August 27th, 1999 was the best day of my life! It was the day of my very first Goo concert and I was totally excited!

I got there just about half way through Sugar Ray. I pushed my way up to the railing...the closest you can get for lawn seats at Great Woods. I waited patiently through Sugar Ray and the half an hour it took to set up for the Goo Goo Dolls. I had to put up with the horrible radio music they
were playing. Oh well. But at the end of the show, it was soo worth it!

All of a sudden, the lights go off and the crowd screams and whistles and cheers! A strobe light starts to flicker. There’s a loud noise, I’m guessing it was an electric guitar, but it wasn’t playing music. Just kind of a squeal (for lack of better words). Then, drums start playing and Robby and Johnny run out from the sides of the stage and start playing “Dizzy”. The crowd is going absolutely nuts! As soon as “Dizzy” ended, they went right into “Long Way Down”, followed by “Lazy Eye”, which I started freaking out when they started playing!

After “Lazy Eye”, they stop playing and Johnny says, “What day is it?” and the crowd replies with a “Friday!!!” “Friday? I don’t give a s**t what day it is, I just know I’m in Boston!” And, yet again, the crowd bursts into shouts and hollers. I can’t believe I was part of that crowd!! But the
guys go on playing songs and by the time they are in the middle of “Black Balloon”, I’m crying, for a number of reasons; 1) “BB” is my favorite song and 2) I WAS AT THE CONCERT!!!!!! I was there! In the same state, city, amphitheater as my favorite band! I was breathing the same air as them! (But of course, not the same as the people behind me...They had a little something illegal in their air...) But it made the experience all the more real...Don’t ask me how, it just did.

During “Black Balloon”, someone had actually blown up a few black balloons and they started being bopped across the pavilion seating. The site was just incredible.

I don’t want to go into detail about everything but I do want to try and describe this experience as best I can. So I’ll tell you about the college thing...

After a few more songs, the band takes a minute off from playing and Johnny says to the audience, “How many people out there going to college? *audience cheers and John smiles* Or more importantly, how many girls going to college? *again, the audience cheers* Yeah, I’m
against it myself. If I ever have a girl, I won’t let her go to college. She’ll come back at Thanksgiving with a tongue ring. *John sticks out his tongue for a better effect*” I can’t remember what else he said about college, and these probably aren’t his exact words but they’re pretty close. They played a few more songs (including “Bulletproof” and “January Friend”).

Then came a song that everyone knew. “OK, I think you guys know this one. *plays the first few cords of ‘Slide’ and the crowd gets louder than ever before* You sure you know it?” John jokes. They then continue to play ‘Slide’ but you couldn’t even hear them. The audience was singing
along to every word.

Somewhere in the show (I can’t remember exactly when), John and the band take another break to talk with the audience and he says, “I saw Bruce Springstein in concert last night. *you can hear a few ‘boos’ coming from the crowd* Don’t ‘boo’ him, he’s the f***in boss. *audience cheers* Oh I get it. You were saying ‘Bruuuuuce’. Oh OK. Wait, wait, wait. Before we get to our next song, turn the lights on. I’m gonna take a picture. *someone from backstage hands him a
cheap disposable camera* One, two, three!” and he takes a picture. Later on, he takes another but right before he does, he says to a girl in the audience who’s sitting on someone’s shoulder, “Put your shirt down! I gotta show this to my aunt!” Hehehe. I love these guys!

They go on to introduce Nathan December and Mr. Schultz and, of course, Mike, Robby, and John. And Robby tells everyone that his grandmother is there at the concert and everyone should give her a round of applause (of course, the audience does).

There’s a video that plays after “Iris” and a whole bunch of people leave, thinking the concert’s over. But how wrong they were! After the video about greed (they portrayed it as a product you could buy), the band comes right back out and right back into action! “This is my favorite part of the show. Ya know why? Because this is when you find out who your real friends are. Your real friends never leave after “Iris”. There’s some guy at the gate right now saying, ‘Come on, honey. I wanna beat the traffic!’” And then they break into a song.

The last song they played was “Hate This Place” and I thought it was the perfect way to end the concert. The lyrics are so incredible and awesome. The whole night was great! As I was walking out of my seats, I stopped and bought a T-shirt to commemorate the event, even though I still had my ticket stub. And I’m still wearing the shirt, almost 24 hours after the show ended.

But the evening was truly amazing for me. And I felt special because the girls around me who were around 18 or so only knew the words to “Name”, “Iris”, “Slide”, and “Black Balloon” and I sang along to all of them. My first Goo show and it was incredible. It certainly won’t be my last. I
turned my mother into a Goober and know she happily surfs the web, looking for Goo Goo Dolls web sites. There is nothing that the band could have done to make that night any better. If only I had gotten to meet them, had closer seats, and a non-broken toe!!! Now I’m addicted and need to see them again! I know this is much too long and you may cut out as much as you would like of it, but I felt that I should tell the night as I can remember. And I need a documentation of it so I’ll be able to remember it as vividly as possible.
Thank you, Goo Goo Dolls, for making my night absolutely magical!!
