Beatle-Wise
Info on the Beatle scene
By Pickwick5 (a really Beatle-crazy writer)
Four Lads From Liverpool
John Lennon didn’t start out as a musician. He was an artist. He was in this band that first started out as the Blackjacks, and then became the Quarry Men. Finally, after much hard work performing in local clubs and other places like that, they got their big break. They were given the opportunity to work playing in a night club in Hamburg, Germany. There was only one problem. They needed a 5 piece band, not a 4 piece like they had. Thanks to John, their problem was solved. As I mentioned before, John was an artist. He had had a roommate who was also an artist. His name was Stuart Sutcliffe. Around the time the band was offered the job in Hamburg, Stuart sold a painting of his for 65 pounds (That’s English money. I couldn’t find the symbol for it on my computer, so I just spelt it out.) which just so happened to be just enough money to buy a bass guitar, exactly what the band lacked. Finally, after much persuasion, John & Paul convinced Stuart to buy it with the money, even though he didn’t know how to play it. They taught him a little bit of it, but other than that he didn’t know what he was doing. They went off to Germany and played in night clubs there, known by the name of Long John & the Silver Beetles. Stuart continued to paint while they were there, and later fell in love with a German photographer, Astrid Kirchherr.

Ok, here’s some funny Beatle quotes that my Dad found on the Web this summer. I’m pretty sure some of them are in the movie, A Hard Day’s Night. These ones are concerning the Beatles’ trademark hairstyle in their early days: "moptops."

Press: Where did you get your hair style?
Paul: From Napoleon. And Julius Caesar too. We cut it any time we feel like it.
Ringo: We may do it now.

Press: Where did you think up the hairdos?
Paul: We got them from a German photographer who wore his hair this way.
George: It was while we were in Germany. I went swimming and when I came out I didn’t have a comb. So my hair just dried. The others liked the way it looked and there we were.
John: We’ve told so many lies about it we’ve forgotten.

Press: Which of you is really bald?
George: We’re all bald. I’m deaf and dumb.

I Need You
Written by George Harrison

You don’t realise* how much I need you,
Love you all the time and never leave you,
Please come on back to me, I’m lonely as can be, I need you.
Said you had a thing or two to tell me,
How was I to know it would upset me.
I didn’t realise as I looked in your eyes,
You told me, oh yes you told me
You didn’t want my lovin’ anymore.
That’s when it hurt me and feeling like this
I just can’t go on anymore, I need you.
Please remember how I feel about you,
I could never really live without you,
So, come on back and see
Just what you mean to me
I need you, I need you.

*This is the British spelling of the American spelling realize.

George wrote this song for Patti Boyd, who he was separated from during the filming of Help! In the Bahamas. It was included in the movie Help!

"I really thought that love could save us all." ~John Lennon
