Debuting in 1994 as one half of the Smoking Gunns with Bart Gunn, Billy Gunn's career took off when he joined forces with Road Dog Jesse James to form the New Age Outlaws. The duo became possibly the most successful tag team in WWF history, and the team that many consider the best ever. The Outlaws also boosted their popularity and charisma by joining DX. Many believed that Gunn could be better as a singles wrestler, and due to animosity between the Outlaws, Gunn went solo. He began to live up the high expectations he set when he nearly captured the Intercontinental Championship on multiple occasions, and then secured the Hardcore Title just before WrestleMania XV. However, when he failed to make it big as a main-event heel, Gunn reunited with Road Dogg to capture the tag titles for a fifth time on Smackdown, and the most succesful tag team in WWF history was once again reunited and in DX. In February 2000, he injured himself while executing the Fame-Ass-er to Buh Buh Ray Dudley on a table and missed some time to have surgery. This was played onscreen as a temporary feud between Billy Gunn and the rest of DX.
