the topics of my Show and what we have encountered, no one would ever believe me, and I know now why the Chief sworn me to secrecy.
