If only there was something more "new" about "The New Odd Couple"!
There were some differences. Ron Glass (Detective Ron Harris on "Barney Miller") played Felix Unger and Demond (Lamont Sanford on "Sanford and Son") Wilson played Oscar Madison. The setting was the same and the supporting characters (NOT the same actors) were back--the Pigeon Sisters, Murray the Cop, etc.--except Felix's ex-wife was now named "Frances" instead of "Gloria". They even recycled scripts from the original series and reworked them in this series. So this was essentially a black "Odd Couple" with nothing new to offer.
Again, "name recognition" propelled this series and it was about as popular as a "revival" TV series usually gets. |
