Mark Henry dropping weight
By Patrick Michael:
Mark Henry has been losing weight in the last few weeks
as officials in the company have begun to ride him until he
dropped the extra weight. The footage last week on Raw that
was aired was a joke about the situation as his weight increased
during time off earlier this year when he had both knee's scoped.
His weight had always been a sore point for some as it has
fluctuated at different points in his short career. He received a
major push at the end of 1998 when he was given a program with
Chyna. The program lasted about two months and ended in one
of the most controversial moments in World Wrestling Federation
history.
He currently has been pulled from active competition and his tag
partner D-Lo Brown has begun a strong mid-card push as evident
from his Intercontinental title win in Columbus, Ohio on July 27th,
which was aired for the August 2nd edition of Raw.
Henry had been requested to lose around 60 pounds and he has
dropped fifteen since being asked. He at his heaviest point was over
400 pounds and many want him to get down around the 330 mark.
Ric Flair returns Monday
By Patrick Michael:
Ric Flair will be returning to Monday Nitro this week after having
accompanied his son Reid to Japan for a international amateur wrestling
tournament. His son did very well and made it into the finals for his
bracket. He won his two preliminary matches but lost to his opponent
during the finals. Ric Flair was reported by Dave Meltzer to be very
animated and supportive of his son.
Flair is supposed to be making a appearance during this Monday
Nitro as the show will air live out of Boise, Idaho. Dave Scherer reports
that rumors circulating around the company have him working a match
with Shane Douglas for the first time since he started with the company.
Shane Douglas has been doing worked shoots since he started as
they have been playing off the public heat that the two had for one
another. Backstage though during the Rockford, IL show three weeks
ago, Shane Douglas had approached him to shake his hand and
apologize for the problems in the past. Many were not surprised that
Flair accepted his apology because he is not known to carry a
grudge with many others and is seen by some as too easy going.
ECW gets article in EW
By Patrick Michael:
Extreme Championship Wrestling has received large scale publicity for
their upcoming one hour program on The Nashville Network that begins
on Friday night August 27th at 8PM. It was expected that the two Fridays
prior would be devoted to explaining the history and current storylines
of the company but the idea has now been dropped.
The latest mainstream publication to cover the company was the
magazine Entertainment Weekly that featured a one page article on the
company and had comments from TNN officials and Eric Bischoff also
had comments on the company. The story largely focused on the more
violent content and showed a picture from the Heatwave pay per view of
D-Von Dudley powerbombing a bloody Spike Dudley through a flaming
table.
Eric Bischoff said that TNN officials must control the content that they
will allow to be aired. That if the violence, swearing, and blood go out of
control, then it would have negative effects across the entire wrestling
world. TNN officials were quoted as saying that Paul Heyman and other
ECW officials have strict guidelines on what can be shown. That the
biggest concerns were over swearing violence against women.
Stevie Richards to sign with WWF
By Patrick Michael: Independent star Stevie Richards is very close if not having
already signed with the World Wrestling Federation. The former
Extreme Championship Wrestling workers has been working with
the NWA for the last year and a half as many questioned his health
after several major neck surgeries in late 1997.
He has received final medical clearance from doctors and the WWF
was satisfied with the progress that he had made. The company has
wanted to bring him in but wanted him to be a wrestler rather than a
manager. The neck injuries that he suffered in 1997 have kept the
company from signing him however.
Stevie Richards popularized the stooge gimmick in ECW as a
follower of Raven. Coming to ringside with strange clothing, feuding
with women, dressing in the likeness of Kiss, and the formation of
the Blue World Order at the November to Remember 1996 with the
Blue Meanie and Super Novak gave him a avid following.
Shortly following his pay per view premiere during the April 13th
Barely Legal telecast, he broke his neck during television tapings in
Buffalo, New York. In a dream partner tag match with Raven against
Terry Funk and Tommy Dreamer, Funk dropped a piece of guardrail
that landed on the top of his head. After being taken out on a stretcher
and being taken to a local hospital, Richards took a leave from ECW
but ended up weeks later with Raven in World Championship
Wrestling. He returned to the ring during WCWs final Clash of the
Championship telecast but was released soon after for failing a
physical.
His then announced retirement and subsequent return to ECW during
the November to Remember 1997 telecast stunned fans. But after one
match at the ECW Arena the week following, Richards soon left again.
Since then, he underwent several serious neck surgeries that left him
without a voice and in hellish pain. He routinely wrote open letters to
fans about the latest on his condition.
Wrestlemania 2000 to hit Gameboy
By Patrick Michael:
THQ unveiled its latest wrestling game to Game Informer. The game
Wrestlemania 2000 is set for release in the United States during the 4th
quarter of the year, just in time for the critical Christmas season. The
company secured the rights earlier this year from Acclaim, who has just
released their final game for the game, titled Attitude.
Gameinformer.com has pictures of the Wrestlemania 2000 game for
the Gameboy. The game will feature 15 wrestlers and includes such
features as championship, tag team, survival and cage matches.
Lex Luger readying to return
By Patrick Michael:
Bob Ryder reports that Lex Luger has been working out and
is readying for a return to television with World Championship
Wrestling. He was forced to sit take time off from WCW since
February due to tearing his bicep during a house show match
with Konnan before the Superbrawl pay per view. Despite the
injury, he worked the match but was very limited and Kevin
Nash worked the majority for him.
Luger had made appearances on WCW television early in the
spring to help the Sting/Rick Steiner feud. He was aburtply
dropped though when the programmed ended at the Great
American Bash pay per view.
Konnan received heat as Luger blamed him for not working
well and that his laziness in the ring was the cause for the
injury. Luger had been proud until that point of never having
to leave any wrestling company for a extended period of time
due to a injury.
Some ECW wrestlers test waters
By Patrick Michael:
Paul Heyman and other officials in Extreme Championship Wrestling
have begun to put many of the wrestlers under pressure to sign deals
with the company. Many workers in the company work for ECW as
independent contractors. The reason being that ECW would not have
to pay for medical insurance and wrestlers would not have to seek
approval before working other independent dates.
TNN has told ECW to get their workers under contract before the show
begins in late August. Some wrestlers have been contacting the World
Wrestling Federation and World Championship Wrestling about possibly
signing with them. Rumors have been circulating that both the WWF and
WCW are interested in signing some workers before the company starts
its national television clearance.
Dudleys with WWF thru August
By Patrick Michael:
The Dudley Boys will be staying with Extreme Championship
Wrestling through the month of August. They have agreed to
verbal terms with the World Wrestling Federation but have given
notice that they will stay with the company. Their last appearance
is scheduled to be during TNN tapings at the final Elks Lodge
New York City show on Thursday night August 26th reports
Dave Scherer.
