Being that I was an amateur rockhound I jumped at an opportunity to travel into the rock mountain areas on a gold seeking venture. Bill Colliure, a fighter Pilot, had purchased a large parcel of land and somewhere there was an old gold mine on it. Since Nam I have know Bill as a very cool minded and cost conscious person. For him, this kind of purchase was very unusual. I really did not know why he asked me to go along at first, but before the evening was over I would know.

I had accumulated over 120 days of leave time, so I had gotten approval for 24 days of leave. Figured it would take 3 days to get there. 14 days looking for the mine and getting samples, and 3 days back, still allowed for 4 days if we needed it.

I had already put in my 12 hours of driving and gotten an additional 8 hours of sleep when I was awaken by the car coming to an abrupt stop. The tires sliding on lose gravel along with Bills, “ Oh Shit! “ Comment I figured we were about to hit something. I opened my eyes to see a moose just clearing the edge of the car. I glanced over at Bill, who’s face was as white as a sheet. I asked if he was alright, then if he wanted me to drive? He nodded yes to being alright then no for my driving. We sat there for a few more seconds before he released the brake pedal from the floor.

As I readjusted myself I glanced out the drivers window and then realized why he was so shaken. We were on the edge of a rode, in which the driver side had a shear drop of over 300 feet to a small stream below. The road had more twists in it then a sidewinder snake. We later found out that the road was called the sidewinder. We both gave a sigh of relief as we pulled into his property and seen a medium size cabin sitting in a clearing. Will actually be sleeping under a rainproof roof that night. He parked the car near the door and as he unlocked the padlock on the door, we decided to unpack the tents. A large section of the roof was gone and the floors were rotted away. The fireplace had collapsed on one side, and some of the black and white furry creatures had decided to make this their home.

As we turned to go out to the car we were meet by Thomas Big Cloud. He was sort of the property lands keeper. Holding his rifle at his side he asked who we were, and as Bill explained I glanced out to see several other people standing near the car. Without looking away from Bill he commented that they were with him, and were just checking out the tenderfoots stuff. After telling him the readers digest version of him buying the land Thomas eased his stance and we all walked out smiling and happy. Thomas looked at both of us and then asked why we were at this place when the main house was only four hundred yards down the old dirt road. Thomas and his family rode down the road on horse back as we followed. I glanced back at the old cabin and then pondered on who lived there and what it looked like many years ago. The main house was a three level four bedroom house with a sunken living room and every convenience

Thomas and his family helped us unload the car and started to make supper from the fresh deer meat they had gotten earlier that day. To our surprise and liking the old land owners had an agreement between Tom and his family. They had their own home just beyond the tree line, and if they took care of the land, they could live there without any costs. Bill and Tom agreed to continue the arrangement. As we were eating a terrific supper, Thomas asked if we were going to waste our time looking for the old gold mine.
Bill shook his head yes. Thomas, youngest son looked up and laughed and then stated, “Tenderfoot.”

Thia, Thomas’s Wife, also laughed then tapped the top of the boys head, and then told us if we were going to look, to stay away from Leoacha Mountain. Before I could ask, Thomas stated, “ Leoacha means Hell! “ he then looks at his wife, “and that is an old woman’s tale. “ Bill looked at Thomas and blurted out, “ That is why I asked my friend to join me in the hunt.” I guess the dumb founded look on my face gave the hint that someone should tell me what is going on. Thomas pushed his plate away then sat back in his chair, “ At night the mountain has circles of lights around it, and it thunders with flashes of light when there is no storm.

I Leaned back in my chair, “ Could be heat lightning? “ Thia picks up her plate and takes it to the sink, “ The animals that go up there come down with the look of the devil in their eyes.” Thomas continues, “ It is a legend that the evil one took many of our tribe to the mountain with the promises of strength and wealth beyond their beliefs.” Thia adds to the conversation “ The cries of their lost souls can be heard screaming after each of the devils whip hits them. “ Bill looks at them, “ My friend investigates things like this. “ Thia walks over and looks directly into my eyes, then speaks, “ I see the powers in you, and you have nothing to fear, you seek only the truth.” I looked away from her and ask, “ How many people have been looking for the old mine on Hell Mountain? “

Thomas’s oldest son looks at me, “ Those that have gone there have never came back, and I know where the mine is. “ Everyone, looks over at him and all together, in one voice ask, “ Where?” He looked at everyone, then calmly replied, “ The entrance is under the floor of the old Miners Cabin. “ I started laughing out loud. Bill looks at me and asked what I thought was so funny. I looked at everyone, “ Makes sense to me, get up and go to work, and no one would know where the mine is because they could never follow you to the mine, nor jump the claim.” Thomas looked at his son and asks him, “ How long have you known and why did you not tell us? “

“Two reasons Dad, One you told us that you did not want to hear about it, and the other is that it is guarded by the dead guy! “ Bill slaps his hand on the table, “ Great, in the morning you can show us where it is at, and everyone can share in the money. “ I looked at Bill, “ You know Bill, the boys have school tomorrow? “ Thomas looks at Bill, “ When he comes home from school we will go and see the mine. “ As Bill nodded his head, the sound of a clasp of thunder can be heard. We all got up from the table and I and Bill followed them outside.

Thomas pointed to one of the taller mountains, “ That is hell mountain! “ We watched as small circles of lights moved around, over and up and down the top part of the mountain.

Flashes of white and blue lights would fill the air and then ten seconds later a thunderous rumble could be heard. I looked at Thomas, “ The mountain is about two miles from here? “ He turned to me, “ You have a good eye, Yes the mountain is two miles from here.” Bill looks at me and comments, “ Luck Guess! “ I glanced at him and the look of , How did he know that?, on the faces of Thomas‘s children caused me to explain.
“From the time you see the flash until you hear the sound, you count the seconds, then divide that number by five. It will give you an idea of the distance. “ I looked at Bill, “ Not lucky, just scientific fact of the speed of sound.“ Bill nodded his head while saying , “ I knew that! “ then walked back into the house. Walking back into the house I continued to the youngest boy, “ If you want to know how far a storm is from you, you can use that. “ The youngest walks in behind me, “ Only if you know how to divide? “ We all laughed as we sat down in the living room.

I looked at Thomas and asked, “ How far is the nearest airport from here? “ He leaned his head back then commented, “About ten miles why?” I leaned back, “ Do they have helicopters there? “ Thomas replys, “ I think so, are you planning to go to the mountain top?” Before I could answer he continues, “ If you are, then I will go with you. “ Thia jumps into the conversation, “ Like Hell you will!, If he wants to see the devil then let him go, you have children and a family to take care of first. “ Thomas’s face went stern as he looked at her, “ I am going woman, I must see what my father seen! “ Thia threw her apron on the coffee table, “Then you will end up like your father.” She then went out of the house. Thomas signaled for the boys to go home, then he turned to me, “ In the morning we will go to the airport, and we will both face the devil. “ Thomas then left the house.

Bill looked at me, “ Now look at what you did. “ I guess my face indicated my feelings, since Bill then walked off into one of the bedrooms. I walked back outside and watched the mountain for a couple more hours. I glanced down at my watch and seen that it was well after midnight before the flashing lights disappeared. The sky began to get overcast and a gentle rain began to fall. At this point I was happy that I had a nice warm bed and roof over my head.

The smell of bacon and coffee brewing filled my bedroom. I arose slowly and got dressed. Walking out of the bedroom, I was confronted by a young woman carrying a frying pan full of bacon and fried eggs. A quick smile crossed her face as she stepped sideways and walked over to the table. I scratched my head and walked over to the table. Sitting down I commented, “ Good morning, and thank you for making breakfast. “
She plopped two eggs on my plate and about ten slices of bacon while talking, “ My brother told me that you two were here, and asked me to show up and make you breakfast. “

She moved to a second plate and started to do the same, “Are you the one that my brother is going with?” I pushed a piece of bacon and egg into my mouth ad nodded yes. She moved the plate closer to me and slid a chair over, “ Can I go with you? “ before I could respond she continued, “ Thomas said that this is a man thing and a woman needs to be at home.” Swallowing coffee, she kept talking, “ I really want to see what is up there, and are you married?”

Bill walked out of the room wearing only his underwear. He stopped, looked at the girl and me, then at his dress, turned and disappeared back into his bedroom. She shrugged her shoulders, then kept talking, “ If you were to marry, how many chidden do you want to have, and how much money do you make? “

Bill again emerged from the room and walked over and poured himself a cup of coffee, then walked over to the table. She indicated for him to get his own eggs and bacon. I looked at Bill, and stated, “ Bill this young lady here is more your type. “ She looked at me, I told her, “ He is a fighter pilot and makes more then I do. “ Within a heart beat she was serving him and her attention was now focused on him totally.

Finishing breakfast and seeing Bill squirm as he direct questions of marriage made him twinge, I got up and walked outside. The sky was clear now and unlimited visibility. As I looked at the mountain Thomas rode up on horse back with another horse in tow. I asked him why the horse and he explained that it is only a half mile by horse back and ten miles by car. The saddles were fully equipped including saddle bags, and rifles. He asked if I knew how to fly a helicopter, and I nodded my head as I read the large round thermometer hanging outside of the house. 38 degrees, somehow it did not seem that cold. Thomas responded, “ If we are to go and come back we should leave shortly, did my sister come over and make you breakfast? “ I thanked him for asking her to do that, then told him I would be right back.

Bill was involved in eating and avoiding her particular marriage questions, and did not notice me grabbing my flight coat, and to 5 lb. Sacks of flour. Closing the door, I walked over and placed the flour in the saddle bags, then went back onto the porch and grabbed the thermometer off the wall. Thomas was laughing, as I climbed into the saddle. “ It seems that my sister finds your friend as a possible mate. “ We shook our heads as we rode off. We talked while riding and I was glad that he suggested the horses. The scenery was breath taking.

Thomas told me of the old mine mystery. It was told that one of the partners went into town to get supplies, and turn in the gold to a bank. While in town he was shot and the gold was never deposited. The other Partner had vanished and no one ever heard from them. Some say that the two partners had a quarral and the other killed the one with the gold. It also had been said that anyone who found the mine would be cursed and die a horrible death. There were a few that had brought gold into town, but ended up dead the next morning. This was turning out to be a two part mystery. UFO’s and Ghosts.
