| Uechi Ryu History |
| Uechi-Ryu Karatedo is a very classical and traditional Okinawan martial arts system. Its roots being in a Chinese Temple fighting system called Pangai-noon, it more closely resembles a southern Chinese boxing system than a karate system. Uechi-Ryu uses circular and defensive blocks and relies on in-close fighting and economy of motion with open-hand strikes and low snapping kick work. Special characteristics to Uechi-Ryu are the use of "choken" or fore knuckle strike and the "toe kick": techniques found in only a few other systems. Built within the classical Okinawan system is a conditioning philosophy which dictates regular disciplines of physical training to toughen and protect the vulnerable but trainable areas of the body. This process of building a "natural armor" strengthens mental attitude and training spirit. Through the study of this classical system, the student of Uechi-Ryu Karate-Do will be able to defend himself with confidence and courage. |
