On Sunday night a tragic accident took the life of Owen Hart. He was 34.

There are no words that can express the profound sorrow felt by so many of us who knew and loved this very special human being.

Fans throughout the world shared a small portion of Owen's life through his various ring personas. But to know Owen Hart the human being was pure joy. Owen loved this business and lived to entertain both in, and out of the ring. He was a consummate performer and a legendary prankster. In the extended family of professional wrestlers respect does not come easily and is not taken lightly. Owen Hart had that respect. He was more than just one of the boys...he was a friend and a brother to all. Our locker room and our lives will never be the same.
A loving son, brother, uncle, husband and father, Owen is survived by his wife Martha, his son Oje and his daughter Athena. Our prayers go out to them and the entire Hart family. With heavy hearts and the deepest of sympathies for his family we say good-bye. If the legacy of a man's life is measured by the lives he touched and how much he is loved ... then a big piece of Owen Hart will live on in all of us.

Owen of course comes from the legendary Hart
family out of Calgary, Alberta. Despite the spotlight that his older brother
Bret has received, Owen is unquestionably one of the best aerial and technical
wrestlers in the business today.

Owen wrestling debut came in May of 1986 in his
father's Calgary Stampede promotion, as he teamed with Ben Bassarab to defeat
Chic Scott and the Great Gama. Owen went on to win the British Lightheavyweight
title along with the British Commonwealth Title and Stampede North American
title.

In 1988, a new aerial specialist hit the WWF, by
the name of the Blue Blazer. This masked man was noneother than Owen Hart.
He displayed his incredible talents with every match, but was unable to
land a title, and more often than not was on the losing end of matches against
more accomplished heel opponents.

Owen left the Blazer behind in 1989 and appeared
briefly in WCW using his own name. That however didn't pan out, and Hart
longed to join his brother in the WWF. In the early 90s, Owen returned.
He teamed briefly with Jim Neidhart as "the New Foundation" as
well as with Koko B. Ware as "High Energy" before starting as
a singles wrestler. Again, Owen showed a lot of aerial skill, but didn't
have the killer instinct to win big matches. Things would change. In the
fall of 1993, Owen joined forces with brothers Bret, Keith and Bruce at
the Survivor Series against Shawn Michaels and three of his "knights".
During the match, Owen accidentally ran into Bret who was standing on the
ring apron. As the Hart brothers attended to the Hitman, Owen was rolled
up and pinned by Michaels. Owen blamed Bret for the loss, and promptly challenged
his former world champion brother to a match.

Bret and Owen managed to patch things up, as Bret
refused to face Owen. The two teamed up at the Royal Rumble of '94 in a
tag team title match against the Quebecers. Bret injured his knee in the
match and thus the match was ended. Owen was livid, and blamed Bret for
the loss, kicking his older brother's leg out from under him. Finally, Bret
agreed to the match, and at Wrestlemania 10 they fought, with Owen shocking
the world by pinning Bret cleanly.

Owen quickly became the top contender to the WWF
title, which incidentally Bret won later in the night at WM 10. He challenged
his brother on numerous occasions, but was unable to get a victory with
the title on the line. With every match however, Owen's attitude and mean
streak got stronger. He developed the will to win, and became a better wrestler
as a result. Hart won the King of the Ring tournament in 1994, as well as
the USWA title, as the USWA was affiliated with the WWF.

In the spring of 1995 at Wrestlemania 11, Hart
joined forces with a returning Yokozuna to capture the WWF tag team titles
from the Smokin' Gunns. The team would lose and regain the titles from the
Gunns before losing them again. Then, Owen found a new partner, his brother-in-law
Davey Boy Smith (the British Bulldog) and together the two beat the Gunns
for the gold, Owen's third reign. Hart also won two Slammy awards, one each
in 1996 and 1997, and he became known to carry the trophies with him to
the ring.

In the spring of 1997, the Hart Foundation was
reformed, comprised of Owen, Bret Hart, the Bulldog and Jim Neidhart. Then
in April of 1997, while still one-half of the tag champions, Owen defeated
Rocky Maivia on Raw to capture the Intercontinental title. He and the Bulldog
would lose the tag titles one month later to Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels,
but Owen would hold the IC title for four months before losing to Austin
at Summerslam '97. In that particular match, Hart severely injured Austin's
neck following a tombstone piledrvier. Austin was unable to move for a few
minutes following the piledriver, and suffered damage to his spine, but
he still managed to roll an unsuspecting Hart up for the pin. Owen won the
title back in October of '97 in a tournament final after Austin's forfeiture,
but one month later Austin defeated Hart at the Survivor Series.

Following the Series, and on the heels of the infamous
Bret Hart "double cross", Owen Hart left the WWF. He attempted
to get out of his WWF contract, but was unsuccessful. So in December of
1997, Hart returned to WWF action. In 1998, Hart engaged in a feud with
Hunter Hearst Helmsley that saw him capture the European title (from Goldust,
subbing for Helmsley). Triple H regained the title at Wrestlemania, and
with HHH's involvement with D-Generation X, Owen found himself short-handed.
He then acquired the help of The Nation and became a prominent member in
the group.

As the war between the two factions continued,
a young impersonator named Jason Sensation came onto the scene and embarassed
Owen with his fake rubber nose and impersonation of Owen. The impersonations
regularly enraged Hart, and on one occasion on Raw he attacked Jason and
put him in the sharpshooter.

Owen also began a feud with Ken Shamrock after
Hart turned on Ken during a tag match on Raw. The two competed across North
America in submission matches. They battled at IYH: Fully Loaded in July
of 1998 in the legendary Stu Hart Dungeon, a match Owen won. Next came Summerslam
'98 and a "Lion's Den Match" inside a UFC-style cage. Shamrock
came out victorious in this match. Because of his feud with Shamrock, Owen
developed a partnership with Dan Severn (a Shamrock foe) who ironically
injured Nation member D-Lo Brown.

As Owen became more involved with Severn in a feud
with Shamrock, he left the Nation, which eventually disbanded. Then during
a match on Raw that saw Owen wrestle Severn, Owen delivered a piledriver
that injured Severn, something reminiscent of Hart's match with Steve Austin
at Summerslam '97. Severn's friend Steve Blackman began a feud with Hart
as a result, and the two did battle at IYH: Rock Bottom in December of 1998
in a match that Blackman won by countout.

As the Blackman/Hart feud continued, an old WWF
figure from a decade ago returned, as the Blue Blazer (Owen Hart's former
personna) began appearing in the WWF, specifically to attack Blackman. Owen
insisted that he wasn't the Blazer, and on a few occasions Hart and the
Blazer appeared together to attack Blackman. Steve became enraged, and during
a match with the Blazer, he unmasked him to find Owen underneath. On another
occasion on Raw, Blackman teamed with Goldust against the Blazer and Hart,
and the Blazer on this occasion was unmasked with Jeff Jarrett the guy hiding
under it. Things became even more confusing on one occasion when a black
wrestler made an appearance as the Blazer.

Dan Severn returned during an Owen vs. Blackman
"Lion's Den Match" on Sunday Night Heat in late 1998 as guest
referee, and surprisingly attacked Blackman. This put an end to the Blackman/Owen
feud, and Hart then decided to turn his focus to the WWF tag division, with
Jeff Jarrett as his partner. The two went on a rampage in early 1999, defeating
several top teams including the New Age Outlaws and in a non-title match,
Ken Shamrock and the Big Bossman. Finally, Hart and Jarrett got a title
shot at the champs on Raw on January 25, 1999, and a nicely-timed chairshot
on Shamrock allowed the challengers to win the match, and the titles. They soon lost the title to X-Pac and Kane.
