AX MURDER HOLLOW
Robert D. Kilgallon Author
Copyrights 2000
It was the eve of Halloween in 1966 and four, of the Boys Club of Erie, teen leaders were planning their evening festivity. George the oldest of the group wanted to take their dates out for Pizza and then to a party. The next oldest was Bob, who also had the nick name of Killer, brought up the idea of taking their dates out to a haunted house, before the party. Eddie was not sure the haunted house idea was a good one, but decided to leave it up to a vote. Chu Lang, better known as Chewy suggested a pizza, the house, and then the party.
Everyone was in agreement as to the order of events, However, the question of which haunted house to go to. The one sponsored by the club, YMCA, or the City of Erie? While tying his shoes on the bench Bob suggested Ax Murder Hollow. Almost turning a pale shade of white Eddie stated that he did not want to go. George and Chewy started to cluck like a chicken as they packed their gym bags.
Eddie looked up from his bag, Look, Im not scared but my brothers told me that someone was killed out there. George and Chewy looked at Killer. He zippered his gym bag closed, There were five people that died out there, Eddie. Chewy glanced around and asked where the place was at? George grabbed his car keys, and turned to Chewy Somewhere out in Girard, Pa. He shoved his keys into his jacket pocket, We can use my station wagon tonight. Turns to Bob You know how to get out there Killer? Bob nodded his head, and started out the locker room.
It was then agreed that their dates were to be contacted and arrangements to be picked up, starting at 5 that evening, and returning after the party. Dropping all but Bob off at their houses George turned and asked why he suggested Ax Murder Hollow? The high school senior glanced over to his life long friend and stated, Well George, they were talking about the house yesterday at school and they said that not many people had the guts to go there. I figured if we cant do it no one can, plus we can really scare the girls.
Chewy ran up to his girl friend house and as he and Lea walked down to Georges car the familiar faces of Louise and George in the front seat, Bob and Kathy, Eddie and Sue Ann in the second seat, caused Lea to mumble, Great we get the rumble seat to ourselves again. Bob looked at her and suggested that he and Kathy can take the back seat. Lea nodded her head and their places were changed. Lea looked at chewy and stated, Now you will have to behave, She glanced back at Bob, Thanks Killer, and Kathy watch the curves.
Louise moved closer to George, So, where are we going? George put the car into gear and the wagon moved away. George glanced into the rear view mirror, First we are going to State Street Pizzeria, and then Killer will explain the rest.
As Tony brought the first of the three large pizzas to the table, and the two pitchers of soda. Bob slid into the end corner of the booth bench set, with Kathy following, then Louise and George. Across from them was Eddie, Sue Ann, Lea, and Chewy. Bob reached into his wallet and picked out a ten dollar bill and tossed it on the table, followed by Eddie, Chewy and George.
They all nodded and Louise stated, That takes care of the pizza and soft drinks, Now Killer where are we going tonight?
Bob shoved his wallet back into his pocket, and while looking at each girl he explains, Well Louise, Kathy, Lea, and Sue Ann we are going to feed our faces, then going out to Ax Murder Hollow. Tony placed the pizza down on the table and commented, You are not really going out there are you? George looked at him, Whats the problem Tony? Tony picked up the money from the table, My Nephew Antonio went out there with two of his buddies, and they ended up in the hospital. One of them almost died. Lea gasped, What happened to them? Tony made change at the table, and looked at the group, Dont really know, they wont tell me, and I dont want to lose my best customers, so dont go out there.
Eddie looked at everyone and laughed, Well at least Sue and I have a natural camouflage out there. George smiled, Just as long as you dont smile, Eddie!
The group laughed with Eddie and Sue. Kathy grabbed Bobs arm, Killer, what is the story of Ax Murder Hollow?
Bob Took a quick swallow of his piece of pizza followed by a gulp of Soda. As far as I know there was a family of five living there. A husband, wife, and three children, ages 5 years, 3 years, and 18 months old. They were having financial problems and on this day something happened that caused the mother to lose it.
Tony slid the second pizza onto the table, and another pitcher of soda. Bob nodded his head to Tony, and continued For some reason she went outside to the chopping stump and pulled the doubled edge ax out from the chopping block and came back into the house with it. Everyone had their attention on Bob as they gulped down their pizza and sodas. The two oldest children were sitting at the kitchen table and were the first to get it. Lea queried, Get what Killer?
Chewy Shrugged his shoulder and turned to her, Eat your pizza Lea. Barely holding his smile, Bob continued The mother slammed the ax into the oldest boys head. She then kicked the lifeless body away from her and planted the deadly blade into the next childs head. The crack of the head bone and spurting blood all over the kitchen. Bob grabbed his soda and took a swallow and noticed that others in the pizza shop were paying attention also.
Placing the glass down he continued, They dont know if the youngest child was crying or not, but the mother then went up the stairs dragging the bloody ax behind her. Within a few seconds the last child had its body split in half with the deadly blade. The crashing of the crib and its tiny bones, from the force of the ax, echoed throughout the house.
Sue wiped the edge of her mouth and swallowed her soda. Bob took another bite and chewed rapidly as the others waited for the story to continue. They said that she waited at the living room bay window to see her husband drive up the road. She sat there with the ax pressed against her cheek, and the blood running down her blouse. Her husband was late that evening, but he had good news for the family. His boss gave him a promotion and a pay raise and soon all their problems would no longer exist.
Bob lowered his voice a bit, to see what the other people listening, would do. He pulled his car onto the side of the house, near the wood chopping area, but did not notice that the ax was gone. According to the police he walked into the kitchen, and was stunned and dazed with the site of his children bloody and dismembered bodies. George looked around as the people drew closer to their booth. Bob took another sip of his soda, The thought of his wife and child clouded his judgment as he entered into the dining room. Standing on the side of the doorway, with ax held high she swung it down into the right side of his neck. His head tilted to the side as his body fell to the floor. She pulled out the blade as his body turned over. His eyes looked at her as she swung downward and the blade splitting his head apart.
Bob Grabbed his pizza and took a big bite of it. The silence was annoying as one of the patrons asked, And then what happened? Bob glanced around at everyone, and swallowed. She must of seen the card sticking out his coat pocket with the notice of his promotion and pay raise. She looked around at what she had done, and the reality of her actions caused her to pick up the ax and use it on herself.
Finishing off the remaining soda in his glass he ended the story, The police arrived the next afternoon and found her and the children all lumped together in the living room, with a note of her story and the ax still planted into her head. They said that if you go there you can hear the cries of the victims and the wife, and if you get into her way you to can feel her insanity, and the blade of the ax.
Kathy, moved closer to bob and looked into his eyes, Killer, do we really have to go out there? Eating more of his pizza, and pouring another glass of soda he nodded his head. George looked at the other girls, and commented, Why dont we go out there when the girls are not with us, you know, just in case? From the other side of the room Mike got up from his chair and walked towards the group.
Mike stood at the edge of the table as George finished his suggestion and stated, Whats the problem George, Porgy dont have the guts to go there? Bob looked at him, Mike Rendazzo, what rock did you crawl out from? Mike looked at Bob, I have no problems with you Killer, I think old George here is spineless. Louise started to get up, and George grabbed her arm, Have you been there Ratzo? Mike moved back from the table. Yea, me and the gang went out there
Eddie looked at him, Ratzo, why dont you just leave before you contaminate the food and air around us. Mike looked at the girls, When you women want a real man just give me a call. Lea responded with, Hog calling, got it, now beat it.
Mike turned and walked out of the store. The group finished off the rest of the pizza and soda. Kathy signaled to the other girls and they left together to go the restroom. Tony walked over and picked up the dirty dishes and glasses, George thanked Tony for adding to the scare of the story, However, it was Tonys reply that struck home, I was not kidding, I really do not want you to go out there. To many bad things happen out there.
Upon their return the girls informed them that they were going out there just to show Ratzo off. Waving good by to Tony they left the store and Eddie and Sue Ann traded places with Bob and Kathy. After stopping off for gas, the 20 minuet drive to the Hallow Run Road was done in almost complete silence. Bob indicated the, over grown, 150 foot driveway to the house. George pulled the wagon off to the side of the road. Getting out of the car, He and Bob walked to the edge of the driveway. Looking at the brush and tall grass they decided that the condition of the driveway would not warrant driving the car up to the house. They walked back to the car, and talked it over with everyone. Within a few moments the entire group was out of the car, and the doors were locked. Anticipating the evening events the guys had grabbed several flashlights and each of them had their own. Like fireflies in a row they entered into the tall grass, with Bob taking the lead, Then Kathy, Louise, George, Eddie, Sue Ann, Lea and Chew on the back end.
As they grew nearer the house a fog began to appear around them and the group became closer. Within 20 feet of the house the grass was cut and a slight damp, cool breeze whisked across their faces. This was not the first time for Bob and George to explore the unknown. However, the others did not have such past experiences. They got near the side of the house and noticed that an ax was buried in the chopping block outside. Pointing this out, the girls took a deep breath. Bob walked over and looked at it. The edges of the blade were stained red, and he realized this might not be the best time to point this out to the rest.
Standing on the side porch they could see down the small path they made and Georges Wagon waiting for them below. George walked over towards the front of the house and noticed that another path was made leading from another part of the road. Someone had been there, and might still be there. His first thought was that of Ratzo. He pointed the other path to the group and gave them his feelings.
Bob opened the front door and was the first to walk into the house. Shining the light around the room he moved cautiously and quietly. Going up stairs the group searched the 3 rooms and full bathroom. The floor creaked with each footstep. The last room to be checked was that of the nursery. On the floor a deep dark red stain covered half of the rooms wooden floor. Looking out a cracked window pain Bob peered into the outside fog as he thought he had seen headlights go out in the driveway near the road. Turning he lead the group down the squeaking and straining wooden stairs. The cool dampness of the house mixed with the occasional breeze would cause goose pimples to appear on their arms.
Walking through the living room, while searching any closets, they entered the Dining room. The familiar darkened red stain on the floor showed the final slaughter of her family. Going into the kitchen the massive stains on the floor, appliances and walls, caused Lea and Sue to turn and walk back into the dining room. Eddie went with them. Bob walked to the side door and found it to be locked from the inside. The mold of the house was becoming evident and the fog outside was getting thicker. Bob glanced out the kitchen window, then opened the back door quickly and pushed open the wooden screened door.
The ax was no longer in the chopping block. George walked out to him and asked, Whats wrong? Bob turned to him, The ax is gone! We need to go now! George walked back in quickly followed by Bob. The screen door slammed against the wooden frame, as they entered into the dining room.
The sound of the door slamming shut is followed by the voice of a young boy asking, Whats wrong Mommy, are you mad at me? A swift breeze hits the back of Bobs neck and sound of meat cleaver hitting and slicing a head of lettuce, mixed with bones shattering is followed by the sound of arms and legs shaking violently, then collapsing. The scream of another child mixed with a chair being pushed away and a body hitting the floor. The childs scream are ended with another stiff cold breeze and sound of bones being crushed and cracked, and a body collapsing to the floor shaking.
Bob shined his flashlight to the kitchen floor and the deep red color seemed now to be liquid in form. As he started to look back at the group, something pushed him out of the way. A cold clammy feeling entered over his body. His first instinct for survival was to get out of the house, as he regained his balance and shined his light at the back door. It was closed and locked. He shined his flashlight through the living room at the front door, and it was shut closed.
He moved towards the front door and the living room as the thumping of a metal object on each of the stairs was heard. Moving into the living room the group gathered closer together. Kathy asked, What is going on Bob? Bo grabbed the door handle and twisted it, but it was locked solid and would not open, Turning to the group he explains, We are living the slaughter of the family. George looked around and stated, It has to be Ratzo doing this. He left before us and set this whole thing up! Bob looked at George and whispered, George, Ratzo did not push me in the dining room.
The crying of a baby could be faintly heard, but was ended with the sound of bones and wood being shattered into pieces. At this point Kathy and the other girls were now wanting out of there. Bob looked at them and stated strongly that they had no choice but to stay put until it is all over. Remember that no violence took place in the living room he had the group form a small circle with the girls inside. As the sound of the ax being dragged down the stairs Eddie shown his flashlight on the stairs. Small pools of blood seemed to appear on a few of the stairs.
Eddie felt a cold clammy breeze as she went over to the bay window and sat down on the window seat. At first the single dripping sound is heard, but then a soft feminine voice started to sing The its bitsy spider ran up the water spout. We looked at each other as the song was sung over and over and each time it got a bit louder. George was the first to hear the sound of a car motor coming up the drive. The song ended and Lea and chew were pushed aside, and they also felt the cold clammy breeze. Bob looked at the group and stated, The husband is home.
The sound of the side door opening is followed by the horrified screams of terror from him, to the anguished calls to his wife. The group concentrated their flashlights on the dining room area near the kitchen. Hoping that the ghostly being would see his wife and stop the scenario from happening. His cries of hope filled the living room, then the sound of the ax hitting his neck, and his body falling to the floor. Our lights instinctively went to area he would be at. The red stain again appeared to be a liquid. A final gasp of air and, Why my Love? was his last words as the sound of the ax cracking his skull, echoed into the room..
Bob flashed his light down to the floor around them and realized that they were standing in the spot where the bodies were piled, and she took her own life. He signaled for everyone to move against the outer walls of the room. As they slowly moved apart they could hear her starting to cry, and the crumbling of paper and it hitting the floor. The sound of the ax being removed was heard, and then a car door opening and closing. Within a second or so, she screamed and the crushing of bone, the crashing of a body to the floor, and the blade of the ax digging into the floor.
Bob indicated that no one move. He whispers to them. Something is wrong, she killed herself, so how did the bodies get piled into the living room and the note? Kathy responded with, Who cares, lets get out of here. The side door opened and a womans voice calling for her sister, then her screams of horror.
As quickly as it started it was over. The front door of the house opened slowly and with a soft squeak. George started to get everyone out of the house onto the front porch. Bob walked into the dining room, and Kitchen. Looking out the now opened back door he could see that the ax was now back in the chopping block. He slowly closed the screen door and locked it tight. Pushing the back door closed he set the turn lock and walked back into the dining room. For a quick second he thought he heard a soft female voice thanking him. His thought of a quick prayer, was interrupted by George calling for him to get out of there.
Closing the front door they all walked down to the car in silence. Upon reaching the wagon a Pennsylvania State Trooper car pulled in front of the wagon. The officer got out of his car and asked what they were doing. They explained the events of the night. The officer looked at them and asked who car was parked there, proof of ownership, insurance and drivers license. George gave him his drivers license and then retrieved the rest of the information from his glove box.
As the officer returned the information back to George, Bob asked if the officer knew the final episode of the slaughter. The trooper looked at him and stated to continue. Bob told him that her sister or sister in law found them dead in the house, and she was the one that wrote the suicide note and piled the bodies in the living room. The officer took out his note book and wrote down the information, and asked how he knew this information. Bob smiled, She told us that tonight.
The trooper shook his head and closed the note book and stated, You are lucky, there was a kid out here about an hour ago, got hurt bad. According to the doctor it looks like someone hit him with a sharp object. George spoke up with, Like a double bladed ax? The officer looked at him, Could be. Bob asked if the kid was Mike, and the officer asked how we knew his name. Bob responded with Lucky guess.
He then told them to leave the area and not come back. It was about two months later when Bob meet the State Trooper shopping with his wife. He explained that they talked with the victims sister and in fact it was her that wrote the suicide note and ( Email me for Ending ) |
