Younger Sephiroth

"Sephiroth, time to go to school!" a tall, slender man called up to his son. Sephiroth came running down the stairs, as fast as his little six-year-old legs
could carry him. He was a little wisp of a thing: scrawny, gaunt, sick-looking. Only three feet tall, with shoulder-length white hair, and eyes greener
than any emeralds, young Sephiroth was a reclusive six-year-old. He was wearing a loose white shirt and black shorts. Strapped to his back was a
backpack stuffed with snacks, books, and toys to take along on his first day to kindergarten. The weakling boy had no idea how dangerous his life
would get in the years to come.....

Ten years come and go, Sephiroth aging and growing up. Now a rebellious and roguishly handsome sixteen-year-old, Sephiroth begins dreaming of
joining SOLDIER. He has always been made fun of, picked on and beaten up for his lunch money ever since kindergarten. He now walked slowly
toward the old, weather-worn high school in the middle of the city of Karoon, a small, backwater village near Rocket Town. It was behind the Nibel
Mountains, its nearest neighbors being Rocket Town and Nibelheim.
Sephiroth never saw Nibelheim before.... Maybe he might go there after he joins SOLDIER.......
Sephiroth never saw the large, robust young man in front of him. The white-haired youth bumped into the larger youth, causing Sephiroth to
bounce off of the larger youth's large belly and crash onto the ground.
"Well, well. Looky here," the larger youth sneered at Sephiroth, "well, Sephy, why don't you make it easy on yourself, and just give me your lunch
money?"
"Go suck yourself, Jarek," Sephiroth retorted, standing up and wiping the dust off of his pants. "I have to get to class,"
As Sephiroth continued on past Jarek, the larger youth grabbed the back of Sephiroth's shirt, easily lifting the smaller, thinner youth from the ground.
Sephiroth had been in this position before: almost everyday from the beginning of high school, this particular bully always lifted him from the ground,
hung him upside down, and shook him violently until all the money in his pockets came out.
Sephiroth, about five minutes later, groggily got up, bruised and beaten. He quickly went inside the high school, hoping to get into class before the
bell rang.
Money was the least of his worries, however, as he wanted to train himself, in mind and in body, so that he could get into SOLDIER and show that
damn Jarek who was the tougher.....

Sephiroth's father saw the battered youth shakily enter the house and retreat into his room. Sephiroth's father then picked up the phone and dialed
a number.
"Dr. Hojo? Hi, this is Kurt Crifer. I think we are wasting our time.
Experiment 103, Codename-Sephiroth is failing, miserably. For the past sixteen years I have been acting as the father of Experiment 103,
Codname-Sephiroth. Each time he confronts a bully, he always gets beaten up. I thought he was supposed to be the perfect SOLDIER. He's nothing
but a weakling." Crifer listened to Hojo's response and answered, "Well, yes, he has been hinting about joining SOLDIER....I see, let him fight his own
battles. That should toughen up Experiment 103......"

The next day at school was just like yesterday: Sephiroth was beaten up by Jarek again, robbed of his money and his pride. Now Sephiroth was at his
locker, books in hand, forehead against the closed locker door. He felt a cool hand touch his shoulder. Sephiroth turned his head and saw Alexandria,
the only person who HASN'T beaten the seven shades of crap out of him. The only person who actually talked to him nicely. His only friend.
She was five feet tall with long, blond hair that she wore in a ponytail. She had eyes that were greener than his own, and a fondness for life. She
was always excited about something, usually a dance, a party, or a family picnic. She had often invited him over to her house for dinner or some
other occasion, but he always declined.
"Hey! Oh, I guess Jarek got to you again?" she said gently, seeing the dried blood on his lips.
Sephiroth nodded.
"Don't worry!" she said in her usual, cheerful voice, "You can have some of my lunch!"
"Thanks, but no thanks," he replied.
"Suit yourself, but if you want to insult my cooking and make me hate you, then that's just fine with me!" she said, pouting.
"You're a bad actress, Alex." Sephiroth told her, "Fine, fine, I'll have some of your lunch, if it makes you feel better. I'll be at the same table in the
cafeteria,"

Sephiroth lay awake in his bed, looking out the window at the stars. That was nice of Alex to offer him her lunch, but he still wanted to be
independent. He wanted to be strong. He wanted to be in SOLDIER.
"What do I have to do, God?" he said softly to the stars.
The stars gave him no answers.Yet another day of high school. Another walk back to the old worn-down schoolhouse. He saw Jarek waiting for
him outside the school doors. Sephiroth clenched his fists and gritted his teeth. He wasn't about to let that bastard beat him again.
Jarek easily lifted Sephiroth and flipped him upside down.
As Jarek shook him violently, Sephiroth felt his blood boil. He started having murderous thoughts. Rage. Anger. Maim. Kill.
He reacted.
Sephiroth shifted his weight, pulling his ankles out of Jarek's grip. Sephiroth landed in a roll, standing back up at the end of his roll and turning
around to face Jarek. Before the larger youth could react, Sephiroth lashed out with ten rapid punches. Jarek fell to the ground, flat on his back,
his nose shattered and his jaw crushed. Jarek started whimpering like a baby and crawled off, tears welling in his eyes.
Sephiroth watched him crawl away, not even noticing the flecks of bone and the warm, oozing blood on his knuckles. He felt strangely calm and
relaxed. Letting his rage control him allowed him to find a sense of inner peace, as if killing and hurting others was a part of his existence. It was
so easy for him to hurt others......so easy....so horribly easy......
Sephiroth came in five minutes late to class. The teacher was about to scold him, but then noticed the bright red blood and the flecks of bone on his
knuckles.
"Sephiroth! What have you been up to?" Mrs. Crickler demanded.
"Giving an asshole as very good lesson," Sephiroth said with a murderous glare her way, "I might be tempted to give you that same lesson if you
involve yourself in my personal affairs, Mrs. Crickler,"
The tone of voice and the fact that he meant every word he said made everyone, Alexandria included, shift uncomfortably. What had happened to
the weakling youth that everyone picked on?

It was lunch time and Sephiroth was sitting by himself, again, in the corner of the cafeteria. The blood had dried on his knuckles, giving him a
murderous aura. He liked the fact that people were scared of him. He liked the smell of fear. He smiled evilly at anyone who even looked at him.
Then Alexandria sat down in the chair opposite of him.
"What the Hell is wrong with you, Sephiroth?" She was quite mad. Sephiroth thought she was kind of cute when she got mad.
"I grew up," Sephiroth looked like he was going to explode.
Alexandria was taken aback at the coldness in his voice. She never saw him act like this before.
"Go away. Leave me alone."
"A-alright," she said softly, standing up and heading for her friends who were at another table.

Now Sephiroth was eighteen. He was more reclusive, more violent. Everyone, including Alexandria, were afraid of him. He always wore an expression
that could only be described as.....evil. He didn't care who he hurt. He just went into a violent rage whenever someone even touched him. No one
dared to call the police or even his parents, in fear of getting hurt or worse. Sephiroth had been doing some heavy workouts; his body wasn't as
gaunt, but it was still slender. He was more muscular, more dangerous. He was quicker, more agile. If he had this build when he beat up Jarek,
the big bully might not even be alive from Sephiroth's punches.
"Uh-uh-um, here's your test, S-S-Sephiroth," Mrs. Crickler said, handing him the math test. Sephiroth took it without a word. Halfway into class,
after an uncomfortable silence had engulfed the classroom, Alexandria stood up, her chair screeching against the floor.
"This has gone far enough, Sephiroth," she started, hands on her hips, "I, for one, am tired of you being such a jerk!"
Sephiroth, still sitting in his chair, replied, "If you want me to leave town, Alex, then fine, I'll leave town. I was planning to anyway,"
Sephiroth got out of his seat and left the classroom, his test only half finished. Alexandria just stood there, mouth gaping open in surprise
. She had no idea he would just get up and leave! Tears started welling up in her eyes as the other kids lifted her up onto their shoulders, making
her a hero of sorts for finally getting rid of Sephiroth.

Sephiroth was in his room, packing. A large back pack was stuffed all the way to the brim with clothes, food, and other provisions. It was a long
hike to Midgar. Sephiroth closed his backpack, strapped it to his back, and started walking down the stairs. Kurt was there, intercepting him at the
base of the stairs.
"Where do you think you're going, Sephiroth? And why are you home early?" Kurt asked him.
"I left, what's it look like?" Sephiroth snapped back, "And I'm heading for Midgar. I'm going to join SOLDIER. And there's NOTHING you can do to
stop me!" Sephiroth ran at breakneck speed, heading for the Nibel Mountains and beyond.Sephiroth was in a large, circular training room. He was
surrounded by weights, weapons, and strategically positioned planks, boards, risers, and a dais. All of these things constituted Sephiroth's personal
training gym.
Sephiroth himself was in the center of the room, doing one-handed push-ups. And not just any one-handed push-ups, either. He had a gravity
machine nearby that increased the gravity in this room by X100 of the Planet's normal gravity. Under such heavy pressure, a normal human
would have been turned into a pancake.
But not SOLDIER Second Class Officer Sephiroth. He had been doing a lot of extensive training. Only one more rank to go and he would be the best
of the best.
Sephiroth, his 10,000 push-ups finished, stood up, stretched out his arm muscles, strode over to a pile of neatly folded clothes, and started dressing.
He had a mission to complete: stop the rebels at Fort Condor.
Just then, a normal soldier in blue armor and helmet came inside the room....and was dropped to his knees under the intense weight of the X100
gravity. Sephiroth shut off the gravity machine and sat down on the dais, awaiting this blundering soldier's message.
"Um, uh..." the soldier began, "Um, uh-huh, yeah, uh, President Shinra requests all members of SOLDIER First and yourself to report to his office,
immediately!" With that, the quivering soldier scurried out of the training room.
So, Sephiroth thought, Shinra wants me in his office. Question is, for what? Why interrupt my mission to Fort Condor?

There were currently ten First Class officers and fifteen Second Class officers. Third Class had about one hundred officers, but it was steadily
increasing by about one new officer for every two hundred that attempt to join. Sephiroth strode in, Masamune sheathed and at his side.
"Late again, Mr. Sephiroth?" Shinra said from behind his large, 'C' shaped desk. "That is not a very good trait for a SOLDIER officer,"
"You called this meeting and interrupted my training for preparation to Fort Condor," Sephiroth snapped back.
"Forget Fort Condor, Sephiroth," Shinra pulled out a cigar from his jacket pocket and lit it. "You're going to the T.E.S.T. Terminal Examiner
SOLDIER Test."
Sephiroth was shocked, a very rare thing. He was going to take the T.E.S.T.!! He might just get into SOLDIER First Class if he passes it! The
T.E.S.T. was basically a random number of tortures and battles that a SOLDIER Second Class must pass to get into SOLDIER First Class. First
Class officers always threw a big celebration party for those who pass the T.E.S.T. They were probably here to give Sephiroth a victory party
if he passes.

Sephiroth now stood inside a narrow passageway, the beginning of the T.E.S.T. Sephiroth heard the bell start ringing. He ran down the narrow
passageway, jumping and ducking as the iron spikes shot out of the walls. This entire complex of death traps was located right under Midgar.
And only SOLDIER officers and other high-ranking officals knew about its existence.
Sephiroth quickly dove into a roll to avoid a rather large spike that was aimed for his head.

Shinra and Hojo were watching Sephiroth from a large computer monitor. They were in Shinra's office.
"He's very good," Shinra muttered.
"Indeed. I created him to be the best, after all." Hojo said smugly.
"Of course," Shinra agreed, "he is, after all, your biological son."

Sephiroth easily cleared the narrow passageway and ended up falling into a pool of water that was -700 degrees Celsius. Normally, a man
would have died of hypothermia, but not Sephiroth. He forced his heart to slow down, causing it to pump less blood into his veins, forcing it
to use up less oxygen. His heart was now beating once every hour, keeping him alive under water indefinitely. Sephiroth saw an under water
cave about two hundred feet below him. He quickly swam down there, hoping that the pressure wouldn't kill him.
Sephiroth went inside the cave, and broke through the surface of the water. The cave was only half-filled with water; the rest of it was empty.
There was a stretch of land near the wet rock wall to Sephiroth's left. The white-haired man swam over to the stretch of land and got on it,
glad to be out of the water.
"I guess I should follow this cat-walk," he muttered to himself. Sephiroth started walking long the stretch of land, hoping that he wouldn't slip.
The end of the cat-walk opened up into a large steel room.
It was totally empty. A large iron door was in the far wall opposite of the cat-walk. Sephiroth, thinking this room to be yet another trap, ran at
top speed down the room, hoping to get to the iron door before the traps started. He did indeed get to the door, but it was too heavy for him to
open.
The floor panels began to levitate off of the ground, spinning wildly. Sephiroth had to dodge from side to side as the spinning panels shot toward
him, smashing against the door. Sephiroth, tired of the annoying traps, drew the Masamune from its sheath, turned to face the door, and slashed
the door open. He quickly ran through the open doorway, dodging yet another panel in the process.

He now came to a huge circular room: his training gym. He stepped into the gym, turned around, and saw that a secret panel in the wall was
closing. Sephiroth turned back around, hearing someone clapping. He saw Shinra and Hojo standing there, applauding his skills.
"Congratulations, Mr. Sephiroth," Shinra said cheerily, taking his hand and shaking it, "I proclaim you SOLDIER First Class," Hojo stepped up to
Sephiroth, handing him a certificate of achievement.Sephiroth was once again training in his private gym. This time, however, he was training
under X8,000 normal gravity. He was so close to mastering such intense gravity....
A sharp knock came from the door. He had told everyone to knock because of the increased gravity. Sephiroth stood up, went over to the gravity-
machine, and shut the gravity back down to normal. Sephiroth opened the door, and was very surprised at what he saw: Alexandria.
She was as beautiful as the day he left all those long years ago. Her blond hair was still in a ponytail and her eyes were still greener than his own.
She was taller, though, and more feminine. She was wearing a tight-fitting red dress that Sephiroth thought was a bit revealing.
"What do you want?" Sephiroth growled, hating to be disturbed.
"Sephiroth, the village....." she sniffled.
"What happened back home?" he asked, his voice softer.
"The Mako reactor back home exploded," she began, "everyone died; except me and your father,"
"Serves them all right," he grumbled.
"How can you say that!" she yelled at him, shocked.
"That town never offered me anything but humiliations and getting beaten up!"
Alexandria's head drooped, "Sephiroth......"
"Go away, Alexandria. I have to continue my training. I'm leaving for Nibelhiem in the morning,"
The finality of his voice caused her to back off. After composing herself, she turned and left, trying to hide her sadness and disappointment. Where
had her childhood friend disappear to? This man wasn't the Sephiroth she knew. He was a pretender, a lie.

After Alexandria had left the SOLDIER complex, Sephiroth turned the gravity machine back on. This time he set it to X100,000 normal gravity.
Training always gave him a sense of peace. Drops of sweat started rolling down his face as he pushed himself to his limit and beyond.
Nibelhiem. He would go to Nibelhiem. He was assigned to investigate it, along with a young escort guard named Corporal Cloud Strife and
SOLDIER First Class Zack. He had never met either of them, but had read much about them. Cloud Strife was from Nibelhiem, an intelligent, though
often confused, young man who was sixteen years old. Zack, a native of Gongaga Village, who was also intelligent, but cocky. He was only seventeen
years old. Both were very good at their jobs and both were good friends.
"This should be an interesting trip," Sephiroth said to himself after finishing his training. He had no idea how ironic his last words of sanity were.
