HEAT Report for 1/20/2002.
Live from the Phillips Arena in Atlanta GA.
Your Hosts: Michael Cole and Al Snow.
Your Royal Rumble pre-game show.
Show starts off with hype for the Vince McMahon/Ric Flair street fight for later this evening. We see footage of some of the Nature Boys greatest matches.
Shawn Michaels is seen arriving at WWF New York. The former WWF champ is hosting the party tonight. Next, we get a recap of the Dudley Boyz parking lot assault on current tag champs Tazz and Spike Dudley from Smackdown. Lillian Garcia interviews the champs, and though Spike is wearing a neck brace, he's ready to rock.
Cole and Al briefly mention William Regal challenging Edge for the Intercontinental Title tonight. We go back to Smackdown, and see video of Jazz' attack on Women's champ Trish Stratus. Jazz slammed Trish's fingers in an equipment case. We go backstage, and see Trish preparing for her match with Jazz. Coach does a quick interview, asks about the condition of her hand. Against trainers advice, Trish indicates shes ready to go. Break.
Snap of the Night: Big Show tosses Rikishi out of the ring in the 'Over the Top' challenge last week on Smackdown.
Cole and Al plug the products, then go over the rules of the Rumble. Next, we see a video featuring the recent happenings concerning some of the participants in tonight's main event set to Kid Rocks 'Cocky'. Focus is on Stone Cold Steve Austin and HHH. Al lets us know he'll be entering the Rumble at #6. More video hype follows, then we go backstage, where Lil interviews last seasons Tough Enough winner Maven. He lets us know he's honored to be participating in the Rumble-beyond that, who knows? Break.
Royal Rumble Replay: Kane dominates last years main event, staying in the ring over an hour.
Slam of the Week: Stone Cold and HHH defeat Booker T and Kurt Angle on Smackdown last week. After the match, 'Taker appeared atop the ramp, and all 5 engaged in a staredown.
Our hosts return, and we go back to Smackdown's 'Over the Top' challenge. Rikishi took on Lance Storm and Christian. After the big man tossed the Canucks over the top, The Big Show hit the ring to continue the action. Show tossed Rikishi out, and the APA decided to join the fun. After eliminating Show, then half-heartedly trying to throw each other out of the ring, Kane made his entrance and tossed Faarooq and Bradshaw out in short order. We go backstage, where WWF co-owner Ric Flair has made his entrance with his lovely wife and young son (no, not David). Coach attempts an interview, but Ric has more important things on his mind-namely, his street fight tonight with Vince. Break.
Royal Rumble return: Curt 'Mr. Perfect' Hennig makes his return to the WWF.
Cole and Al send us down to Jim Ross and Jerry 'The King' Lawler at ringside. Our Olympic Hero hit the ring to address the crowd. The crowd showed no respect, chanting 'you suck' to the beat of Kurts entrance music. Kurt was nonplussed until the 'What' chants started. This caused Kurt to go into a slow burn both Oliver Hardy and Bob Newhart would be proud of. After berating the crowd Kurt walked back up the ramp. The King then entered the ring and came to Angles defense. Lawler put over the importance of winning the Rumble, and mentions of Austin and HHH got big pops from the crowd. However, The King claimed that Kurt was his personal pick to win tonight. Kurt appears pleased.
J.R. reminds us that tonight Chris Jericho will defend his Undisputed Championship against The Rock tonight. Footage of Y2Js victory at the Vengeance PPV airs, followed by highlights of recent events surrounding Rocky and Jericho. Climax was their fantastic verbal confrontation from Smackdown. Show ends. |
