My interpretation of Black Balloon is kinda the same as Lisa's. Please pardon me if my quotes are not exact. I think that the song is about a girl Johnny might have known who has a drug problem. Heroin addicts use a black rubber band like a piece of a black balloon to wrap around their arm and Johnny says "Baby's black balloon makes her fly" so the drugs along with the use of the black balloon around her arm make her "fly". Also, johnny says that he saw the world spin beneath her and "scatter like ice from the spoon that was your womb" Maybe the "ice on the spoon" is the drug that she heats up on a spoon and then injects (which is also what heroin addicts do to get high). Also, her drugs that were on the spoon are her "womb" because she uses the drugs to find safety and reclusion from the harsh world. Ultimately, the girl that he is singing about has probably died "I go on as you get colder or are you someones prayer?" The song is soooo deep and Johnny is such a gifted poet and singer. You can hear the story thru his melodic, expressively rough, and
haunting voice. He is truly a genius and deserves all the praise in the world. This is just one girls opinion and interpretation of one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded "Black Balloon" By the greatest band in the world The Goo Goo Dolls. Sincerely, June
*Thanks so much, June! I'm glad someone else loves "Black Balloon" just as much as I do! And I totally agree that John's a genious!* |
