Chapter 23

I stand up to get the figure that is, of course, the Professor.
“Hello there Jewel!”
“Hi Professor! Please sit,” I reply pointing to one of the chairs.
“What is it you wanted to ask me?”
“Nothing to ask but something to return.” I take off the detailed watch and put it in his hand.
“But won’t you need it?”
“No, up here the time is different and they have different types of pokémon.”
“Oh,” he replies while looking at his invention. He puts it in his pocket and then asks, ”Why are you up here?”
“I found a pokémon that wanted a master and well I took the job. Unfortunately I can’t go back to Earth until a certain machine is made to help me do so.”
“I know what I’ll do! I’ll make that machine for you!”
“You’d do that Professor? For me?”
“Of course!” At those words I throw my arms around his neck and gave him a hug.
“Professor Oak, your time is up.” the woman at the counter says in a strict but otherwise nice voice. The Professor gets up and walks out the room through the opposite door he came in. The Professor was always a nice guy and well I’d miss having him around. I say my thanks to the lady with black hair at the counter knowing I’d use her service a lot in the future. I pick up Vulpix whom had fallen asleep during the waiting period of time. I open up the door and walk out. Another trainer coming down the hall doesn’t see me and bumps right into me knocking Vulpix and me onto the floor.
“Oww!” I reply as I hit the ground. Vulpix flies out of my arms and onto the floor next to me.
“I’m so sorry! I guess I wasn’t watching where I was going. Here let me help you up.” He extends his hand and I greatly accept his invitation by extending my hand as well. His strength was far beyond what I’d thought it would be. He effortlessly helped me up and for the first time I was face to face with this great looking light brown hair and emerald green-eyed babe! He was tall and muscular and immediately I began to blush.
“Thank you,” I manage to say. I walk over and pick up Vulpix. I quickly look her over and am happy to find that she’s all right. I smile at him and start walk away. After about two minutes I hear his voice calling someone. I turn around to find him running towards me.
“I never got to tell you my name and I never learned yours. I’m Scott and you’re?
“I’m Jewel. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” I put my hand out and he shakes it
“You’re not from around here, are you?”
“To tell you the truth, no. I’m from Earth.”
“That’s so cool! I am too!”
“Really?”
“Yeah. I was born there but I moved up here when I was really young so I don’t remember it very much.\ I’ve grown up in this here city and actually enjoyed it very much.”
“Okay,” I reply as I start to walk away again.
“Wait!”
“What is it now?” I say turning around.
“Well, Umm, Well, I was heading to get some lunch and I was wondering if you’d like to come.”
In shock I ask him, “So are you asking me to a date?”
“Umm, yeah.” He replies looking down at his feet.
“Then I’d be happy to.” He immediately looks up surprised and then smiles at me. Together we walk to the lunchroom happily. I get a salad and he gets a hamburger from the counter of food and he pays. I pick a spot to sit and he sits down next to me. We talk as we eat and surprisingly he is very polite unlike most guys from Earth. We finish and he says he wants to walk me to my room. We walk hand in hand until we are in front of my room. Vulpix is happily watching this all happy and at this moment I wish she wasn’t.
“Vulpix?”
“Vul?”
“Will you please leave us alone for a minute?” She agrees and I open the door and she walks inside. I close the door behind her and we stand staring at each other and I finally decide to make a move. I walk up to him and give him a kiss on the cheek. “Thank you for the wonderful lunch and I hope to see you again.”
“I really enjoyed this date as well and I’d love to do it again. What about tomorrow?”
“Sure. I’d really love to!”
“Great. I’ll see ya then!” He steps up to me and gives me a kiss on the forehead and a hug. He then walks away down the hall. I quickly slip into my room. I start to twirl around my room and then I land onto my back laying face up. I smile as I begin to think of Jeff and our time together. I get a swirl in my stomach as I think about tomorrow and what Jeff and me are going to do. I sigh and realize that I need to go and train my pokémon. I quickly pick up Vulpix and make sure I have all of my pokémon including Magnus. I walk back into the training room and try to find another trainer to fight. I look around and am shocked to see Jeff standing watching a battle between to beginners. I quietly walk over to him and tap him on the shoulder. He turns and smiles when he sees me.
“Jewel! Why are you here?”
“I’m a pokémon trainer
“Really? I thought that your Vulpix was just a pet.”
“Oh. Do you wanna battle?”
“I can’t…” he says embarrassed.
“But why?”
“Because my parents won’t let me get a pokémon until I finish the school here.”
“Oh,” I say disappointed. “Well then do you want to watch me battle?”
“I’d love to. Anything to be with you.” I smile and blush. I walk up to what looks like a worth opponent.
“Do you want to battle?” I ask the black hair guy.
“Sure,” he says so we walk over to an open battlefield and we take our positions. He pulls out a pokéball, enlarges it, and then throws it. A squirrel like pokémon pops out and I look at it strangely. It measures about half a foot tall and will fit in your hand. I take out my green pokédex and point it at the creature. It replies in a weird voice,

Squeak – The mouse pokémon
Although this pokémon is small,
if trained well it can be extremely useful.
It has many techniques and is strong against
most types. It excels in speed.
There is no evolution to this pokémon.

“Okay then I choose Ponyta!” I scream as I throw its ball.
“Pony what?” he says as my Ponyta appears before his small rodent. Immediately his pokémon becomes frightened.
“Ponyta Stomp!” my Ponyta stomps the ground before it and the Squeak is pushed back from the wind made by the move. “Do it again but this time harder!” Ponyta does the move and the Squeak is thrown against the wall.
“I knew that I shouldn’t have caught that weakling! Forget you Squeak!” He gets up and leaves his pokémon that is now too hurt to run after him.
“How dare he leave his pokémon?” I ask annoyed. I walk over and pick up the injured pokémon. I hold it in my two hands and smile at it.
“Well he left it because it was weak.”
“You don’t abandon a weak pokémon you train it! Now let’s get to the Pokémon Center!” We run out of the trainer’s room and into the Pokémon Center down the hall. I hand Squeak to the Nurse and sit down next to Scott on a bench near the reviving counter. I wait impatiently for Squeak to be healed. Scott and I talk for awhile and my thoughts are lifted for a little bit.
“Your pokémon is healed.” I stand up and she hands me the small creature. I walk back and sit next to Scott who is holding my Vulpix. Squeak almost seems to know how much I care about it so I decide to ask it.
“Squeak do you want to join me on my journey?” I pull out a pokéball and Squeak pushes the button. The pokéball sucks it in and closes around it. I smile at the pokéball like I had done many times before and I put it away. I get up and walk back into the training room. Immediately a trainer comes up and challenges me. I walk over to an empty battlefield and then pull out a pokéball. Squeak appears in front of me and I smile. Now the training shall begin!

Chapter 24

The trainer looks at my decision as a mistake and takes out a pokéball. With much confidence that his pokémon could beat mine the trainer throws it and a flying pokémon appears. The pokémon has huge wing that each one almost triples the size of my Squeak. I pull out my green pokédex again and it says;

Gantic - the hug flying pokémon
If this pokémon’s wing’s are spread out,
from tip to tip, they measure ten feet. It’s
large neck helps it capture small rodents and
it’s sharp claw helps it rip it’s prey to shreds.
It’s the evolved form of Huges.

“Squeak, be careful!”
“Gantic use bite!” The huge bird scoops down and almost gets Squeak.
“Squeak use your Speed attack and get on it. Then bite it!” Squeak immediately starts to zoom across the floor and then quickly jumps onto the big bird’s back. It bites into it with its sharp teeth. The pain it has received from such a small creature shocks the bird. The bird shrieks in pain as Squeak digs its teeth in deeper. I notice Squeak changing color and I take out my pokédex to find out why.

Squeak’s attack Absorb takes much energy
from the opposing pokémon as it bites.
This attack helps it win many battles and
it gains energy for future battles.

“Keep it up Squeak!” It does as I say and soon Gantic was too tired to battle any longer.
“Gantic return. I didn’t think you could beat that pokémon but I know you definitely won’t beat this one! Go Tigre!” A huge cat like pokémon appears before Squeak. I pull out my pokédex and point it at the huge creature;

Tigre – the tiger pokémon
This pokémon is a large fire cat creature and
hunts viciously. This pokémon prefers
to eat it’s opposite rather than make them faint.
Because of this it is not allowed to be used it
official battles. It is the first form and it does not evolve.

“Oh no! Squeak return!” The mouse looks at me weirdly and then goes into its pokéball. “I haven’t used this pokémon in a long time but I believe it can do it.” I whisper to myself. I throw the pokéball and Hypno appears. It looks around confused and then sees it’s opponent in front of it. “Hypno use your Psychic attack!” Hypno creates strong rays of psychic power and directs them towards Tigre. Tigre is very poorly trained so it faints immediately.
“Stupid Tigre! You’re supposed to be really strong.” He kicks the Tigre and it falls to the ground in pain then walks away.
“What’s with people here? They ditch pokémon here it they’re weak! These people are so mean!” I walk over to Tigre and start to pet it. It begins to purr and I take out an empty pokéball. I tap it on its head and it’s sucked in then the red light goes out.
Scott looks down at me and says, “If this keeps up you’ll have thousands of pokémon.” We laugh at the comment and head out of the training room and right into the pokécenter. This time I hand all of my pokémon over to the nurse to be fed and healed. In about ten minutes all of my pokéballs were back in the black belt-pack and I had Vulpix in my arms. Scott and I are walking side by side through the halls aimlessly. We had no clue where to go so we just walked around the city. Scott showed me many places to eat and many statues that meant a lot to the city. I notice a very nice place and suggest we sit down. Scott agrees and we sit down in front of a nice flowing fountain. I put head on his shoulder and he puts his arm around my waist. We sit there for awhile and both of us enjoy our time together very much.
“Hey Scott! Who’s that girl your with?” I look up to see a guy with blond hair and blue eyes. Scott and I stand up startled.
“Oh. Never mind it’s just Peter,” he says after realizing who it is.
“Just Peter! You won’t be saying that after I beat your girlfriend’s pokémon into the ground. Come on let’s battle! Two on two!” He takes out a pokéball and throws it. Finally a pokémon I know pops out of it.
“A Farfetch’d! I haven’t seen one of those in ages. Well I think you’ll find this one quite a challenge! Go Growlithe!”
“Yeah right! Farfetch’d use Leek Slap!” Farfetch’d flies up into the air and brings it leek down on Growlithe’s head. My Growlithe howls in pain but on an instinct it jumps forward and bites Farfetch’d on the head.
“Far- Far - Farfetch’d!” it screams loudly.
“Farfetch’d return! How could it loose?” He looks down at the pokéball and puts it away. “Umm…” he says looking through his pokéballs. “Here it is!” He takes it out and throws it. An unknown pokémon pops out and it screams, “Peerkinneeer
“What’s that?” I point my pokédex at the completely black creature and it says,

Perkiner – the perky pokémon
Since this is the fastest pokémon known
many are afraid to battle against it and
normally end up giving up before the battle ends.
With it’s ability to fly it is a very dangerous
opponent. It’s the evolved form of Perkin.

I take another look at the pokémon. I notice there are no wings on the creature but except for that fact it looked exactly like a bird. “Okay! Growlithe use your Flamethrower attack now!” Fire gathers in his mouth and then his blows it towards his opponent. Perkiner quickly jumps out of the way and lands on Growlithe’s back. It brings its beak down against Growlithe’s head hard and fast. It does this three times before Growlithe can react. Growlithe growls and reaches back and grabs the Perkiner by its neck. Wings pop out of its back and it flaps them so hard that Growlithe lets go. He flies up against the wall and lands so hard that it makes me shudder. “Growlithe!” I scream. “Return!” I quickly say before Perkiner can finish it off. “I haven’t used this one in awhile either but I have a feeling it will work! Go Vaporeon!” I throw the ball and before Peter and his pokémon can react to my selection I scream, “Use your Ice Beam and freeze that Perkiner!” Vaporeon creates a beam and fires it at the opponent. Perkiner tries to dodge out of the way but it’s wing is frozen and it now to heavy to lift.
“No! Perkiner has never lost!”
“Well you never fought Jewel before!” I laugh at Scott’s comment as Peter makes Perkiner return.
“That was a great fight. I’m really amazed you beat my pokémon! Scott was right about you. You’re a great pokémon trainer! That’s why you deserve this.” He shows me a pokéball and I gaze at it.
“What’s this for?”
“Well, I’m the greatest pokémon trainer on this city and you beat me. I’m the gym leader on this city
“But what’s it for exactly?”
“Well we got this idea from people on Earth.” He opens the pokéball and a badge glistens in the light. I take the badge and look at it. I take the pair of white wings and put it in my black belt-pack. “If you get all of the badges then you can fight against the greatest of all the cities.”
“Oh, well thanks I guess"
“Your welcome.” He says to me. Then he turns to Scott and says, “Quite a catch, quite a catch.” We laugh and I begin to blush at the comment.
Scott walks me back to my room and I lay down on my bed. A dream drifts delightfully into my head as I sleep and it stays there the whole night. When I finally awake I’m afraid of what’s before me. A dark figure creeps over my bed and yet doesn’t see me awake. I try to calm down so the creature doesn’t realize I’m awake.
“So beautiful and yet out of my reach…” the creature stops abruptly in what was being said to look around. “…Her safety will be ensured as long as I watch over her. And I will always watch over her…” he looks around once more before adding, “…I’ve looked after her my whole life and never have I been able to touch that skin o that hair for fear she’ll awake and see me. I wish I could, for it is almost like I have since I have watched her sleep every night of her entire life. I envy that new boy she’s with and how they seem to cling to one another with such security. I want so much to be one of here numerous pokémon that she loves and cares for so much…” The creature stops and tear slips down his face. “…But it’s not allowed by law.” I suddenly feel like reaching out and touching the poor creature’s hand and let it feel mine. On an impulse I reach forward to touch him but right before my eyes he disappears. I sadly stand up and change my clothes then pick up Vulpix who was asleep on the chair near my bed. I walk out of the room disappointed that I couldn’t even console the poor pokémon’s feelings. The rest of today I have been walking around thinking about the morning. I went to the research lab for pokémon and went on the computer. After many searches I finally found what I was looking for. An article called, “The Guarding Pokémon” caught my eye during my searches. This is the article I found.

“The Guarding Pokémon.”
…With intensive studies we have found that such a pokémon does exist. I
was amazed to find that this pokémon is completely sealed from human
eyes and this is why they were given the task of guarding one human through
out life. Since it cannot be seen it is very lonely and can have no master.
They don’t have any friends and no one has ever really seen them in
their true form. Still unknown everywhere no one knows that a pokémon
follows them around and many people wouldn’t believe us if we
told them. They need real proof like a photo, not just some studies.
I want many to believe us and our studies but they are stubborn and will
never without some hard-core proof…

I took me many hours to find that and that’s all I found. The article contained over two hundred pages and this was the most important of it. I believe since I heard the creatures with my own ears but I wouldn’t have otherwise. I walk back to my room knowing the fact something I couldn’t see was following me. I walk in my room and close the door quickly. I hadn’t seen Scott all day but well I was busy. Soon I’d have to leave for a different city and I wouldn’t see him for awhile when I do that. I change and lay down in my bed with Vulpix next to me. I lay in my bed for about an hour before the creature appears. I watch its movements and uncanny jesters as it looks over the room and Vulpix and me included. It sits down in the chair that is next to my bed and stairs at me longingly. I look away and then stir a little. When I look back the figure is not there but in my mind he’s sitting in front of me in the chair and I just can’t see him.
“I know your there,” I whisper, ”I’ve seen you before and I wish to meet you. Please show yourself to me!” I wait for the creature to show itself to me but nothing happens.
I hear this little buzzing noise and then a voice says ever so silently, ”You’ve seen me? You’ve heard me talk before?”
“Yes… I actually wanted to thank you for protecting me all my life. I really enjoyed your company through though long nights when my father wasn’t there.”
“You knew I was there that long ago?”
“Yes. I’ve always known you were there but I thought if I talked out everyone would think I was a weirdo or something. Please show yourself to me!” I stare at the chair but instead and small light begins to glow at the bottom of my bed. I turn and stare at the light, which ends up being the pokémon I had seen all of those times. Instead this time I see a soft glow coming from the creature.
“You can see me now?”
“Yes and you’re so beautiful!”
“Thanks but if you can see me that means you can see…” the creature stops talking suddenly as if it lost its train of thought and then picks up right where it left off, “…all of us!”
“I guess I can but I never have before.”
“You’re the one that is meant to let us out in the open, to tell everyone that we exist and to show us to!”
“I can’t do it right now! You know what I’m trying to accomplish and I can’t just stop!”
“We need you! For centuries we have guarded people and they never knew we were here. We want them to know!”
“But what can I do?”
“Now that you’ve seen me you can see all of us. You’ve broken the spell of us and now you have to help us!”
“But how?!’
“You’ll have to find that out. Now get some sleep and think about it!”
“Okay,” I reply as I turn over in my bed. I start to sleep and a dream comes into my mind. A dream about me helping ‘the guarding pokémon’ out and them finally being free. The dream startled me though. The thought of never have something to guard people as it had before scared me but I stayed in the dream as if I was to show me was could happen. When I awoke I knew what I had to do.
