SKAVEN MORDHEIM TACTICS by Annuriel

The Skaven warband is quite straight forward to use, as long as you know what you are trying to achieve. If you want to overwhelm the foe in a tidal wave of fur and claws, then don't bother getting warplock pistols for your all your heroes. If you want your warband to be a small, elite, fighting force, then forget about getting any giant rats. In this article I plan to give you a rough idea about how to use a Skaven warband effectively.

HEROES
As skaven are cheap, your allowed to get lots of heroes. Always try to get as many heroes as you can at the begining of the campaign. This will cut down on your warband size, which will meen you will lose your first few battles, but get no end of income and experience out of it. I will now give a run through of all the heros available to Skaven warbands.
I) Assassin Adept
This is the leader of your warband, and is a brilliant killer. He has access to strange and powerful equipment, is fast, strong, and skilled in what he is doing. What else could you ask for? The only disadvantage is his low LD of 7. With this in mind, try to get him the +1 LD advance sometime in the campaign. This is the only hero I give armour to at the start of the game, and I give him heavy armour and a helmet. This will protect him from harm and prevent him from being stunned. As for weapons, either get him fighting claws or weeping blades, the classic Skaven Assassin equipment.
II) Black Skaven
Always get at least one Black Skaven at the start of the campaign. Black Skaven are your classic champion heroes, and with Strength 4 they can always pack a punch. They also make excellent standard bearers if you decide to get your warband a standard. I always give them toughened leather, and a helmet if I can afford it. A flail or two swords seems to be the usual weapon choice for Black Skaven, and is usually the wisest.
III) Eshin Sorcerer
An Eshin Sorcerer is not essential for your starting warband, but is worth condsidering. If they don't start off with the "Eye of the Warp" spell at the begining of the campaign, always get them another spell if they get the skill upgrade, as this spell is lethal, especially against low LD enemies such as other skaven. However, they need to get into combat to use this spell, so try to get them an extra toughness or the Warrior Wizard spell if you can.
IV) Night Runners
These are simply verminkin with a lower LD who count as heroes, so I always try to get the maximum number (2) of Night Runners with my starting warband. Throwing Stars are ideal equipment for them, especially if you give them the Knife Fighter skill. Another way to use them is as bait. I have a Night Runner which I use as bait in my warband, and he is equipped with a sword and shield. And you never know, the bait might actually kill something...

HENCHMEN
Henchmen are the backbone of your army, so dont underestimate them. Once you've got all the heroes you can then just get lots and lots of henchmen. And some more. And then throw in some henchmen for good luck. And don't forget.....OK, i'll stop now.
I) Verminkin
Once you've got all the heroes you can in your starting warband, spend the rest of your points on Verminkin. Don't bother with armour, get a group of five with swords and daggers and a group of three with slings. Move them forward in a solid mass, maybe led by a black skaven or something. When they close with the enemy, charge. The slingers stay back and put stones between the eyes of any scum trying to escpae your tidal wave of rats. Get the maximum number of warriors you can in your warband (20), and then get...
II) Giant Rats
Once you've got your maximum number of 20 warriors, just get loads and loads of rats. Their cheap, so you can get as many as you like once the warband get wrealthy. Most people get as many skaven as they can, then just get good equipment, but not me. I get my maximum, then everytime income comes through I get another group of rats. And if you have rats they can replace the Night Runners as being bait, as you only want to kill off your Night Runners if you have to.
III) Rat Ogres
To get something like this when your warband starts out would be disaster. However, when you've got bored of rats, crossbreed one with an ogre. Normal Ogres are dim and slow, but have the raw strength to bring down a daemon. Rat Ogres combine the best things from Skaven and Ogres. The result, their strong, tough, fast, and cunning. What more could you ask for? Well, a higher LD maybe...
