Sally Struthers reprises her role as "Gloria Stivic", husband to Mike Stivic, liberal son-in-law to Archie Bunker in "All in the Family". In this spinoff, Gloria is divorced from Mike who remarried a flower child and ran off to live with her in a commune. (In the 80s?? Apparently so!)
Gloria moved to the town of Foxridge in upstate New York to get started on her new life away from ex-husband Mike. With her is their son Joey--originally seen on "All in the Family" as a baby--now he's 8 years old. Gloria wants to become a veterinarian, but gets a job as a veterinarian's assistant. Her boss/landlord is none other than Burgess Meredith as Dr. Willard Adams whose last memorable TV role was as Batman's arch foe "The Penguin".
The veterinarian's office allowed her ample opportunity to play opposite various animals. Picture Sally Struthers staring back at a tortoise and you've got the gist of the humor level of this show.
"Gloria" was not even true to the original character created for "All in the Family". Her marriage to Mike was shaky, but it remained solid despite it all. What's more, Gloria was a modern liberated woman (by 1970s standards at least), and in "Gloria", her character had become a "Goldie-Hawn-esque" dizzy blonde. Carrol O'Connor had a cameo appearance during rating sweeps weeks, but before long, even with its ties to the popular "All in the Family", this show stifled itself.
"All in the Family" spawned many other TV series, including: "Maude" (she was Edith's cousin), "Good Times" (Florida Evans was Maude's maid), "The Jeffersons" (The Bunkers' black neighbors who "finally got a piece of the pie"), "Archie Bunker's Place" (Archie's hijinks running Kelcy's old bar--the character of Edith died during this show), "Checking In" (starring Marla Gibbs as Florence, the Jefferson's maid), "Gloria" (Archie & Edith's daughter), and "704 Hauser" (starring John Amos, previously the father on "Good Times"--another spinoff--now playing Ernie Cumberbatch, head of a black family who moved into the Bunkers' old house on 704 Hauser Street).
"Oh, help me Looooooord!"
