Wrestling Terms


Angle: The current storyline a wrestler has.
Example: Stephanie McMahon is married to Triple H in an angle, they are not married in real life.

Babyface: A "Good Guy".
Example: Hulk Hogan was a huge babyface during his time in the WWF.

Blade: When a wrestler cuts himself open (usually on the forhead) after being hit with something to simulate that the object busted him open. It is usually done with a razor blade that is hidden in their wrist tape or boot.
Example: At Royal Rumble 2000 Triple H bladed after being hit with the barbwire.

Booker: Someone who sets up the matches or writes the storylines.
Example: Vince McMahon books most of what you see on TV in the WWF.

Booking Committee: A group of bookers that write TV as a unit.
Example: WCW has been known to use a booking committee.

Bump: When someone takes a hard fall or hit.
Example: Mick Foley is known for taking big bumps, he took many in the famous Hell in a Cell match.

Card: The matches to take place at a wrestling show.
Example: Steve Austin vs. The Rock was the main event on the card for Wrestlemania 15.

Dark Match: A match that takes place at the arena but is not shown on TV.
Example: Matches involving local wrestlers usually take place before Smackdown is taped.

Face: See Babyface

Feud: When wrestlers continually fight each other, usually leading to a PPV match.
Example: Steve Austin and Vince McMahon had a feud that lasted for a year.

Finisher: A wrestler's finishing move.
Example: Steve Austin's "Stunner", Mankind's "Mandible Claw", DDP's "Diamond Cutter".

Foreign Object: Am object that a wrestler uses as a weapon.
Example: A table, a steal chair or a baseball bat.

Gimmick: The character a wrestler plays. Also see Angle.
Example: Gangrel's gimmick is a vampire.

Gold: A title belt.
Example: WWF Heavyweight Title, WCW United States Champion, WWF Women's Title.

Heat: When a wrestler gets a reaction from the crowd.
Example: Triple H gets good heel heat when the crowd chants "Asshole".

Heel: A "Bad" guy or rulebreaker.
Example: Hulk Hogan is a heel when he plays his "Hollywood" character.

High Spot: When something high risk takes place during a match.
Example: Most of the matches that the Hardy Boyz are in are full of High Spots.

House Show: A wrestling show for a live audience only that doesn't air on TV.
Example: When the WWF tours, most shows are house shows.

Job: To lose a match to someone.
Example: The Rock jobbed to Steve Austin at Wrestlemania 15.

Jobber: Someone who constantly loses.
Example: Steve "The Brooklyn Brawler" Lombardi is the most well known jobber.

Juice: Another word for blood.
Example: Triple H juiced at the Royal Rumble 2000.

Juice Hardway: To bleed without blading.
Example: This happens in ECW when forks are used.

Kayfabe: To keep in character. Breaking Kayfabe is when a wrestler acts out of character, which is not a big deal now, but was during the early 90s and before.
Example: In the Rock's new book does not break Kayfabe but Mich Foley does in his own.

Mark: Someone who thinks things in wrestling are real.
Example: Somebody that thinks that Shawn Michaels is really the WWF Commisioner.

Mark Out: Even the biggest insider can mark out, it means to think something is really awesome and get excited about something that happens.
Example: A Mark Out moment would be when Mankind fell off of the the hell in the cell.

No-Show: When a wrestler does not show up for a scheduled appearance.
Example: Jeff Jarrett and Bret Hart no-showed Souled Out 2000 because they both had head injuries.

Over: To be popular among fans.
Example: The Rock is the most over wrestler in the business.

Pop: The reaction a wrestler gets when he/she does something.
Example: Too Cool and Rikishi get a good pop when they dance.

Shoot: When something real happens that was not supposed/scheduled to happen.
Example: HBK was shooting when he hinted that Bret Hart was having some "Sunny" days.

Spot: A cool moment in a match.
Example: When both Mankind and the Rock did the people's elbow it was a cool spot.

Strap: A championship belt.
Example: The WWF Heavyweight belt.

Turn: When a wrestler changes from a face to a heel or vice versa.
Example: The Big Show turned when he starting feuding with the Rock.

Work: When something is planned ahead of time.
Example: Steve Austin being hit by a car was a work to give him time off for surgery.
