WHAT IS APPLIED LINGUISTICS INDEX?

ALI is an index designed with the general aim of contributing to the spread of scientific knowledge. More specifically, it is designed for easing the time-consuming task of literature review for the researchers in the field of applied linguistics.

ALI contains an alphabetically-listed set of key words and expressions, each of which is followed by a number of statements extracted from articles and books in our field. Reading of these statements will facilitate a researcher's review of literature as they represent multiple-perspectives about major topics as diverse as error correction, universal grammar, critical period, Broca's aphasia, processing instruction, qualitative research, creolization, modularity, communicative competence, Natural Approach, social constructivism, sign language, etc. It also contains minor topics such as structure dependency, William's syndrome, wug test, which are represented with a few statements.

Unlike other search devices (CD ROM or internet search engines), ALI does not only lead the researchers to relevant references or but also provide detailed information about a key topic. Statements in ALI represent the gist of important portions of an article or a book. In that sense the development of ALI is necessarily a thought-demanding task that cannot be accomplished by artificially intelligent devices, no matter how sophisticated they are.

ALI will never be complete; it will always be behind the speed of advances in our field. But with your cooperation we can increase our speed and keep abreast with the developments in applied linguistics. If you have read any article or book with telegraphic notes on the margins, please do not hesitate to contact us.
