TRINITY

NBC, Fri. 9-10
First of all, ABC is untouchable on Friday nights. Their "TGIF" campaign has always assured them success with kids since it began. You can even trace it back to the early 70s with their old 1972 Friday night lineup: "Brady Bunch", "Partridge Family", "Room 222", "Odd Couple", "Love American Style".
Keeping this in mind, NBC tried to bow out of the competition by airing a show that would attract the adults who were turned off by the likes of the kiddie fare on ABC. "Trinity" was an ensemble drama about the Irish-Catholic McCallister family. One was a priest; one was a cop; one was a union organizer; one was a bond trader; & one did drugs. "Trinity" was an adult family drama of adult children and how they interact with their siblings, and their parents.
Not a bad concept and programming it against the ABC kid's shows was shrewd. However, this show seemed to go in too many directions at once--the product of some very overambitious writers/producers. It tried to make political statements (union organizer), spiritual statements (priest), and combined elements of soap opera and police melodrama. The result was very unfocused. A worthy effort that unfortunately missed its mark.
