Buddy Faro (Dennis Farina) plays a private-eye, Rat Pack era legend who dropped out of sight 20 years ago and is discovered in a Mexican gutter by a wannabe detective who revives him and returns him to Hollywood. Already the premise is flaky. Mark Frost, the executive producer (who previously worked on "Twin Peaks") said he wanted to create something that was "entertainment driven...that combined mystery and comedy".
TV Guide was sold. They bestowed upon Buddy Faro "Favorite Show" status. They called it "the season's coolest, swankest original. Farina revels in this Hip Van Winkle role, backed up by a finger-snapping soundtrack and stylized visuals that recreate a seedily seductive Old Hollywood." Personally, I would be wary of any program TV Guide refers to with a word like "swank".
The viewers were not sold. This show was cancelled before the season was out. Soon the only snapping that could be heard was when viewers snapped their remotes to another channel. |
