“Wow… cool…” Bedine commented.
“No… HOT.” Akurei sighed as he wiped his brow. As they got closer to Inferno, the hotter it got. The cool woods and all scraps of color save those of the fires were gone, long dead by the immense heat. Bedine was panting hard, but Gemaside, part fire, and Lavora were bouncing along. Akurei envied them a moment. He turned back to the path and came to a halt.
A bridge was before him, either side…
“Wo… Lava!” Ryu stared. Lavora, meanwhile, was trotting to the lava’s edge.
Akurei noticed her moment in time to see her jump out and landing with a splash in the lava. He gasped, but grinned when he saw her surface, splashing around. Ryu laughed as walked down to get her. But his face changed as he stared into the red and white surface. He closed his fists tight and reached out to touch the burning surface. Akurei ran at him.
“Ryu what are you doing?!” But Ryu’s hand had melded into the lava. Akurei stopped dead as Ryu’s skin burned and melted. Ryu only continued to walk into the lava, Lavora calling him on. Akurei felt sick as he saw wet muscle and then bone as flesh melted off, dissovling before it hit the surface. And Ryu’s head vanished under the surface. Akurei stared, as did Gemaside. But Bedine seemed to have a tiny smirk in his dogish grin.
“Ryu?!” Akurei heard himself say. But as his words ended, the lava split.
From the crater, two figures floated out. They were cloaked in an aura of flames. One was Lavora, who he recognized immediately, but the other one…was… It stood maybe 6 or 7 feet tall, with fiery colored scales down an almost human body. It seemed thick with muscle and its tail… yes… a tail… with blood-red spikes, touch the heels of its feet. It had claws on the ends of its hands and feet. But… its eyes… they reminded him of…
“Ryu?!” Gemaside screamed.
Akurei blinked hard. Indeed, as the creature came to him and stepped onto solid land, and gave a toothy grin.
“Akurei… it’s me… Ryu! This is what I really am… I remember now! I remember… uhhh… someone chasing me… dark and scary. But he knocked me down and put his hand on my chest and changed me into a human. Then threw me off the cliff… And you know the rest.”
Akurei shook his head. “What ARE you…?”
“I’m… what they call a Lizico. (Liz-e-co) One with this volacano…”
It baffled Akurei. “Well… I… uh… still need to get into town… Can you get me there?”
“Hai, come on.” He walked across the bridge. Akurei glared at Bedine’s smirk.
“You knew! Didn’t you??”
“I knew what he was when I saw him. I have met with one of his kind before…
My pack rescued one from a group of water pokemon.”
“Uh huh… weird.” He sighed and eyed where they were going. It seemed to be a small town, with houses made of stone.
“Probably to try and keep the heat down.” He glanced back to Ryu, who was stalking into a home just off of the path. Akurei followed him with a sigh.
Inside the “home” ws acuttly a tavern or inn of sorts, with creatures of every type imagineable. Akurei gaped about the room, then sat down as Ryu did at a table.
“Wow… this place is weird…”
“Nah, just different.” Akurei admitted that Ryu was right as they both ordered drinks. Akurei thought a moment about what Ryu had ordered him. What on the name of Mew was a glass of “Taponis???” He didn’t want to know anymore.
“Hey Ryu, can I get a room for the night?”
Ryu thought about it, then waved the barkeep over and muttered to him a moment. The barkeep, who has a tiny, fat fellow of bright blue, nodded and muttered something back.
“There is a room avaible here if you want. It’s for a human, so it is a lot cooler then it is here or outside.”
“Oh wow that’s perfect! Thank you.”
“No prob.” Ryu reached up and got his drink, then offered Akurei his.
Akurei took the tinest sip, and got a mouthful of one of the most refreshing drinks of his life. It seemed to fill him with energy. Ryu must have noticed his reaction because he grinned.
“Taponis is made from a bean called the senzu bean, which provides energy.”
Akurei nodded quickly as he took a long swig of it.
“Wo… good stuff!”
Ryu looked over his shoulder a moment.
“I am going to leave you for a time… Here is the key to the room,” Akurei was handed a very ornate key of silver. “It’s on the 2 floor, third door to the right. Now… The barkeep gave me a map for you.” Ryu unrolled a thick piece of parchment onto the table. “Here is the gym.” His finger tapped the volacano, which sent a shiver up Akurei’s spine. “And the centare… is here…
I think.” The finger was placed over the sign of healing, which Akurei had come to know.
“Thanks so much Ryu. You know… you seem different then the kid I found back near Triton City.” He laughed.
“Ha ha ha… very funny Akurei. I hope to see you again my friend…” And before Akurei could even blink, Ryu had vanished…

“Hey you two, you want to go relax abit upstairs.”
Gemaside and Bedine, who had been sitting impatiently at his feet, nodded hard. And he laughed.
“Ok ok… follow me.” He took his drink with him as he lead Gemaside and Bedine up the stairs to the room. Why were the other people in the inn giving him dirty looks? He fitted the key into the lock and walked into the room. Is was nice and cold, well, compared to the hall. He landed on the bed and grunted happily as Gemaside and Bedine landed on his chest. He wrestled with the two for a moment, then laughed. His hand flew to the maxtraballs on his belt, and he threw out two of them.
“Go Mistem, Chamelion!”
They appear, Mistem with a watery chirp, Chamelion with a roar. Akurei smiled.
“Hey you guys.” Mistem flowed over to Akurei and leaped onto the bed, splashing abit. But Akurei noticed, before Mistem literally smoothed him with affection, that Mistem’s water…wasn’t wet. He pulled Mistem off and took a deep breath. Mistem eyed his open mouth, and simply pulled its body down his throat. Akurei’s eyes flew wide as he struggled to breath. Gemaside roared in his mind, but he felt the darkness sweeping in. Mistem flowed deep into his lungs, and then… he passed out…

“Oh… wow…” Akurei whispered in his mind. The world seemed watery, flowing, and in 2 demensions. What… was going on…?
“Akurei…” He heard a watery voice say. “Don’t be scared… I’m showing you something…”
Before his mind’s eye flashed millions of pictures, feelings… memories.
They showed hundreds of battles, aginast other pokemon, the pain of being hurt, the glory of winning. Akurei gasped as he saw himself from…
“Mistem…” He whispered. He saw Bedine falled under power, and Gemaside…
“Please stop…!” He cried. Mistem’s memories faded. “How are you doing this?”
“If you try, you can be anyone of us…” It said softly. He felt its presense leave his mind…

“Damn you thing!!! DIE!!!” Gemaside roared as she watched Mistem flow out of Akurei’s mouth. Making sure he was breathing, she turned on Mistem, who stared calmly back. Gemaside glowed and opened her mind before Akurei laid a hand on her back.
“Don’t hurt it…”
She growled and looked at Akurei.
“You’re alright!!” She tackled him and licked his face. He laughed and hugged her, but his eyes looked at Mistem.
“Is it true?” He said quietly, and saw Mistem give a nod.
“Focus… concentrate… find their soul and let it flow into you… and become them.”
He hugged Gemaside tight and closed his eyes. He melded into her mind, seeping into the path he knew now, and searched till he found her soul. A bright core of purple-black then glowed darkly. He reached to it…

“L-look at him…” Bedine stuttered.
Chamelion looked up from where he lay, unmoved by what happened. But a scaly brow rose when he saw Akurei. The human had black fur all over him, and his hands were turning to paws. Chamelion stood up slowly, and walked to the edge of the bed and jumped up enough to lay his massive paws on its edge. His head tilted. Akurei was now breathing hard, and Chamelion blinked hard as he swore he saw Akurei’s ears move up on his head.
“No! Damn he’ll kill himself..” Chamelion growled and placed a paw heavily on Akurei’s chest, and pulled Akurei’s self back to the surface. As soon as he knew Akurei was himself again, he snarled.
“You pokemon are idiots! He isn’t ready for that… He hasn’t had the training!”
“Like we knew he was going to do that!?” Bedine said loudly.
“SHUT UP YOU TWO.” That was Mistem. “Look, he had to try!”
“Yea yea yea…. But he wouldn’t be much use if he died now would he???”
That made them shut up. Bedine nuzzled Akurei softly.
“Guys we should let him rest. Let’s go investigate the area…”
They nodded in reply. Chamelion let Mistem sit on his back as he walked out of the room and into the hall. It was getting dark now, and he let his night sight take over. He could tell that the others were too because their eyes started to glow. Bedine and Gemaside broadly walked down the stairs, and saw only a few drunken men in the dining area left. Chamelion growled at a man who looked at him, and the man quickly looked away. He slowly led the way out of the inn and into the street. His green scales reflected the heat, but he saw Bedine and Mistem were not doing so well. He nudged Gemaside lightly.
“Hey… Maybe we should make Bedine and Mistem go back.” His arrogant voice showing the tiniest bit of emotion.
She looked at them, “Ask them.”
He looked at the two. “You too should go back and protect Akurei.”
Mistem gave a watery chirp. “I agree.” Bedine just nodded. Mistem went to his back and the two made their way back to Akurei’s room. Chamelion flashed his teeth in a smirk and stayed by Gemaside’s side as they walked out of the town. He took a deep breath.
“Its very nice here…”
“I guess… I miss my home… all forest and tasty animals…”
He laughed, a haughty sound. “I agree… care to hunt?” She grinned and nodded. His sharp eyes saw the flash of a Diadem. He smirked again and pointed it out to Gemaside. She gave a silent agreement and they made there way slowly behind it. It seemed to be drinking and a tiny puddle. He crouched to jump on it, but Gemaside had vanished! He spun around and trotted off after her. His black nose gave a small sniff of the ground.
Where was she? Head to the ground, he almost slammed into her before he saw her. He started to ask what on the of Mew she was doing, but stopped when he saw what she was looking at. There were three small eggs in front of her, each a deep blue with faint lighter blue markings.
“We should take these. I can tell the mother and father are dead… the smell of their blood is thick here… they must be abandoned…”
He growled, but when he caught her eyes, he subsided. She picked up an egg in her mouth, tender as a pup, and he followed suit. She eyed the last one.
“Can you get it?”
“Uhhh… He looked it over with a snort, and turned around, and let his tail scoop it up carefully. A sigh.
“Well… let’s get these back to Akurei before I kill you for this… I feel like a female!” Gemaside’s rich laughter filled his head. He smiled in spite of himself and let her take the lead back.
“What are you doing, trespassers?”
Chamelion looked behind him. The Diem stood there, his black-steel body gleaming. Gemaside growled.
“Leave us be!”
“No pokemon may trepass on my territory!”
“We didn’t mean to…”
He didn’t respond, but tackled Gemaside. The egg in her mouth went flying.
Chamelion caught it and placed all three eggs together. He let out a harsh roar. What was good aginast Steel? Water! He thought of Mistem, and he slowly started to transform into it. He tackled Diem out of the way. Diem snarled and charged himself, and pieces of steel flew out of his mouth. Chamelion took a few hits, but wrapped a watery tenticale about Diem’s throat. The poor thing didn’t know what hit him before he blacked out. Chamelion watched it carefully. But Gemaside had a different idea. She made one of Akurei’s maxtraballs appear in her mouth, and tossed it onto Diem, who vanished into the ball. They both laughed.
“Akurei is gonna freak!” Gemaside grinned.
“I believe he will… now You are carrying that ball home!”
She woofed and picked it and an egg up. Chamelion smirked and picked up the other too and both made their way back to Akurei…

Mistem cocked her head at Akurei. He was so still…
“I know… I KNOW he is the one…” It whispered in its mind.

“Hey open the door!!!” Chamelion blurted into their minds. Bedine and Mistem gave each other a look, and Bedine opened the door. Gemaside walked in slowly and dropped the egg in Akurei’s lap, who gave her a smile. Chamelion did the same, and all four pokemon sat on the edge of the huge bed. Akurei took the three eggs, and looked at the maxtraball. He picked it up.
“DON’T OPEN IT!” Both Chamelion and Gemaside screamed.
He winced and nodded. He picked up an egg and studied it carefully.
“Awesome… new born pokemon…” He smiled placed them in the pouch with his money it. Sheesh, they were small. He laughed.
“Chamelion, Gemaside, Mistem, Bedine! Let’s rock and roll, were got another badge to win!”
They woofed, or swished, and bounded out of the room. He shook his head and called all of them back into their maxtraballs. He left the room, locked the door, and followed the map to the gym…

“Wow!!!!!” He said. The volcano was huge, hot, and… the gym! Akurei sighed and started to climb the mountain. It was hard going, and he had to avoided several trainers and other pokemon. But after about an hour, he had gotten to the rim of the volcano. He saw the lava, bright red, yellow, and white, seething in the pit below. There was a bridge of sorts crossing over the middle of the bridge. It was a sort of steel, what exactly he wasn’t sure, in the shapes of fire pokemon. Red shimmering tiles were laid across the flat part of it. Akurei looked around, but didn’t see anyone. He slowly walked out onto the bridge and sighed.
“It’s so hot…” But then he realized. It should be hot enough to fry him!
Sure he was hot, but he should have been toast by now!…

“Who dares to challenge me?” A voice roared out… A very familiar voice…
“OMG! RYU!?”
“Who is this?” It paused… “Akurei!?”
From the midst of the lava came three people. Two were two, small, Lizico, and one was Ryu. Akurei stared.
“You… mean… you’re the gym leader??????”
“Yea…It would seem so.” Fangs were shown as a grin.
“You won’t get pass us to get to Ryu!” The two others said in unison. Akurei glared.
“Two at once!?” They nodded.
“Gooooo… Burndacmine! (Burn-dac-mine) And go Nova!”
Akurei looked at the two and thought. His hand reached down for his maxtraballs.
“Go Chamelion and Mistem!” The two pokemon roared out of their balls to stand before him. Mistem stared down Burndacmine and Chamelion seemed to want to take on Nova.
“Burndacmine use fireblade now!”
The pokemon flared up and sent flat blade of flames at Mistem. Mistem flung itself to the ground. When the danger passed, it waited for Akurei’s command.
“Mistem, use… water grab!” Mistem slung out a watery tentacle and wrapped it over Burndacmine. Meanwhile, Chamelion was dodging fiery punches from the t-rex looking Nova. His deep green mane stood up to protect him.
“Chamelion, Camouflage now!” And suddenly Chamelion vanished. But Akurei alone saw the pearly haze that hung where he went.
“Mistem, water blast, Chamelion, Poison Drip!”
Mistem’s body spurted out hundreds of gallons of water on Burndacmine, so much that some of it feel to hiss aginast the lava. But Chamelion was shaking his head hard. But his eyes glowed green, and he held up a paw. From it, steel claws shot out of it, and hit Nova in the chest hard. Nova fell back and laid there for a moment, then shakily got back up. Akurei heard Chamelion laugh in his mind and whispered “Steel Claw.” Akurei grinned. A new move! Burndacmine was on the bridge, twitching and hissing from where
its body had met water. Nova was powering up again.
“Nova, use Nova blaster now!” Nova opened its mouth and fire poured from it, surrounding Chamelion. Chamelion roared in pain as he felt his steel body lose its resistance and melt some. But he landed on his feet, but only in time to feel the sting of Nova’s agility like move. Chamelion snarled and thought a moment, then started to glow. His body mutated slowly, gaining wings and height in the process. When he stopped, he looked like a lot like a Charizard! He opened his mouth and let Nova get buried in an avalanche of dirt and rock. When he had transformed back, both trainers had taken their pokemon back into the lava…

“I will not be so easy Akurei…Lavadrina come!” Akurei’s eyes flew wide as the giant fire pokemon came up and settled on the bridge. It was as tall as a Blastoise perhaps, but long as a Dragonair. It tossed its head back and forth and roared so loudly Akurei had to cover his ears.
“Lavora evolved Akurei… and now I must take my place back as the Inferno Gym Leader! Lavadrina use Molten strike now!” Molten lava flew from Lavadrina’s mouth and surrounded Mistem, encasing it in a hard shell as the lava cooled incredibly fast.
“NO!!!! Mistem!”
“Ha ha! Not so good I see! Finish off Chamelion with Nova Blaster and Slash!” *Wow… I’m going to lose…* Akurei’s mind thought. “And then finish off the rest of Akurei’s pokemon as you see fit!!!” Ryu gave a deep, dark laugh. Before Akurei could even move, Chamelion was flat aginast the bridge. Akurei called him and Mistem back and grabbed Bedine’s, Granight’s, and Gemaside’s maxtraballs and threw them out. They landed with heir calls and waited.
“Thundercrash, Rock Knife, and Nightmare now!!” Thunder lit the “gym,”
Rocks poured down, and psychic powers flew, all to slam into Lavadrina all at once. The smoke came up and surrounded the pokemon and Akurei, making him cough. He felt a painfull blast of heat, and the smoke cleared. Both Bedine and Gemaside lay on their sides, and Granight was being attacked under the ruthless Lavardrina’s claws. But he, too, fell. But…
“Gemaside…??” Akurei whispered as his friend started to glow black. She grew to the size of a ponyta as she laid there, and stripes of silver and red zipped over her fur. Her tail grew longer and slightly curled, the flame growing higher and gaining a hint of red to it. Her muzzle lengthed and two silver fangs slid out to press against her chin.
“Wha…?”

“Geminite, Gemaside’s evolved form.”

She had evolved to make sure Akurei won…

Pain gripped her body in its tight hold, and she felt the change begin. Her body slowly changed.
“I’m… evolving…” She said softly to herself. It felt so strange, like grasping at something forbidden, that she shouldn’t have gotten. But…
Akurei… and the others…
“I will not let you down!!” Her voice shot out as she evovled. Akurei thought her voice sounded slightly deeper. Her bulk slowly moved to its feet and spun to glare at Lavadrina, who sat stunned. Ryu also looked more then nervous.
“Choose which move… Geminite should lose… to learn Mind Meld…” A deep, haunting voice told him. He thought. Should it be PsychicSpan, Nightmare, or HeartStike? He knew Slash was to vauble to lose. He finally decided.
“HeartStrike…” He said after a moment. It was too dangerous for her to have…
“HeartStrike, deleted, Mind Meld, activated…” And the voice was gone.
“Ok… Gemas… Geminite! Use Mind Meld!” Geminite just stood there for second…
“Geminite..?” But Lavadrina was pouring fire on itself! “No way….” And then it started to thrash itself while an amused look on her face. And… it fell…
“Oh… Lavadrina…” Ryu walked over and hugged it. He looked up to Akurei who was placing his pokemon back into their maxtraballs and walking to Geminite. She butted his chest lightly and he hugged her neck. Geminite grabbed Akurei, whose limbs flailed until she put him on her now broad back. Akurei sat up and straddled her, keeping his legs tight aginast her sides.
