*Pepperland* issue #1 welcome!

Hey Bulldog! A quick note from the prez.
Hi everyone!!!! I’m so glad that you subscribed!! I’m REALLY sorry that it took so long to start up this letter. I’m really glad that it’s finally up and running (smoothly, I hope!). I’m Pickwick5, your prez. I’m new at this newsletter thing, although I’ve written for a few newsletters about the Beatles before, so please bear with me & my mistakes, I’m “getting better all the time!” Well, I really hope that you all enjoy this newsletter. I'd really like it if we could get more writers, so if you have anything you’d like to submit to go to the newsletter then just e-mail it to me. The same goes for questions/comments, so just send ‘em along to me. I usually check my mail pretty much “eight days a week” but if for some reason I don’t get to you right that second, have no fear! I’ll be there. Thanks again for joining (you did join didn’t you?). Best wishes, Pickwick5 :o)

Special Report:

Giving Bootlegging the "boot!"
By Pickwick5
Ever heard of bootlegging??? In case you haven’t, bootlegging is when bootleggers make illegal recordings (such as live ones) and make money off of selling them, which the actual artists get none of.
Just last year in 1997 around late March/early April after a year-long investigation, 13 major bootleg manufacturers and dealers were caught near Disney World in Orlando, Florida. With them were found about 800,000 by recording artists such as Tori Amos, Led Zeppelin, and the Beatles!!!! Six of them were arrested (five of which were foreign), two were’nt caught the first but time but were apprehended later, and warrants were issued for the arrest of the other five.
In response to these happenings, one collector is quoted saying, “Bootleg producers are not competing with the majority of the record companies’ products. If the recording industry wants a piece of that money, they could start releasing quality live recordings. When was the last time a record company released a complete live show, unedited, of any artist?”
(Information and quotes for this article are from "Booty Call" by Sorelle Saidman, found at Rolling Stone online (keyword Rolling Stone).

Please Mr.Postman
By Pickwick5

Recently, the postal service has run a whole lot of new ideas to use on some new postage stamps celebrating the 50s and 60s. Among the many winners for the 1960’s were the Beatles!!! Some other winners in that category were the peace sign, Man Walks on the Moon, and the Ford Mustang. Some 60s losers were golf on TV, and shopping malls developing. A few 50s winners: "I Love Lucy" and the "Cat in the Hat." Some of their losing 50s counterparts were hula-hoops and the Cold War. Keep and eye out for Beatle stamps at your local post office (I’m not sure whether they are collector ones or not).

Films by Linda
By Pickwick5

Coming up at the Edinburgh Film Festival, a short film by Linda McCartney, the recently deceased wife of Paul McCartney, will be premiered. The animated film, "Wild Prairie," was based on a song that she recorded and wrote. "It was so evocative. Beautiful images. She rode at night and felt the stars and the open sky were so close she was riding in the sky," says Oscar Grillo, director. Way to go, Linda!

Help! A movie review
By Veg987

Help! is a hilarious movie about a ring, Ringo Starr, and the rest of the Beatles. It starts out with this Middle Eastern religion. The leaders of the religion are about to sacrifice this young woman, (for all of you that do not know, the sacrifice in this religion means they kill a person and offer it to their god, Kyelee) when they notice she is not wearing the sacrificial ring (they cannot sacrifice her unless she is wearing the ring). Little do they know, this girl has sent the ring to Ringo. Later when these preists find out, they fly out to the Beatles. The inside of the Beatles house is awesome, they all have their weird "enviroments". John's is my favorite. From this moment on, just about all these religious leaders do is try to get the ring. Ringo wants it off too, except it is stuck on his finger! Hoping they can get it off, John, Paul, George, and Ringo head off to consult a pair of crazy scientists. The scientists want the ring as much as the priests do. The end is hilarious, and luckily Ringo does get the ring off. And you won't believe how. All throughout the movie there are a lot of scenes where a Beatles song is played. My favorite is the skiing part. I strongly recommend finding this video and watching it. Sometimes it is on TV. It is one of my favorite movies.

Song Lyrics
By Macca818

Getting Better
It's getting better all the time
I used to get mad at my school
The teachers who taught me weren't cool
Holding me down, turning me round
filling me up with your rules.
I've got to admit it's getting better
A little better all the time
I have to admit it's getting better
It's getting better since you've been mine
Me used to be an angry young man
Me hiding me head in the sand
You gave me the word
I finally heard
I'm doing the Best that I can.
I've got to admit it's getting better
I used to be cruel to my woman
I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved
Man I was mean but I'm changing my scene
And I'm doing the Best that I can
I admit it's getting better
A little better all the time
Yes I admit it's getting better
It's getting better since you've been mine.

Quotes of the Fab 4
By Macca818 and Pickwick5

The Beatles said lots of great things inside their music and outside of it.
Here’s just a few quotes from them.

"When I was 12, I used to think I must be a genius but nobody’s noticed." -John Lennon

"If you can play in a pub, you can play in a band." -Paul McCartney

"I'm nutty, I'm crazy, but boy, is my life outrageous!" -Paul McCartney

"I really thought that love could save us all." -John Lennon

"Life is like an Instrument........keep on playin." -Paul McCartney

(I also have a whole bunch of quotes/press questions.
The first two sets are concerning their famous hairstyle,
"Moptops." I’ll run some more next issue:)

Press: "Where did you get your hairstyle?"
Paul: "From Napoleon. And Julius Caesar too. We cut it anytime we feel like it."
Ringo: "We may do it now."

Press: “Where did you think up the hairdos?”
Paul: “We got them from a German photographer who wore his hair this way.”
George: “It was while we were in Germany. I went swimming and when I came out I didn’t have a comb, so my hair just dried. The others liked the way it looked, and there we were.”
John: “We’ve told so many lies about it we’ve forgotten.”

Press: “Which of you is really bald?”
George: “We’re all bald. I’m deaf and dumb.”

Press: “Who thought up the name the Beatles?”
Paul: “ I thought of it.”
Press: “Why?”
Paul: “Why not?”

Press: “Who in the world would the Beatles like to meet more than anyone else?”
Ringo: “The real Santa Claus.”
